Knicks · Testing Melo love (page 1)
I think all the slights he's been geting as a Knick are BS. The notion of him not being able to get a team out of the first round...the Nuggets don't get to the playoffs without him. What's more most of their teams lacked depth, so all the the opposition had to do was double on Melo and the rest of the team was sure to fall short.
But I'm not an apologist. Dolan gave up too much to get him, but dwelling on that is pointless. Given the changes of the last two season and the lockout crap (I still hate the owners and put it all on them), this will be his first real test in NY with a full training camp and pre-season with a set team. This is a team game, so he won't be able to do it alone and shouldn't have to. I expect more from Amare next season and think that he and Melo can play together, they just have to get some time under one coach with a core line up to make it happen.
That all said, he's a pro athlete and most of them are schmucks (trying to be nice here). He's still ight years better than LeBron as a personality. He wants to play and win in NY, and not even Amare can say that as definitively. He's a great player and that's all I ever want from him.
Very few players are interesting enough to be fans of when they're not wearing the right colors.
MJ - hate him, love him, born in Brooklyn ![]()
AI - the original throwback
LBJ - pre-Decision, pre-quitting
Wade - Another throwback talent; 2006 and prior.
Rodman - see relentless with little size and even littler brains
Don't spend enough time thinking about other teams' rosters to be a "fan".
Yeah, I know, don't spend enough time thinking.
I'm glad D'Antoni is gone- since then Melo's won me over a bit. The hate he gets is too much- media and some fans literally blame him for everything and are obsessed that he hated their beloved Jeremy and drove him out of town!
Under Woodson, he's playing defense, and lost weight before the olympics, and he was flat out awesome during that stretch where he pretty much single handedly got us into the playoffs against some tough apponents. For me, that stretch was just as exciting and impressive as the Linsanity run.
Then we had a disasterous playoffs (Tyson ill, Shump tears ACL, BD's knee explodes, Amar'e punches fire extinguisher), and somehow Melo gets blamed for all this- crazy! Why did we end up playing Melo ball in the playoffs? Because there was no one else left! At least he was still playing in the playoffs, and was key to the one win we did get. I really, really don't understand the hate Melo has gotten for the playoffs- to the point his detractors don't even mention that he got us into the playoffs with that run.
Oh but he dogged it before Woody took over. Yes he did, but loads of star players have done that when they didn't like their coach. Heck Ewing did it under Don Nelson.

He then plumpened up and stopped trying.I'm glad D'Antoni is gone- since then Melo's won me over a bit. +1 Liked.
Disliked him just like I dislike all NBA stars that play for opposing teams.
I mostly hate the stars that are in our division/conference far more but dik stars like Kobe and Lebron who act like diks off the court, I have mucho hate for as well.
Can't hate a player like KD because we really have no rivalry with him, he is an excellent player, and seems like a decent guy (for now).
Also, easy to hate the stacked teams that seem to have an unfair advantage like the Bulls (90's), the Lakers (Kobe/Shaq) and Miami.
I always root for the underdog if I don't have a personal stake/rooting interest.
The only time I am truly a fan of players from other teams is if they are rookies or very young talents such as Rubio, Faried, Irving, A Davis ... I like witnessing the birth of stars especially unheralded ones such as Lin (I would have had a strong rooting interest in Lin even if he played on another team)
With the Nuggets he's just another NBA player to me and I was never terribly impressed. He's really good. He's an all star. He's a top 20 player, but he's clearly 2nd tier to me.
As for his time on the Knicks... well, Im waiting to be won over (also defined as a hater). As a Knick fan he's been shoved down our throats as the new face of the franchise. I believe since Ewing left he's the 3rd guy. The first was Allan $100mm Houston. Houston was a really good player and nice guy but not close to franchise talent. The next guy was Starbury, who was closer talentwise, but obviously a mental midget, cancerous personality, etc etc
Next up behind franchise player door #3.... Carmelo Anthony.
The good:
Can dominate games.
Can create his own shot.
Excellent crunch time player.
Can play 2-3 positions and creates mismatches at each one.
One of the tougher guards in the league.
Wants to be in NY
The bad:
not a leader,
doesnt make players around him better,
one could argue he makes players worse,
difficult skill set to team other great/good players with.
Immature, and has been same player for 10 years in the league.
Is he coachable?
Hasnt made the Knicks better win the W/L column.
Too expensive.
Melo doesnt get a ton of hate around here. The hate is portrayed by the folks who have accepted him exactly has Dolan as sold him to us (fans), that Melo is Knick savior, bringer of future titles, face of the franchise and NYC "im coming home" golden boy (wasnt Marbs????). The simple fact is you cant be honest about what Melo has accomplished here without being attacked.
Melo didnt play hard for MDA. Spin: Your an MDA lover, or Amare doesnt play hard on defense so he quit to and you just hate Melo, etc etc
Melo has the worst playoff record of any NBA player with 50 playoff games: Spin: Poor teams, not his fault, he's just as good as Kobe or Wade and would have titles if on one of those teams
Melo has had ZERO impact on the W/L totals since being here: Spin: take your pick of the soup of the day
Melo was out of shape: Spin: lets ignore the direct quotes from the coaching staff and make Melo is fat jokes until its obvious anyone acknowledging that our $20mm a year doesnt take conditioning seriously is just another hater hating.
We could do this all day, but there are really two groups on this board.
Group A: Melo is a star, would have titles (or a playoff win) if not for other circumstances and people who are critical of his accomplishments are haters and have anti-melo agendas
Group B: What has this guy done for us since we traded our roster/future for him?

