Knicks · Melo is playing Elite..... (page 5)

ah yes... the cirlelovemaking continues... on to MDA
Travla @ 12/10/2012 3:13 PM
The only thing Melo doesn't do enough of is getting assists. Lebron knows how to use the attention he gets to get his teammates involved, I wish Melo would learn it soon......that is all!!

stop the presses, drum roll... Melo has passed pretty well this year. Knicks as a team move the ball well and Melo does his part. He still has possesions where you and everyone else KNOWS he's gonna shoot but nobody is perfect.

"Enough of" compared to what? Right now he is playing PF and is average to below average in all the major categories (Rbs, Blocks, steals) other than PPG for that position. I think our team rebounding would be much better if he were moved down to SF but his scoring efficiency might drop a lot.

I'm OK with the shooting and yes, no ones perfect. There's a difference in just passing the ball and setting up an assist. With the attention Mello gets, he could average 6 or more assists easily. It's also on the coaches to point that out to him.

DAntoniMustGo @ 12/10/2012 3:39 PM
ahh TKF crying about Melo, what else is new.

Gallo is nothing more than a role player. He got exposed in the 4th quarter last night. Move on bro.

I'm not down on Melo, just pointing out that he could be even better in another way. The Knicks will outrebound few teams because the offense has 3 or 4 guys at or near the 3 point line when a shot is taken and the other team is already closer to the rim for a rebound. The offense works or they wouldn't be where they are record-wise....it could be tweaked to be more efficient.

A lot of players are hitting 3s at ridiculous percentages right now, though. Once those #s return to normal, I think this is closer to a mid/upper .600s team than a .750 team.

There lies the bigger picture:

Are the knicks elite, or plaing elite ball?

Same for Melo, is he elite or just playing up?

What qualifies one to the other?

The word "Elite" is bought to you by the letter "E".

In all my years of being a Knick fan, I've never witnessed other Knick fans berate and get upset when other Knick fans hold a fellow Knick up on a pedestal. Cant imagine people trying to shut down "Bernard King for MVP" threads, or "Mark Jackson is an elite pg" thread. Whats wrong with being fans of Knick players and expressing that on Ultimateknicks.com? Does some of the rhetoric go a bit too far, perhaps, but so-what, thats what fanatics do. Unless some of us are really Nyets or Bulls fans pretending to be Knick fans, dont understand why some go overboard to undervalue players that play for our Fav teams.

It's not the cool, hip thing to do. Bash the best player on the best team in the east even though he's on your favorite team is the current flavor.

Somber is in. Homer is out.

Anji @ 12/10/2012 4:30 PM
I'm not falling for this trap thread.

Melo has upped his game thus far. If people can't see it they're blind. For the stat junkies....

PER of 24 - Highest of his career
TS% of .569 - Highest of his career
EFG% of .514 - Highest of his career

The problem people have is that they expect him to be Lebron and he never will be. Amazing that Durant gets so much love but if you look up Durant's career numbers (5 years) and compare to Melo's first 5 years the numbers are almost identical. Durant played with Westbrook, Ibaka and Harden and now plays with the same except swap out Harden for Kevin Martin.

Did Denver WANT to get rid of Melo? NOPE, he left them with no choice. Why were the Nets prepared to throw a max contract at him? Does anyone seriously think that there is a GM in basketball who would not want Melo? Yeah he has flaws in his game but what player doesn't?

Look at all the greats who have ever played the game and then look at their teams. Basketball will always be a team game and no matter how great of a player, the player won't win jack without the right mix around him.

IMHO, Melo has finally been surrounded with a team that allows him to do what he does best and who help minimize his flaws. Personally, I don't care about his playoff winning percentage or anything that happened in Denver. Melo is still only 28 and has a ton of ball left in him. His career is far from over and when it is I hope that during his HOF speech he speaks about how finally bringing a championship to New York was his greatest acheivement.

Not going to argue about elite, stats or any of that nonsense. I'm about taking it one game at a time and enjoying our 15-5 start.

Not sure how any Knick fan could disagree with the above.

WOW Bonn glad you finally see the light! You were a big proponent of playing Melo at the 4 and getting killed on the boards

Its not wrong. Whats wrong is when others go bat crazy when anything remotely critical is said about the players. In the end we all want the team to succeed. Every now and then you get 1 or 2 trolls and everyone gets categorized unfairly as a homer/hater. Me? I sit by and laugh with the popcorn

I am very surprised by his rebounding. He was a good rebounder at SF and I thought that he'd be at least an average rebounder at PF - around 8.0 a game. His rebounding rate (8.9 per 48 min) puts him at 72nd of the 94 PFs though. Even though it hurts our rebounding, the team may be better off with him at PF though.
gunsnewing @ 12/10/2012 6:24 PM
and remember a lot of his rebounds comes off his own misses from point blank. He is not tall and athletic enough to play the 4 every night. Amare is not a great defender/rebounder but he is big and 9rebs out of the 4 with a block per game is better than 6rebs
