Toure Murry Accepts Training Camp Invite From Knicks
Sep 05, 2013 6:26 PM EDT real GM

Toure Murry has accepted a training camp invite from the New York Knicks.

Murry was also pursued by the Miami Heat, but he played for the Knicks in Summer League and wanted to build upon his success with the club.

Toure Murray - New York Knicks starting PG and rookie of the year and no need for Rondo

Thats what I dream about anyway

The kid's good. Plays like he belongs on both ends.

I dream of an HBO documentary that follows the lives of Knicks teammates Rajon Rondo and Ron Artest asthey navigate fame, pressure and competition while maintaining their mental health. It would be cool if Lamar Odom made guest appearances, but not as a Knick. All joking aside, I like Toure and I think a defensive backcourt of Shump and Toure would be fun as heck to watch.

Psyched Murry chose the Knicks. Hopefully the Knicks make smart decisions with their roster and Murry is signed.

Tell me about it!!! All I could think about is how great this kid would look next to Shump as a defensive tandem. Also he's got a smooth game and can get to the basket, run the floor and pass pretty darned good for a converted SG. I don't know if Leslie will make it but I think this kid has a real chance to stick if given a chance.

Great news, was impressed with Murry's SL performance. Sets up for some good competition going into camp. Also like that the Heat lost out, heh heh. Let's face it, Murry has a better chance of getting a ring with the Heat but he chose NY. Camby did the same thing last season. Its a welcome departure from players using NY to get a better deal somewhere else or just giving us lip service. Hope that some stars feel the same way in a couple of years.

I really don't have too much history on toury murray. How does he compare to felton?

Not to get everyone all nostalgic, but Toure Murry kinda reminds me of Derek Harper.
He has real potential and a pretty good defender...

And to add to the question since I only caught highlights of summer league, how is he at running an offense? I really liked Toney Douglas once upon a time...

Murry is a converted SG who actually is a better PG already than TD or Shump. He has a natural passing ability and he's really smooth with the ball.

I have mix feelings on Murry defense. in the SL he got away with letting his man blow by him and then reaching thst would get him hurt on the real level. He has flashed potential so I would let him and leslie fight it out. It's not about this year with Murry but next year when Beno & Prigs maybe gone.

I fully expect that Woody and the staff would help Murry learn better defensive technique. He is often too aggressive and indiscriminate as to when he puts on pressure. He would learn when to turn up the pressure and how to keep proper spacing so he doesn't get beat off the dribble. The key thing is that he's got great length and quick hands and he's like an octopus when he traps a PG.

his defense is not the issue. my concern is on offense. can he shoot? can he facilitate?

i think hes more of an athlete at this point instead of a PG or SG

Well if you watched him play in SL, he wasn't bad for this stage of his transition from SG to PG. He actually looks more like a PG than Shump has ever looked. Murry has some actual good court vision. Of course he needs work, but that's obvious for a kid learning to play PG at this level.

Here's a playoff game with Murry at PG. He's #9. Gotta watch for a while to get a sense of his ability since it's a full game video.

Might as well come in because JR is an idiot who can't be counted on.
nixluva @ 9/7/2013 3:18 AM
From watching video of him and seeing him in SL, it seems to me that Murry needs to use his length and stay back off smaller quicker guards. Learning the proper distance from his man and using his length to his advantage is going to make a huge difference for him at the NBA level.

There's also some footage of Jeremy Tyler in the video above. I think he's worth keeping on the roster and allowing to heal from his foot injury. Both kids have some real potential. Tyler in particular.

About a month ago, the Miami Heat tempted former Wichita State player Toure Murry with an invitation to training camp. After much debate, Murry stuck with the team that stuck with him.

Murry, a 6-foot-5 guard, accepted an invitation to the New York Knicks training camp and will leave his hometown of Houston early next week. Training camp begins Sept. 30 in Greenburgh, N.Y. He knows the Knicks will go to camp with three veteran point guards — Raymond Felton, Pablo Prigioni and newcomer Beno Udrih. He sees that competition as an opportunity to learn.

“I felt like New York was the best situation for me,” Murry said. “They've been loyal and they've been after me. I know the coaching staff. I’m familiar with the players who are going to training camp.”

An offer from the two-time defending NBA champion Heat did force Murry to think and think again.

“It was hard,” he said. “I was thinking about it every day.”

Murry played for the Knicks in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and impressed team personnel ranging from coach Mike Woodson to former star Larry Johnson.

“He does everything,” Woodson said on NBA TV during the Summer League. “He can score. He sees the floor very well and he gets after it defensively.”

Murry averaged 7.6 points and 2.6 asssists in five Summer League games.

Toure reminds me a little bit of Darrell Walker, another former Knick. They're both rangy defenders and converted point guards with the ability to contribute in a number of areas and score just enough t keep the offense moving.

Add Murry....Put Leslie in the D-league.
