Knicks · Forget Everything You Read About Carmelo (page 1)

Today's NYPost Headline: "Knicks' Melo welcomes criticism"

Of course Carmelo welcomes critique. He desperately needs it.

There have been occasions when the Knicks (were) watching film and Mike Woodson will essentially shred Carmelo Anthony non-stop — a relentless critique...

Exactly what any person needs. Honesty.

“When I’m messing up, he tells me. Even when he got the job, I told him, ‘Just hold me accountable,’ Anthony said. “If I’m doing something that he doesn’t like, just tell me.

One does not survive West Baltimore with thin skin. Maturity

“Regardless, I don’t have a problem with criticism. If I can do something to help better this team, let me know. And he’s been doing that.”

Mike Woodson is old enough to be Carmelo Anthony's father.

Anthony said he not only has zero issues with being criticized, but he encourages the interim head coach to dish it out. Is this just public lip service, and the private reality is that Anthony gets unhappy with the disparagement? Could be. But he insists he told Woodson he can handle it.

Sometimes, a young man, who lost his Dad to cancer at age 4, simply needs a strong male role model.

Just win baby.

Gtfo here earl.

Empty platitudes, heard 'ems all before.

Go win a series, Mature Melo.

MarburyAnd1Crossover - Perhaps, if you were not stuck on one rigid line of thought, Knicks basketball would be more enjoyable.

Or does the mere mention of Carmelo sound like a dog whistle to your tin ear?

Think about it... how different is, "Go win a series" from "Just Win Baby"?

The difference between "Just Win Baby" (which is very general) and "Go Win A Series" (specific) is actually pretty big. Most people see themselves as winners (no doubt Melo) even though they may not win anything specific. In fact, we could finish below .500, possibly be out of the playoffs or losing badly in the 1st round, and if someone were to ask Melo "Are you a winner?" -- no doubt he'll say yes.

So MarburyCross is asking for something specific. Even if Melo plays well, and they lose the 1st series, Mature Melo would have reverted to the same ineffective Melo as he always has been in the NBA.

I thought Melo handled the intense media scrutiny about as well as any rational person could expect, which a tangent to the quoted

Who died and made you the mouthpiece for MarburyAnd1? "Most people see themselves as winners"? WhachootalkinboutWillis?

The amount of inference over what Carmelo would say after losing a playoff series is staggering.

In other words, if the Knicks lose, it will all due to Carmelo.

I get it.

The Nuggs reached the WCF and lost to the Lakers. The other first round exits he suffered, his teams were 7 or 8 seeds (despite his teams winning more than 47 games) and lost to much better teams, including the Spurs and Lakers.

If you watched an interview he had during the allstar game, Melo admitted that he cant be considered amongst the elite until he advances and wins a chanmpionship.

MSG3 @ 3/20/2012 9:15 AM
I'm not naive enough to think everything was all rosey with Melo and MDA. But before last season with the trade hanging over Denvers head, how many times was Melo perceived as a bad locker room guy or a coach killer?

I genuinely believe that Melo really wanted a strong head figure and MDA wasn't providing that stregth. Think of the guys he's played for. Boeheim, Karl, Coach K in the olympics. I think Melo's problem was that nothing was clicking for the team and he was getting frustrated because the coach wasn't fixing it. Maybe vociing displeasure or showing that frustration was the most leadership any one had given in the last month.

It's only been 3 games and this is all moot if these guys revert back to the way they were playing before. But what's done is done. I'm of the opinion that Melo desperately wants to win. He just has to have that burning desire within him for the rest of his career. That passion to win and do whatever it takes so far is what's seperated him from guys like Kobe, LeBron, Wade, Dirk, etc....

well I think that's it... Melo strikes me as an intense personality and Pringles a happy-go-lucky type. I'd probably rather have beers with Pringles and would bet Melo would say the same. But this is about a player/coach relationship and Melo/Woody seem like more of personality fit

Moonangie @ 3/20/2012 10:05 AM
I agree: MDA was too mild-mannered and midwestern in style to make a solid connection with Melo. I am not so sure Woody is the right fit, either. But I think Melo needs a stern, guiding hand to be most effective. He has demonstrated a level of intelligence and maturity in his interviews that clearly shows he's not a Marbury-esque prima dona. But is he a winner?

Time will tell. Go win a series and help this team advance. Then we can talk.

I was against the trade and I always thought Melo was a BIG stat whore.
However, this year, I saw stints in which he said and actually looked to pass lead the team by passing.
These past games at Indiana, its no surprise that he wanted the ball in his hands, and Lin didn't look to give it to him while he was open.
Lin also doesn't like to pass it to Fields for the Wide open 3point shot most of the time, because Fields is not a good shooter.
When Melo had the ball, he just swung it back out for an assist, or to the open man.
He has been feeding TC for those nice alley hoops and even moving it to Fields.
With the only bad shot, being the first shot of the game for the first 3 pointer in which he made.

Listen, I know its only been a couple games, but so far, he has been doing what he Woodson and he should have been doing the whole time Dantoni wanted him to do.
Melo lost faith in his team, and wanted to try something else, when he felt Dantoni system wasn't working and we didn't have shooters to spread the floor.
But Woodson seems to finally get it right, PLAY DEFENSE, REBOUND, BOX OUT, and move the ball to the open man for the shot.
I don't mind Melo or anyone hoisting what they feel is their best look when there is not much time in the shot clock.
I think the team needed a new voice, some tweaks, some adjustments (which Dantoni has done a horrible job at), and running some more set plays.

Dantoni's system of calling out rare plays doesn't work well with players that don't move well off the ball, cutters, and players without high IQ.
He has never used Amare, TC, and even Melo *after the Linsanity streak* for post position.
I know Amare and TC are not good post players and doesn't have any post moves, but they still need to utilize that post presence regardless.
Dantoni also has a horrible job of rotating players, while Woodson is willing to sit anyone down early, to utilize our bench.
This helps with fatigue and lowers chances of injury while Dantoni over plays his players and gasses them out/increasing chances of injury.

Lets see what happens during these last 21 games...

fishmike @ 3/20/2012 10:18 AM
Melo is a pain this way, because I agree... he needs a strong personality to really push him. However that pushing must remain within the comfort zone of his game. He will rebound, he will defend and he will score. Just make sure you only ask him to do those things the way he's comfortable doing them. I guess when your that talented you get to be high maintenance. So long as he does those things and its in the team concept then great. All that matters is winning.

RonRon - the trade was dictated by Dolan as much as Carmelo.

What is a stat whore?

It means that you are willing to give up your stats (shots, rebound) to other teammates for sexual favors or money or dem drugs.

nehemiah @ 3/20/2012 10:30 AM
Thanks guys -- I got it now. I feel much better since SC above did the personality profiles and analyzed who Melo would rather have a beer with. Love the objectivity and research that was called for as well.
Nalod @ 3/20/2012 10:32 AM
Why is he a Captain?

Needs a "strong personality" but is thought of as a team leader.

MSG just fabricated some propaganda to humanize him a bit.

LIke I have said for years, they just gonna tell fans what they want to hear.

What is interesting is in the three games he is shooting less, passing more and playing defense.

I still don't get what is going on with the team other than reducing Lin's touchs a bit.

Is this all about "personality" and a grown man having to hold a guy making 5-10-15-20 million dollars "accountable" like an AAU team?

This reminds me of when Melo said after a game that he would talk to Amare about 'how to get him more involved.' Couldn't help but wonder why Melo would take that responsiblity onto himself and where MDA was in all of this.
