Knicks · Lin's agent: Don't assume he'll return... (page 1)

Lin's contract stuff, fairly obvious but here it is...

Jeremy Lin will be a restricted free agent this summer, and many see it as a foregone conclusion that the point guard will return to the New York Knicks, but not everyone feels so strongly.

"I don't expect that. We're not anticipating that's going to happen. We don't have assurances of anything," Lin's agent, Roger Montgomery, said in an interview with the New York Post. "I know history shows most restricted free agents go back to their team, but I'm not going to assume anything. We're waiting to see what happens."

Knicks coach Mike Woodson said earlier this month that Lin will "absolutely" be back with the Knicks next season. But Lin, speaking the day after the Knicks' season-ending loss to Miami in the playoffs, said "nothing is set in stone" regarding his free agency.

"There's always going to be uncertainty until the final contract is signed, so definitely nothing is set in stone," Lin said. "Nothing's set in stone until it's really written."

Thanks to a clause in the CBA -- named after Gilbert Arenas -- the Knicks can match any offer made to Lin this summer.

Another factor in Lin's free agency is the expected arbitration hearing over the Bird and Early Bird exceptions to the salary cap for waived players.

The union and league are at odds over whether the Bird rights for waived players should be transferred to their new teams. The union says the rights, which allow teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign players, should transfer for players who are waived. The league argues that the Bird rights should not transfer.

This is significant for Lin because he was picked up off of waivers by the Knicks. If the arbitrator rules in favor of the union, then the Knicks would be allowed to exceed the cap to sign both Lin and forward Steve Novak, who also was acquired off of waivers.

This would also allow the Knicks to use their $5 million mid-level exception on another player. If the arbitrator rules in favor of the league, the Knicks will likely have to use their mid-level exception to re-sign Lin and would be limited in their pursuit of other free agents.

Lin emerged from the end of the Knicks' bench in early February to lead the team to seven straight wins, essentially saving New York's season. In addition, he provided a significant financial boon for the Knicks in merchandising sales and marketing opportunities. These intangibles are why many believe Lin is a lock to re-sign.

But there is yet another wrinkle to consider: Teams under the salary cap can offer Lin more than $5 million per season in the third and fourth years of a contract offer, as long as the average annual value of the deal does not exceed the salary cap.

If the Knicks were to match such a back-loaded offer, it may put them above the luxury tax in the third and fourth years of Lin's contract and prohibit them from using their mid-level exception.

Lin underwent surgery April 2 to repair a small tear in the meniscus of his left knee. He tried to return during the first round of the Knicks' playoff series against the Heat but was unable to do so.

Montgomery told the New York Post that Lin is "doing well" but is not 100 percent healthy.

LIn and his agent have to create a market to get his price at. Its good business.

Lin has leverage beyond his on court performance few players in history can have.

How far another team will go is another story.

Good for him!

I agree.

Agent says "Lots of teams are in the market for an overhyped turnover machine."

Anyone know what his turnovers were during the MDA "Linsanity" and then under woodson?

Does anyone know what Woodsons planned offense is for next season?

Is Woodson really the coach?

Didn't think so.

Lin is coming back next year. Knicks are going to match any deal he gets.

At worse we get an quality backup PG.

If lin goes anywhere but NY, it'd be really F'd up. NY put him on the map, linsanity wouldnt of been linsanity if it didnt happen in NY.

I know the salary thing has been discussed to death somewhere here. But can't we offer Lin something like 3M, 3M, 5M, then a 12M (or some other monstrous value) player option on fourth year. That way, if he's a flop, then he still gets the payday that he deserves today (because he's worth 5M right now just on marketing value) but gets the cash in the fourth year--no more Amare contract by then. If he's Steve Nash by then, he can just opt out and renegotiate. But at 3M we can get Novak and MAYBE Fields back. (Can't we make Fields' salary contingent on shooting drills or something)

I don't care much about JR; just find an athletic 6'6" like Ariza, there must be a few around.

True, but we all know it don't work that way. All things being the same he will pick NY in my opionion but he could blow out his knee and the endorsements are done over nite.

Its just business.

I want JR back, but if he doesnt come back its not the end of the world. Ariza, bellineli, delonte west. Theres a ton of guys out there that can score

It's all posturing, nothing to see here. Knicks can match any offer.

There's at least ten teams I'd rather play for if I were Lin. That said, I'm sure the Knicks match any offer he gets.

Gravy Train?

If he stays decent yes. If he regress to his Golden State days then he will be Yi Jianlian status.

The point is to get the highest amount for the knicks to match.

Get it, "create a market". When you do this you actually raise the price.

Denver did this with Melo. Create a market and bid it up. KNicks had to trump nets offer.

Just business.

Gravy Train?

Gravy train. That trail of money that comes from selling Chinese language adds on your court. Like the right field in the Hideki Matsui era with the yankees. LIke if the knicks can sell the broadcast to China and Taiwan.

That gravy train.

its not about basketball is it?

Lin if he does not pan out will have still returned a nice profit off his contract.

If he does not pan out on the court then we'll just suck and use it as a reason Melo was not able to win here.

Nets could just make a nice offer to force the knicks into a back ended contract. Imagine having to pay 12 mil to him in year 5?

The Russian can laugh as he did making dolan over pay for melo.

Don't get me wrong, the russian has yet to impress me other than playing chess with Dolan over melo.

Nets don't have anything on paper yet.

Part of the strategy is to get your opponent to commit or over commit.

I don't think the Nets are in a position to screw with the Knicks at this point...They have a new arena and need to field a team worthy of their new hometown...I'll like to see them offer Lin 12 mil in his 5th year and have to eat it...That will go a long way into opening their new stadium especailly if Lin doesn't pan out...

Yea, I could totally see that if they strike out with Deron.

Any team still playing and some not playing.

This is a bad sign. It means Lin is "done" and is just out for a pay day. The Knicks should pass on him and his arthritic knee.

Wow very dramatic thread. You can turn this into a motion picture. Lin means MORE money in Dolans pockets.
