Is Novak being (Briggs quoted) "low class"?

No. I didn't think Carmelo was either, but that depends on one's viewpoint of Carmelo. There are many people who are inclined to present/view his every action and statement in the worst possible light.

from my view, he is the focal point cuz of the contract he has and what many think he has the ability to do on the court. same for amare, these two are paid well to win. win and most of this stuff quiets down.

sidsanders - so let me get this straight, your view is the size of a contract can make a player a focal point for harsher criticism?

Now, this is getting good.

way to cut out what i said.. let me refresh it for you: from my view, he is the focal point cuz of the contract he has and what many think he has the ability to do on the court.

dont misquote.

do you think if he was 10th guy off the bench anyone would fuss that much over what he says. like it or not, what he is paid and what his talent level are put more pressure/blame/expectations/credit on the guy. he is the perceived leader of this team, with that goes the spoils and/or scorn.

Standards and Measurements

sidsanders - my apology for truncating your post.

from my view, he is the focal point cuz of the contract he has and what many think he has the ability to do on the court.

SidSanders - Who are "the many" who determine what Carmelo's standard of excellence is?

Would averaging 30 points and 15 rebounds make you happy? Or is it NYK championship or bust?

Just for kicks and giggles, if Jeremy Lin is paid a max-level contract in its third year, what is his measurable standard for being the focal point? (pun intended)

as i stated -- this is my view of why the guy gets heat. you will not find too many posts, if any, of me trashing the guy, though i think amare is terrible on def.

as for the stuff you ask:
"Who are "the many" who determine what Carmelo's standard of excellence is?" -- not sure it matters, wasnt really talking about that. the folks who give the guy grief are all gonna have different standards on that anyways. as of now, my take is the ROI hasnt been great given the current results. combine that with 10 years of poop, and 40 years of no titles makes for a frustrated fan base. recap: he gets scorn cuz the $ factor combined with him being in a leadership position and being the best player on the roster. folks are looking to him to lead the team back and it just hasnt happened yet. so they take it out on him...

"Would averaging 30 points and 15 rebounds make you happy? Or is it NYK championship or bust?" -- if he does that while making the ecf or better this year, that works for me. if this team struggles its gonna get real bad at msg. ill take ecf or better over stats. i think the fan base will too. just my view...

"Just for kicks and giggles, if Jeremy Lin is paid a max-level contract in its third year, what is his measurable standard for being the focal point? (pun intended)" -- since he is gone all i could do is speculate on the scenario:

1. team is in win now mode, whether lin was here or not. given the hypothetical scenario if they fail to win over the next 2 years, lin might have been gone by year 3 and be some other teams problem.
2. if he had helped them win a title, year 3 wouldnt have meant anything to me on the $ side, though the FO might care a lot more than me...
3. the team fails and he would be on the roster in year 3, he probably would have needed to play at an all-nba level for year 3 to not be bad in terms of $.

misterearl @ 7/21/2012 7:16 PM
sidsanders - thank you for the clarity. Eastern Conference Finals it is.

With regard to Jeremy Lin's ROI, it was not a question to speculate on his NYK expectations, it was a reality-based expectation for his Houston Rockets, by Jeremy's third year at a near-max salary.

Pretty sure Novak wouldn't have used the word ridiculous if the reporter hadn't asked him if he thought Lin's contract was ridiculous.

He did so in a nice way that says while the structure is ridiculous, the money isn't because Lin is valuable.

I don't think you can equate what Novak said to what Melo said at all.

The fact that this is even a talking point for the Knicks GOP is kinda sad.

The ridiculousness of the contract rendered the Knicks unable to match the contract ..Melo should not be able to say it tho..Novak is ok, we like him...

Papabear Says

What happened to freedom of speach?? All you Melo haters want Melo to just shut up his mouth and just don't say a word. But then you would have something negative to say about that. Melo can't win. Thats why no one really wants to come to the New York Knicks Not Ray Allen, Hill, Nash, LeBron, Bosh, Odoms, no one.

I agree i love the Knicks but I wouldnt want to play here if i could to many jerks

its hard to say, do not follow the rockets to say what the fans think. if he is helping them make decent playoff pushes houston fans might be ok with the cost. if they stink, he will hear it most likely no matter what he puts up stat wise.

SidSanders - forget the Houston Rockets fans. As a fan of the NBA, and a follower of pro hoops, where do you think Jeremy Lin's productivity (points, rebounds, assists, turnovers) should be after the third year of his contract?

Should the Rockets ownership have an expectation of reaching the Western Conference Finals by Lin's third year?

Or does it matter?

Just some Saturday morning pastries. The Carmelo question generated 5 pages of posts and plenty of fierce opinion. Does the same rhetoric apply to one of the favorites of the Garden faithful, Steve Novak?

He was told to say that and at 4.5 per he will listen

Damnit, Melo has even corrupted Novak!

Do you have a link or any evidence to support your claims?

you should keep your mouth shut, but that doesn't change the fact that it's true. considering Novak just got paid, it's up to him to prove last year wasn't a fluke too
ChuckBuck @ 7/23/2012 9:51 AM
It's because it's because Melo is fat and Novak is skinny! People like skinny people, not fat.

I disagree, Novak should not be talking about Lin's contract anymore than Melo. Let's not try to rationalize this. It doesn't matter what you said or what the context was - it's just wrong and you as a professional are not supposed to do it. Again people get fired because of this - it's a breach of professional conduct and etiquette.

But Knicks GOP is too funny -

Yeah, about as funny as the Melo-hating NuggNyets DNC.

I guess players have never spoken out about other's Koncaks, right? Players are not people, in the normal, everyday 9-5 job sense of the word. Anyone who thinks that's the case, are taking posting on a fan board wayyyy too seriously.

As Mike Brown dresses in the Jazz's locker room, he says that he isn't jealous of Koncak, and he seems to mean it. "I'm happy a young man with a family can make that kind of money," Brown says. "I have three or four millionaires on my team already. In two years I'll be a free agent, and if it's meant to be, I'll get mine. Jon's salary helps us all."

Indeed, it does, and only the shortsighted players fail to realize that. "A backup center helped everybody," says the Hawks' Dominique Wilkins, one of the league's superstars. "I can't feel jealous. There's no question he helped my contract directly." Hawk management renegotiated Wilkins's contract ($14 million for five years) just before signing Koncak. While many of the players are happy for Koncak and for what it portends for them, management is dismayed about parting with more of its cash. Contracts like Koncak's "create unrest, ill feelings, and I don't think it's fair," says the Los Angeles Lakers' general manager, Jerry West. "In some respects it's disgusting."
