Bretos apologized. His own wife is asian. The guy didnt mean it as a slur. It still shouldnt have been said. Espn has to be more careful about saying this like this. They took immediate action.

Maybe it's sad that everything has to be looked at with some kind of bias or ism these days.

It is not bias to call an idiot on using offensive words.

One more thing, as a Knicks fan I especially resent ANY disparaging remark about Jeremy Lin

Yeah it isn't bias, your using the later Racism.

It's not like the colloquialism, "a chink in the armor" hasn't been around for hundreds of years..........

Anji - you have NEVER have seen me use the word racism in any post about this.

Please point it out, or correct yourself.

Anji @ 2/19/2012 6:03 PM
In reference to my post, I'm saying that you are viewing the word in a racist tone earl.

It's an accepted analogy that is used often, if it is offensive then you should never say that about anything ever. I don't know, I feel bad for the guy that this were things are, because he didn't do anything wrong.

Anji - there is no such thing as a "racist tone" unless you insist on putting your definition on someone else's words.

It was YOU who injected the word racism, not me. Speak for yourself and please speak clearly.

Anji - If you feel, "Chink In the armor" is " an acceptable analogy ("that is used often") for Jeremy Lin, then you need to join the dude at ESPN who was fired.

You are entitled to yur opinion but that's just messed up.

My eyes lit up when I saw the title of this thread.

I love people who are offended by other people being offended. Thats hilarious.

That byline has pass by a lot of eyes before it ends up on the website. Its inexcusable.

Like Lombardi said, "between two choices, stupid and malicious, it is the stupid explanation".

The fact that ESPN, chose to use it in regards to Jeremy Lin, shows me that they were trying to be clever in going for the double entendre. Instead they come off looking like the fools we all know they are, for their lack of sensitivity or outright ignorance when it comes to the word chink, as it pertains to the Asian community.

Adversely, another definition of the word chink, is to fill narrow openings in, which I must say Jeremy Lin has shown to do well when driving the lane. Go figure!

Dunno about that! being an actual phrase I've/we never heard of it

There is 'Kink in the armor'
that's a close as it comes hombre

I don't understand what you are trying to avoid, because if this isn't about Jermey Lins ethnicity then you need to explain to me what about phrase offends you.

And it's just ass backwards to say this widely accepted analogy is wrong because circumstance. It's either wrong or it isn't.

It's racist to say is there a chink in the Patorits Offense or it isn't
It's racist to say there is a chink in the Texas Rangers Offense or it isn't

Don't be a lemming and tell now because Lin is on the knicks that the phrase unacceptable. That is bullshit.... unless your a cow, because I wouldn't want to get ban for slurring you.

Anji, I think in this particular case there is circumstance which defines the bigger picture here. You may disagree, but 1 guy just got fired and another suspended from his job because of a LOT of public backlash, so I think you are in the minority here.

Life has many grey areas, and I think your example shies away or denies what is going on. No one is denying the the phrase has also been used to suggest a weak point, but that's where a double meaning does come into play and you can't deny that the word Chink also has a derogatory meaning.

Anji @ 2/19/2012 7:15 PM
I think it's wrong that the guy was fired.

If he was suspended it would be fine, because of the forum and the fact that people could take it the wrong way. But to totally cave like that because circumstance and uproot a mans life, to me is way more wrong than any perceived damage that phrase caused.

It's sad IMO.

Being fired is not fun. Neither is invoking racial stereotypes without provocation on a website for consumption by millions across the world. At some point people need to be held accountable for their actions. As many have posted here anyone can see at first glance that the headline can be offensive. Yet the guts being paid good money to uphold journalistic integrity in their published content let this go through. There is no defense for this behavior.

ESPN is using Lin to boost their profits and the first time he has a setback this happens. Build them up, tear them down, rinse and repeat.

I never knew this was possible. Seriously. Heh heh heh heh

I bet Lin could care less. Probably prayed for the moron and sent him some money after the idiot got fired.

I've always liked Bill Russell's response to ESPN stupidity, when they said one of Russell's championship teams was led by Cousy (Cousy had been retired for years by then): "They go on TV, they should know better."

Typical ESPN NY hate. They can't ignore the Knicks, they can't enjoy a deranged IT/Marbles back page, so they revert to something stupid like this.

Oh well, at least we're all talking about it.

Nalod @ 2/20/2012 9:17 AM
Society is all messed up on this.

In the same day we got the announcer who is married to an Asian women asking Clyde about if Lin's game has "a chink in the armor" and it sounds innocent. I wonder if the guy has any kids. As a father I recall years ago a guy made a dumb crack about my wife's ancestry and it was just a stupid line but it was heard by my kids, who were very young and would not have any idea why or what the guy said but in the face of my kids, it really pissed me off.

The other Guy got fired after the headline stood for only 35 minutes. I would be curious what the guys track record is and if he is very good at what he does. If its his first instance that should considered. Someone needed a pound of flesh.

This in a society where we still permit the Washington "Redskins" to exist.

Its offensive but at least it honors them as warriors of sort.

What we do know is that society moves further along when a guy like Jeremy Lin breaks stereotypes and these issues are made relevant for all to discuss and learn from.

I feel morally erect after writing this post!

So, someone should be suspended for being intentionally racist or for being utterly stupid.
