Knicks · felton and chandler playing like *** this game (page 3)

Feltons bruises are a BS excuse unless those bruises were there his whole career.

Why do some people never seem to remember anything beyond the last 2 to 3 games? Last time Felton was with us EXACTLY the same thing happened- started off hot, then started shooting poorly in December and January. He is what he is- he is inconsistent- we knew this. He has good shooting games, and bad shooting games, and keeps shooting regardless. He wins you more games than he loses. He's been good for us for the most part. I like him, but I don't delude myself that he's supposed to be an allstar- he's average because of his inconsistency.

Your assumptions that they see any good are way overblown...Dude is what he is, a nice pick up on the cheap that can and has helped us to 20-8...We knew we weren't getting Chris Paul..

The Rockets' Sabermetrician GM deserves some credit. He's got the youngest team in the league (average experience = 1.9 years), cap space, picks, and they're playing at a .550 level in the west. Considering what he had to work with (boring city in the middle of Texas that won't attract FAs), he's doing very well.

That's pretty darn good for a team of mostly rookies and 2nd year players. They'd probably be around .650 if they were in the east.

He's gotten the team's winning percentage in games he's played almost up to the level it's at in games he misses!

Just playing along. I don't actually think the team is better without him but I still wish we'd put ourselves in a position to get the max contract FAs I'd been targeting instead of Melo Amare.

It's part of the picture - Like I said before, I take the average of wins produced and wins shares because they each have unique strengths. The position adjustment is the biggest strength of WP. Melo's rebounding and shot-blocking have been brutal for a PF (WS ignores this) but obviously his 3 point shooting has been outstanding. I think the average of the two (.141) is pretty reasonable. If you adjust him to an F rather than PF, his WP goes up to .113 and the WP-WS average is .159.

Ok. Now it fits.

Bonn,

How does WP or WS deal with a player that boxes out their (bigger) man and not allow them to get the rebound?

I very often see Melo face guard box his man allowing another knick to get the rebound. That is smart basketball and I can't stand when players try to out rebound a bigger man. Its dumb. He is playing it correctly and it is not showing up in the stats.

Just another example where you need a combo of advanced stats and advanced scouting.

If your team gets the rebound, it still helps you although not as much as if you got the rebound. That's because of the team adjustment. You basically get a small credit or penalty for the team you play on - this is an imperfect attempt to incorporate contributions not included in box scores.

I've always said, though, the best models will combine informed intuition and the advanced stats although in most areas of life you get the best outcomes when you give more than 50% weight to the stats.
