Knicks · Shumpert should start the next game (page 1)

ChuckBuck @ 1/4/2012 10:08 PM
Wow, where do we start? Ugly ball, no defense, no energy until Iman Shumpert entered the game. If his injury isn't serious for the next game (Cramps?), then he should definitely be in the starting lineup. Once we fall behind, it seems they lose confidence and energy. Bad team effort by everyone, but very encouraging performance by Shumps diving for loose balls, getting on the break, hitting open shots etc. Great to hear the crowd chant "WE WANT SHUMP-ERT!!!" once D'Antonti pulled Shumps for Douglas. At least Coach knows where the fans stand, and if he doesn't make Shumpert a starter soon, could very well signal the end.
gunsnewing @ 1/4/2012 10:18 PM
hopefully the cramping of the left leg had nothing to do with compensating for the pain in the right knee. I agree very encouraging but all for naught if we don't play defense and coach it EFFECTIVELY
MSG3 @ 1/4/2012 10:25 PM
Anybody but Fields. I like the kid but he's completely lost. No confidence whatsoever. Shump was unreal tonight. But so was Jorts in Sacramento. Let's see him put. Few good ones together.

Bu based on what fields is doing I agree Shump should start.

It doesn't matter who starts....Shump will get more playing time than Fields. Douglas and Fields will start until Baron Davis is on board. Once he comes into the starting lineup, then will start Shump.

He doesn't like to hurt players confidense, especially weak minded players like Fields and Douglas. But when BD is in the lineup, he will make the excuse that Shump and BD play better together, and force TD and Fields to lead the bench.

I know how thinks....Thats why they call him a players coach. We need to stop picking up these 1 trick ponies like Novak, and grab some multi positional athletes, that can guard more than 1 position.

He should start on his defense alone..forget his offense. The upgrade on defense from Fields to Shump is incredible. You can tell opposing players fear his defense too cause they pass it up quicker or stop their dribble quicker. They see Fields and their like "Food"..time to pad my stats.

It does matter who starts cause it sets a tone. If anyone has play'd ball on any level they know the beginning of the game is very important and can set a tone for the whole game. Knicks start off good today, Bobcats lose confidence and I bet u miss most of those shots they were taking.

crzymdups @ 1/4/2012 11:25 PM
people used to say the same thing about nate. hope that isn't all this is. we need shumpert to be good at this point.

I for one don't really care if he is lost forever. Improvement doesn't seem like it's coming. Is he all of a sudden gonna start hitting open shots? Or gain a better handle? Or gain some play making abilities? It's way too much coddling of Fields and TD. Sometimes u need to be insulted or benched. It's called accountability. That's why they chuck up so many bad shots cause they have no fear of consequences.

NYKBocker @ 1/4/2012 11:55 PM
Start Shumpert and bench TD. TD is horrible. He has to take a lion's share of the blame for the losses.
BigSm00th @ 1/5/2012 12:02 AM
after 52 combined minutes in the NBA, it is blatantly obvious that douglas is better than both fields and douglas. either at the point (over toney) or at the 2 (over landry), shumpert brings better D, more confident offense, and a discernible swagger. toney plays nervous, and landry looks like he's about to shit his pants for some reason.

toney and landry are 2nd unit guys masquerading as starters. shumpert should start the next game (over landry), and once baron gets back, he and iman should be the starting backcourt.

already we need changes.

technomaster @ 1/5/2012 12:08 AM
Fields generally plays his best (offense) when Carmelo isn't on the floor with him. Makes sense if they have as little overlap as possible.

I have a hard time judging Landry's defense - I agree that he doesn't seem to make other teams twitchy when he's nearby. He's more of a team defender who sticks his hands in when appropriate - not one that will hawk you when dribbling or take chances on the passing lanes.

It does seem pretty clear that the Knicks offense is very stagnant and jerky (hard saying that when you score 110+). The D is clearly extremely problematic. The Knicks can't seem to stop anyone regardless of position.

Seems as if there's a lot of thinking going on. Chandler constantly barking probably bugs his teammates.

I'm not big on starting rookies out of the gate because it leads to problems later. Fields being a good example

+1

I'm sure all Knicks fans are sick of playing from behind. Set the tone early, play with energy from the get go, and hopefully play with a lead for once instead of always making a run when it's too late.

His offense to me is bad whether Melo is on the court or not. A shooting guard who can't create a shot for himself is useless. Also his jumper is not a true jumper..it's a set shot which needs lots of space and time to get off. Shump is more successful because he has a true jumper. He has no go to moves, Misses easy layups and less than 10 ft jumpers routinely, forces when he doesn't need to.

His man to man defense is pretty bad. He can't seem to stay in front of any two guard or get around picks quick enough to disrupt the great shooters off picks.

I do think he can be a useful part of a second unit.

Also he's forgotten about the little things in the game that made him somewhat successful last year like rebounding, hustle and diving at rim for easy put backs and layups. Dantoni has him camped at 3 point line the whole game which is not his strength.

Every Player is different. Shump will never have a confidence issue which is the major factor to the so called "Rookie Wall".

ChuckBuck @ 1/5/2012 12:19 AM
Fields game is tailor made for the 2nd unit. Put him in with Jorts, Balkman, and Walker and watch him do his thing (Like garbage time in Sacramento).

Exactly I Fields is not a 2 guard he needs to come off the bench and back up Melo , I want to see Shump starting at 2 guard and when Baron Gets here he will start at the point along side him

I know the Knicks have immediate considerations to address. But you try to put young professionals in a situation to succeed consistently.

If Shumpert is getting 30 minutes anyway, I say let him beat up on the opponent's second team. The Knicks need someone for that role anyway

gunsnewing @ 1/5/2012 12:40 AM
the problem is we are wasting the talents of our starting frontcourt starting a terrible backcourt that doesn't create easy shots. Everything is hectic on offense and defense to start games because a lot of 1 on 1 black hole play and chucking. Which leads to bad transition D and defensive rebounding. Shumpert needs to start immediately or his offense will be useless off the bench as it was was today when you are getting blown out by horrific teams every game right off bat. We need better starts then having a guy like TD providing offense off the bench against other teams second units will be effective in sustaining leads
