Knicks · Demote Woodson back to an assistant (page 1)

RonRon @ 6/2/2013 5:29 PM
While bringing in a new Head Coach that will hold players accountable and that is NOT afraid to call out the mental errors of Melo/JR Smith and whoever
One that will develop and play younger players/rookies that allows us to push the tempo that we need instead of play veterans that lack the speed/size/athleticism and abilities vs contending teams

A coach that would do a better job utilizing its rotations and preparing EVERYONE to manage the minutes while emphasize TEAM ball on offense with ball movement/player movement, use of screens both on and off the ball, running/executing plays, and NOT just a spread out offense/ISO offense
On defense, it needs tweaks, Woodson's philosophy, of always helping in every position and SWITCHING whenever the offense once us to switch with a pick, is ridiculous
It works at times when you have a HIGH BB IQ team that plays hard, a few LOCKDOWN DEFENDERS in addition to having a team with good speed/quickness/athleticism/size but we don't have such players, in fact they are slow and not mobile, which makes the rotation/ability to recover much harder

With the comments of Amare, Chandler, and Iman, it is quite obvious that the team does not believe in Woodson's system and is not happy
Melo will always want the ball in his hands and want to initiate the OFFENSE as other's stand around and do nothing, and play "hero" ball
It is not about making Melo happy, it is about about making Melo concentrate on doing other things besides scoring and giving the effort to do so
There is no point in getting a PG if his job is to dribble up then give the ball to Melo, as the other 4 players stand around and watch
Unless we are getting a Cp3 type player (Melo will not respect the PG and demand the ball at all times) and he will not look to run plays and force the offense to be initiated through him with NO DECEPTION

Melo must realize he must play different when he changes from SF/PF and depending on the strengths of who he is defending
He need's a coach with a team to limit his freedom because he simply is not the "legend" he thinks he is, and should learn how to make players around him better

This is not a stab at Melo, it is mean to be a stab at Woodson's lack of system, flaws on OFF and DEF, inability to make adjustments that work, and always favoring some players and not giving other's players a chance when the same guys continue to struggle
Till we do so, it doesn't matter who we draft or who we add with our limited funds, so I hope this is something Grunwald and management considers about with the East getting healthy and improving with more flexibility/cap space/ and get better with development vs our over the hill plays and low IQ core

AnubisADL @ 6/2/2013 6:21 PM
We came in 2nd place in the East and made it to the 2nd round with a depleted roster.

Woodson isn't going any where.

Nobody replaces their coach like that.

he only has one guaaranteed year left, the Knicks aren't winning squat next season anyway.

At most, you could say we had a banged up roster, not a depleted roster.

Depleted is the proper term.

Accountability was what Woodson preached and he was the one that should be accountable for inexcusable performances in the playoffs. Continuously throwing JR Smith out there hoping he will get hot. Not holding JR Smith accountable for off court BS. Never calling out his players for poor performances. I recalled Greg Popovich call out his entire starting lineup and benching them.

Calling the same damn isolation plays again and again. Not having the Knicks prepared for playoff basketball. With that said he did have a very good regular season. I want to give Woodson another chance but to tell you guys the truth next year if the Knicks make the playoffs it will be more of the same. Now I know why Atlanta dumped him his team and system had peaked and I believe the same here because he is running Atlanta offense here.

I personally would move on and call Brian Shaw to coach the Knicks to get a new system in.

No, depleted means you've used something up and it's now gone or missing. None of our key players were missing; they were just banged up, which is normal for the post-season, especially for old guys.

Most ridiculous thread of the Month

First, no NBA GM is "demoting" a head coach. Demoting Woodson after winning 54 games, with the best Knicks winning percentage in franchise history, is just plain stupid. General Managers do no demote coaches. You fire them and move on.

Stupid? Because in a year with multiple injuries, he lost to a potential Eastern Conference Champion? Stupid.

Stupid? Because he transformed a petulant, problem, unpredictable guard into sixth man of the year? Stupid.

Stupid? Because he earned the respect of his players to hold together, become resilient, without any drama or conflict? Stupid.

Yeah, I said it. Stupid.

Bonn1997 @ 6/3/2013 10:19 AM
How does 54 wins qualify as the best winning percentage in franchise history?
misterearl @ 6/3/2013 10:21 AM
sheesh

Bonn1997 wrote:How does 54 wins qualify as the best winning percentage in franchise history?

Bonn1997, it does not. You could look it up Woodson's overall record as Knicks head coach. Rather that being quick on the trigger, do some research.

Stupid

The Knicks as a franchise have struggled with one major flaw. Continuity. Especially as it relates to the chain of command from General Manager to head coach. It has been fragile since the days of Red Holzman and Eddie Donovan, through to Van Gundy and Ernie Grunfeld. So what is the answer to finally gaining the respect of the league and changing the culture from losing to winning?

Fire the coach.

Stupid.

Relax. Your sentence was confusing.
I'm assuming the winning percentage you're citing is excluding playoff games.

And for the record, I'm on your side here Earl. I don't think it makes sense to keep the same "big 3" intact and hire a new coach every year. That's just switching seats on the Titanic.
Bonn1997 @ 6/3/2013 10:33 AM
Well I just looked it up and I see that Woodson is 2nd to Pat Riley. It's a bit silly to talk about winning percentages with when there's less than 100 total wins though. Lots of other coaches had slightly lower winning percentages over much longer periods

RonRon,

Really? 54 games and your going to demote?

Is this a video game?

It's baseball cards. Fantasy league. Amateur hour at Real GM.

All of the above

Nalod @ 6/3/2013 10:53 AM
In some places you win 54 games you get an extension in your contract!

In RonRons world he is the emperor who declares: " A championship or die! Back to the bench with you"

Playoffs expose weaknesses on teams. For us, it was Tysons immune system and JR's self esteem issues dealing with success. Indy was able work us pretty good. They have Miami on the ropes, who ever thought this?

They are wearing down Bosh and Wade! Many are "blaming" those two for faultering, but not much credit to Indy for wearing them down and exposing their weekness: REBOUNDING!!!!!

Lebron is carrying them now.

Woodson is not the problem with this team. In fact, there is no cause to blame. Its just what it is!

Didn't the clippers fire Delnegro. Didn't Atlanta fire Woody after 53 wins. It's been done before I think Woodson is an excellent regular season coach but playoffs are very tough for him because the offensive style he runs is not conducive for the playoffs.
