Knicks · Melo trade coming back to bite us (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 1/12/2013 9:37 AM
He's a great player but when we gave so many young players and picks when we could've waited and signed for nothing outright was a killer. Also why does Houston get picks from us in every trade and we get nothing for Lin. And lee for amare is a bust
gunsnewing @ 1/12/2013 9:45 AM
Queue 130 pages.....

Let me start it off

Amare for Lee was killer

We could've used Lin right now an at worst had a nice young asset which we don't have now with the exception of Shumpert coming back from torn acl and mcl

franco12 @ 1/12/2013 9:47 AM
its not just the Melo trade - its every deal made over the last 5-10 years.

This franchise is essentially over-leveraged like a bank - and they borrow against tomorrow for a mediocre today.

Letting Lin go for nothing is just one more example of mismanagement.

Signing Amar'e when we missed out on Lebron - another move that might have been better played by keeping Lee (possibly at a home team discount?) rather than signing a star just for the sake of making a move.

gunsnewing @ 1/12/2013 9:52 AM
So who's fault is this really?

Trading Lee, adding Amare

Trading half the team for Melo

Choosing not to resign Lin in an act of rage

Answerman says....

Jimmy Bean Dolan!!

not Grunwald or the previous GM

REALLY? Are yall gonna start this again?? NOPE NOT ME SMFH
smackeddog @ 1/12/2013 10:25 AM
Wilson Chandler is permanently injured. We got Felton back. Only players we gave away were Gallo and Mosgov- I don't get this thread at all.

Without signing Amar'e and letting Lee go, Melo and Tyson wouldn't of signed with us (or Kidd or Sheed etc)- that is a fact that they have both stated.

Great post...to flesh this out, we essentially traded Zach, crawford, lee, and two lottery pics just to have the OPTION of signing lebron james and another big free agent. That strategy failed, and all we had to show for it was Amare, who is broken down.

Thats the reason why we had to rely on older talent...not the melo trade. We gave up mediocre talent for a top 5 player in his prime. Get real. The cupboard was bare when melo was traded her, because of the mismanagement of the previous regime.

Donnie walsh is to blame. he was a terrible gm. truth is truth.

I can't blame them for going after it with our window with this geezer squad, but yes, the Knicks do not develop young players, do not have patience, and are always chasing short term answers. It's not the Melo trade, it's just the overall philosphy. On a well built team, when a vet goes down, it would open up an opportunity for young guys waiting for playing time. It's crazy we got nothing waiting in the wings. Nothing.

He wasn't great specifically in regards to hiring Dantoni but you don't think he was under pressure from Dolan to add Amare and trade the team for Melo especially with the Garden renovations and raising of ticket prices?

We got Amar'e, who got Felton and Melo, who got JR and Tyson, who got Kidd, Camby and Sheed. Fair or not, Zach Randolph and Crawford were not draws to other players.

And I get so sick of this blazing hypocrisy and revisionist history. People HATED Zach for his lack of defense. They spent Jamal Crawford's entire stint here blasting him for shot selection and poor defense. People wined none stop about 'Avid Lee' and his complete lack of D. Now they are gods, while people blast the players we do have. Its the same c*** over and over! AAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!

gunsnewing @ 1/12/2013 10:35 AM
I never wined about Lee. He was my favorite Knick. So I have the right to whine

However I was in favor of going after Lebron and simply signing Lee would not have netted us Lebron. Just a bad situation all around. If I remember correctly Briggs was against signing Lebron so he can whine about Lee

Thats because NY sucks as a sports city, and is hyper-critical of its own players, and wants 'em run out of town after a two game losing streak. Look how people around here talk about woody, felton, and melo --- and melo is a top 5 player. Look the at the way we treated Ewing and other great stars. Ny'ers are entitled idiots with agendas.

Dont put me in that category. I always knew Zach, Jamal, and lee could ball. They were just in the wrong environment, team wise. We gave them up for peanuts. In a vacuum, that has had a negative effect on our current roster. We should have at least received decent talent in return. Is anyone we traded them for still on the roster? And they were players in their prime.

Dog,thats why I said I wont respond to the Melo trade hate. Theres always someone waiting in the wings for someone to fail then they feel they have the RIGHT to dig up stupid things to say about that someone.ITS UNREAL.

gunsnewing @ 1/12/2013 10:43 AM
Good point Seb. It just goes to show how Isiah royally screw up any value this franchise had built and how it was perceived by the rest of the league. We were so awful that Marbury, Zach, Crawford and Lee were given up for absolutely nothing in return now they are succeeding with Golden state, Memphis and the Clips

Isiah brought those guys in....it was walsh who traded them for nothing, and screwed us. In Marbury's case, he was allowed to walk, even tho he could have been a valuable commodity as an expiring. Major assets were squandered again and again during the Dantoni/Walsh regime.

Im not mad at the strategy, because Lebron is a once-in-a-lifetime player, but for what we surrendered, for nothing, that strategy had to work. It didnt. Grumwald picked up the pieces.

toad @ 1/12/2013 10:48 AM
When you have no FO consistency, and you go through consecutive GMs and new visions of trying to clean house of the mess that the previous one created, with the pressure of doing it quickly, you're going to see a lot of sell low/buy high.
gunsnewing @ 1/12/2013 10:49 AM
Fair enough but their values greatly diminished under Isiah as GM and coach. Not sure what Walsh could've done when the organization was deadset on getting Lebron

Well said..that's exactly my point. Ultimately it all falls on the owner

so basically its isiah's fault that Walsh traded great talent for nothing....especially getting ripped off in the Lee deal. Was it Isiah's fault that Walsh fell in love with a complete bust in Anthony Randolph, trading a young, budding 20/10 guy for him? Cmon, lets be fair.
