Knicks · What the heck is wrong with Melo? (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 3/22/2012 11:04 AM
Does he even look anything like he did with us last year--or his previous years in the league? He missed a lay up by a mile last night. Where is the guy who can score 40 points any given night?

He's probably still dealing with some injury problems, especially his wrist that he hurt a couple weeks ago.

mrKnickShot @ 3/22/2012 11:08 AM
He has got to be hurt. He has never looked like this in his career.

But, while he can't shoot, if he can pass, rebound and defend like he has been, we will be fine. Hopefully, his shot will be back around playoff time.

MarburyAnd1Crossover @ 3/22/2012 11:15 AM
It will take some time to get into game shape, it's only the 3/4 of the season.

LOL Briggs, what do you expect?? For them to start the season in shape or something?? You poor bastard.

crzymdups @ 3/22/2012 11:25 AM
I've been assuming it's the wrist. I'm a little worried it's more serious than he is letting on.

Didn't he also get surgery on it last summer?

MarburyAnd1Crossover @ 3/22/2012 11:27 AM
I'm not worrying about his wrist. It's like our friend here pointed out, the guy starts off with a head of vapor in the first than fizzles as the game progresses. He's not in the best shape and that's a problem.
Bonn1997 @ 3/22/2012 11:27 AM
He seems like a guy who is relying on genetics and doesn't take good care of his body. He's paying the price for it now. I hope he spends this off-season doing exactly what Lin did last year.

Exactly.

As he nears 30, putting in the work to stay in top shape will become more important. His longevity is on the line.

Guy like Lebron, tip top every year. He can play 10 games in a row! Yea, Lebron has the genes too but he puts the work in.

Melo doesn't look or play like a guy that puts the work in.

SupremeCommander @ 3/22/2012 11:53 AM
there's a list of stuff that Melo hopefully will incorporate into his routine. He's been hurt though and, as others have pointed out, he's influencning the game in other ways besides his shot. He has been influencing games in other capacities. His passing has been incredible, he's defending, and he chips in with rebounding. That's enough for me, but not enough for the people that had hissy fits when he wasn't doing it prior
RonRon @ 3/22/2012 12:03 PM
his scoring is down, maybe playing with injuries.
Entering the league, he was VERY skinny, but I question his effort during the off season for training, developing his game, and staying in NBA caliber shape.
Endurance and not being in NBA shape, is limiting his legs, and while giving much effort on defense/rebounding, he just has a problem playing in both ends.
I like his effort on the defensive end and also Amare has also been much improved since Woodson took over.

Like Woodson has said, lets concentrate on DEFENSE and REBOUNDING, and worry about offense by playing defense and looking for the open man.
Melo's effort on defense and passing, willingness to pass/share the basket ball/ looking for the open man has been there.
Playing Point/Forward in the beginning of the season really opened up his passing ability, and he has been great at finding TC for the alley hoops and cuts.

Overall, the team has been playing with OPTIONS and counters, something Dantoni never did well.
The team has been using the post option with Amare and TC, a lot more than Dantoni's era.
Even though they might not be good players or have any post moves, they are utilizing the post game much more to attack the basket, spread the floor, and to initiate the offense.
Over all, TC has been getting so many alley oops for easy baskets that gain momentum, and Melo has been one of the ones utilizing Chandler as that weapon.
Outside of TC and JJ, no one else sets GOOD screens, which is very important in breaking down our opponents defense, and making easy shots.
I think our guards/forwards, should also be setting much more screens, which would help free up other players for the team.

Woodson's approach and ability to get the team to be on the same page, deserves much credit, holding his players/team accountable.
Prioritizing what he expects out of his players, effort, and intensity, gave us an identity for each player and as a team.

1) Defense
2) Rebounding
3) SHARE the basketball, look for the open man
4) utilizing the post option and feeding the cutters

Sharing the basketball and getting EVERYONE in sync on the defensive end deserves makes the game unselfish to watch and brings a playoff atmosphere at the right time.
All players are touching the ball and it is just natural to play better on both ends when each players feel like they are contributing.
Stats are very over rated in the game and can be very misleading, especially versus the importance of team chemistry...

With JJ, TC, and Iman injured, they are very crucial anchors, as our defensive leaders.
JJ is injured again and TC has been playing hurt, I think we could use another good body to secure us.
Hickson or Turiaf would have been nice additions, while Jordan and Jorts just are still learning on as rookies.
They can play 2nd/3rd unit roles, but they are not good enough defensively to contribute as a starter or even a consistent 2nd unit.

JamesLin @ 3/22/2012 12:05 PM
Not gonna lie. Melo's stats does bother me, but hell, he passes like a genius. Maybe all of you are right on his injury and his age. But I think it is also that he's learning the new system while just got out of injury list. Amar'e is picking it up faster, and I assume Melo will as well once they all get in the groove into the playoffs. Hell, we're winning, and until Melo's stats are costing the game, I'm not complaining.

This would aptly describe Jared Jeffries. I think Melo makes more than 10 times the salary of Jared and Jeremy combined. Glad you're so easy to please.

earthmansurfer @ 3/22/2012 12:09 PM
He sure is not shooting like in the past. Being in shape might be a part of it but I really doubt that is the reason. I tend to agree with those that said it is injury related. He may not be hurting now but it takes time to come back from an injury AND being a bit out of shape. Not that it is the same, but Stat JUST started to come on recently. I think, rather I HOPE, that Melo will be back for the playoffs.

In a way, it's a hidden blessing as he is fitting more in with the team concept. If and when we need him in the playoffs, hopefully he is back on. And seriously, I can't see a team stopping both Melo, Stat and crew, not to mention Chandler in the middle. We will be vicious.

He had elbow surgery last year. He also hurt his wrist which take a long time to heal. He is also out of shape.

right.. he's got to improve in certain areas but all things considered he's been chipping in across the board.

I would think once some of those things get sorted out, his shooting numbers will trend towards his career averages much like A'mare is currently trending. Now those "WTF is up with Amar'e" posts seem a little ridiculous

What the heck is wrong with Melo?
he got traded to the Knicks. Duh
EnySpree @ 3/22/2012 12:34 PM
He's playing defense now and is not in condition to bring it on both ends....some sad shit

no its great. I said if MDA gets canned I hoped and pray these slacker players get a guy who gets in their faces. MDA was the soft players coach and expected them to police themselves. It didnt happen. Now you get the task master who yells and runs long practices. GOOD. Sorry our star player isnt in shape enough to play both ends. Luckily we dont need him to win

Amare is once again showing his leadership and ability to put together big 2nd halfs. Man he looks good. Lets see Melo follow suit

newyorknewyork @ 3/22/2012 12:38 PM
If he is hurt and out of shape then how is he able to play quality defense? Maybe its not physical but mental?

We've blown teams out and I don't even know if he is averaging up to 30mins a game over the last 5 games. If that's the case then thats horrible.
