An MRI reveals that Carmelo Anthony is suffering from a small left shoulder tear, Daily News has learned. Knicks hopeful no surgery needed
Frank Isola @FisolaNYDN
The plan, according to a Knicks source, is to give Carmelo's shoulder 3 to 4 weeks to heal on its own. If not, then surgery is probable

Have to give him kudos for playing through it
Not surprised, he's been favoring it since David West pulled it out in the regular season.
How ironic was that last indiana game in the regular season. We only played the main guys that game to get home court advantage. Melo ends up getting injured and home court did not even last more than 1 game. We could have lost home court by not playing our mains that game and still had a much better shot at winning in the second round.
First off, respect for playing through that especially since it popped out a few times during both series.
Second, I said all playoffs that he didn't look right, his shot was off and the follow through wasn't there ... but whatever, he didn't use it as an excuse so I won't either although other players that have had a shoulder issue took months to look right.
Third, great timing. Allows him to have surgery, recover and get ready for training camp.
no complaints about melo from me,
we know he's not lebron, and he came out and was the only basketball player on knicks team in playoffs,
the only basketball player we have.
I hope this makes anti-Melo people appreciate him more. He did everything he could and was injured in a way most wouldn't play thru. Huge respect for him with a warrior effort in the playoffs.

Never convinced one way or another but I actually thought for a time there was a possibility he kept grimacing & flexing the shoulder setting up a excuse --- if he didn't play well, it was the shoulder. Never really saw him complain about the shoulder after makes. Well, I was dead wrong -- the man has my deepest apologies and respect.

The guy has a history of shooting poorly in the playoffs, career 40%..
Great for playing through pain, but now I really question why he avg 1 ast with a bum shoulder ..smh

+1. Melo's shot was really on pre-injury. It would have been nice to see how the Knicks would have done if his shot was on despite others struggles.

Are you kidding? He was shooting at almost 60 % from the field in April prior to David West hurting his shoulder in the third to last game of the season. Guy plays through that and you question him.

+1
I was very critical of him for his crap shooting as well but I respect the hell out of him for toughing it out and not complaining once.
That's why it's so important not to fuck around during the season. We won 54 and had a serious 2 month lull. Had it not been for that Melo wouldn't have been playing that game he got injured in. He would've been resting. Now maybe we would've been playing for the 1 seed, but still. Next season I'd sign up for 54 wins, but I also want to be consistent all year.
a small left shoulder tear might refer to the labrum, which is a fibrous sheath-like covering, or it could mean something in the rotator cuff which is a complex set of muscles.
a small tear in either of these tissues in the not shooting arm really will not have a dramatic effect on your shooting motion. painkillers can go a long way to desensitizing the area and of course the compression sleeve that he was covered in only help to keep the area protected. not requiring surgery further lowers the severity people seem to be assuming. grimacing in pain is not an indication of the level of pain a player is in.
lets not lionize this guy. his shoulder is not the issue... his BBIQ, footwork, savvy, conditioning, and heart are.

Says the guy who probably has never played sports on any level past grade school.
Not surprising. It was obvious he has been hurt since the celtic series. The good thing about melo is that he is tough and plays through many injuries

Remember he hurt it before the season ended. It looked like it popped out. A tear is different. Can't imagine having that and Garnett and West tugging and banging it. He didn't bring it up because he wasn't making excuses. It was obvious it hurt him, the media brought it up.

As far as his shooting is concerned - which is something a lot of us has killed him for - his shoulder is the issue. I'd have to believe he doesnt shoot that poorly if not for the injury. We also dont know if he needs surgery. He very well could. Theres also no way you truly believe that his shooting motion would not be effected by the pain from the tear. You need both arms to go through the shooting motion and when you have a tear in your shoulder, whether its on the shooting arm or not, its gonna effect something.

When you look at his month of April and see that he was shooting close to 60% pre injury that makes sense. His shooting tailed off when his shoulder got hurt.

Yeah just checked it out. Its seems pretty apparent. Kinda makes me hate David West...