Very fair! Good take.

Thats not really sarcasm, as Im quite sure the "pro-melo at all costs group" surely believes the short post over the long one. Oh well.

Sorry - but many sports forums (and perhaps other forums as well) have devolved into the "two extremes pitted against one another" on every issue. Your take on the two Melo camps on this board just follow that pattern. Many of us probably do not fit into any of the two opinions of Melo that you outlined.....and actually probably are somewhere in the middle. However, this does not make for interesting blog commenting, so generally the posts that represent the extreme point of view - often generate the most extreme reactions and take precedent.
In reality - Melo is a star basketball player, but not at a level of top 5 players in the game that we often compare him to. As he has not won a title in the NBA, but was brought to the Knicks with the Hope of doing so.....he has a large target on his back. In reality...the Knicks did not trade their entire roster/future for Melo. The Knicks will most likely continue to make the playoffs in the near terms and the draft picks they gave up are not (and in all probability) will not be Lottery picks. The players they gave up have not done anything special. They have been able to work around cap/roster flexibility as well by bringing in Tyson, Kidd, Camby etc.
So...cheers from those of us in the middle who do not think everything is black or white....but actually shades or grey.
Melo had a great close to the season after an awful effort for most of the season. I respect his effort in the last month, but am I supposed to forget everything else he did since coming here? After some initial reticence I was behind the trade for Melo. I think if you want to win you have to go for it. However, Melo has to hold up his end of the bargain. NY paid a lot for him to come here and a couple of good months isn't proper repayment.

My shrine has bone from Donnies hip replacement, the Blood drained from Dices Knee, the Hair of Gallo, the seeds from Wilsons weed, and the Kidney stones from Larry!
Mine is in a hidden crawl space in my basement on a dirt floor. I keep in chaulk all the trades done in the last 10 years written on the walls, and uncooked kernals from the last Dale and Thomas popcorn I bought. My prize is the belly button lint I got on Ebay that was Ewings! It holds special powers. Its worth a ton becasue it still is moist! Kept in a special glass jar I had made!
Maybe sometime you can come over and we can pray over it together during a knick-Nugget game?

It's probably more because you show some critical thinking when you talk about Amare, but seem less thoughtful "when ya tells it like it is" when it comes to Melo.
Not really that serious, no reason to have to go four page letter about the Melo lovers and make threads like this. I don't see any Amare/Woodson/Lin/ect threads where the "realist" has to set all the lovers right.
Me thinks the lady doth protest too much............
On other team I will not even check on him.
