Knicks · Chris Copeland Teammates comments speaks volumes. (page 1)

This is for all who thought so little about Copeland lack of playing time against the Pacers wouldn't have helped the Knicks defeat the Pacers in 2nd rd and play Miami in Conf finals. Who ever didn't tell Woody to play Copeland needs to held accountable too.

Chris Copeland, 29, bounced around Europe before finally making it to the NBA with the Knicks last season. His ability to stretch the floor caused problems for Indiana when Knicks coach Mike Woodson, however briefly, played Copeland at center. The move forced the Pacers to take Roy Hibbert out because the All-Star center struggles to defend 25 feet from the basket. (That is the player who kicked our butt when it counted.

According to Copeland, when he arrived for training camp both Pacers coach Frank Vogel and Hibbert told him, “We’re happy we don’t have to worry about you anymore.”

Woodson was criticized for not giving Copeland a bigger role in the postseason, when Copeland averaged 11 minutes during the playoffs. At times he appeared to be a better alternative to both Amar’e Stoudemire and Kenyon Martin.

I couldn't believe when people started to ridicule the thought that Cope wouldn't have made a BIG difference in the series vs the Pacers if used correctly. SMH

Maybe Woodson's part of the military-industrial complex to keep Cope and his fabulous defensive prowess off the floor. You do realize, of course, that other than Steve Novak, he was the worst defensive player statisically on the Knicks last season, right?

But of course, that could just be part of the corporate conspiracy to keep Belgian professionals out of the league...

Our roster last yr in the playoffs wasn't going to defensively shut down the Pacers, the team we had in the playoffs was built to outscore the opponents, that how we won with some defensive stops here and there along the way.

Shut down defense? Who's talking about shut down defense? Cope can't play any defense, let alone shut down defense.

No team's going to even smell those stops "here and there along the way" with someone on the floor who's pushing 30 and still can't figure out how to cover the PNR or what to do on a backdoor screen. Cope sure can score though. Would have been extremely entertaining to watch him be part of the trade baskets consistently while hoping the Pacers would miss plan.

And we were built to outscore our playoff opponents with JKidd on the floor? How, exactly, was that part of the offensive build?

smackeddog @ 10/7/2013 10:59 AM
I thought Woody should have played him more, but you can't just assume he would have scored 30 points per game at a high %. He could have got the time and absolutely stunk.

Interestingly after his agent spun the line about the Knicks choosing not to have him even at a substantial discount, Cope seems to suggest it was more his choice. Add in the treatment Knicks management gave him after he left (pretending like he never existed), sounds like a typical 'Dolan felt betrayed' tale- I guess Cope took the money and ran (don't blame him, he's 29, but what's the point in making out the Knicks refused to have him back).

GustavBahler @ 10/7/2013 11:08 AM
I didn't like seeing Cope glued to the bench in the playoffs either. Also didn't want him going to an EC rival, but I'm not all broken up about him leaving. Watched the end of the Bulls/Pacers preseason game where Cope literally jacked up three bricks in about 40 seconds, then on the next trip called for the ball again and was promptly ignored. Even the announcers were in disbelief. He was doing stuff like that in NY and that doesn't include Cope's D.

The notion that Cope with increased minutes would have turned aroud the series is funny.

What happened when they put someone to cover cope on the parimeter?

Lets see what happens when they have to deal with Bargnani!

Mark West was one tough Hombre and pushed us around pretty good. Him and Hibbert were tough for us.

I think Mark West played for the Suns in the 90s. David West and Hibbert do give the Knicks fits though.

West does, but I disagree with you about Hibbert. Don't believe the Hibbert Hype, Chuckbuck! I posted the stats in another thread a few days ago, but Tyson has outplayed Hibbert the last two regular seasons when healthy (Hibbert only averaged 6pts 6 rebs this season against us, I think)- playoffs Tyson got whooped, but he was ill and injured.

I'm not even bothering with the Flu Tyson matchup. That's been done a trillion times here.

I'm talking about Hibbert's overall presence on the floor:

If Tyson or any center on the Knicks could stretch the floor consistently, we wouldn't have Hibbert crowding the paint area.

Mike Woodson does not have the great young coaching mind that Vogel has. Woodson is good at motivating his players as evident by how we've avoided long losing streaks. But when it come to game and adjustments other coaches run circles around him. This is who he is. Going back to Atlanta. He will get you in the playoffs but that's about it. He will be severely out coached every time. Fortunately for him he has the built in excuse that the roster is flawed and clumsy. Making him the perfect coach for a team going nowhere for 2yrs

So....

Copeland is greater than sliced bread fails, switch to:

Playoffs Hibbert is greater than Any Tyson = fail

Then Switch to:

Frank (I seen ALL the tapes] Vogel is greater than Woodson.

When and if that fails, switch to

Paul George is better than 10 Melos,

When and if that fails, switch to

Donnie Walsh is better than 40 Grunnies/Mills...

will someone please say that playa is right..please.. tell him that with copeland the knicks would have swept their way to the NBA finals and then swept the spurs.. as long as copeland was playing... because this dude will continue on with this forever... he just can't take being wrong...

This is the same dude who pretty much ran with the notion that don chaney was the "architect" of that rockets team that won two titles.. that rudy T.. was just the beneficiary of the hard work and intelligence of the "architect" Don chaney...

Playa... give it up bro..

suggesting that the knicks playing copeland more would have shifted this series is ridiculous.. just stop it.... don't abuse the privilege we have to be able to start threads....

When and if that fails (should Mills suddenly be replaced by IT, who we all know taught Walshie everything he doesn't know)

then

Herbert Simon's strangulated hemmorhoids are more intelligent than Jimmie Dolan,

should that fail,

Indiana has a better recent history than our sad sack, living on the fumes of the '70's franchise

if then,

Blue and yellow is more manly and aesthetically pleasing than blue and orange

if then,

Indiana real estate is a better investment than this smelly, overcrowded sinkhole we all follow here on UK

Finish. End program. If necessary, restart.

Don't stop there......Keep going!

Break it down, break it ALL DOWN!!!

All better now?

And what happens if Copeland has a big year for th Pacers this year? What will everyone be saying then?

Personally I'd rather had kept him, and the team should have offered him a deal to refuse.

He knows how to score, that wont go away....he'll do well off their bench

We lack bench scoring with JR and Amare out, could have done with keeping him, but he chose the pacers.

Playa you were right. I'm sorry I doubted you the gov mint brain waves were controlling me.

Not sure how Vogel is handing out preseason minutes but I was able to catch the second half of the Pacers game Saturday night. Cope didn't play until the final 3 minutes of the fourth quarter. Hill was playing most of the second half. Maybe Vogel is going to play Hill one game and Cope the next but if not it appears Hill is ahead of Cope on the depth chart. Obviously too early to tell but before calling Cope the savior of the Pacers I think it is important to note that he got third string, not in the rotation minutes on Saturday.
