Seth Curry cut by GS Chris Smith makes the Knicks. Its going to look like we had a pre established deal like the one Joe Smith had--someone will open their mouth.

Travla @ 10/25/2013 2:34 PM
President & GM Steve Mills announced that the NY Knicks have waived Diogu, Leslie, Powell, Tyler & Douglas-Roberts. So Smith, Aldrich and Murray make the team but I feel they will cut Smith after the season starts so he gets his guaranteed money.....that's my hope, anyway.
misterearl @ 10/25/2013 2:37 PM
Travla - if it was about money, Dolan could have written a check.

This is far worse and erodes any notion of "best five play"

Chris Smith did nothing in public view to make anyone think he was worthy of a roster spot.

Zero

I hate pre-arranged contracts.

Nothing is an open tryout anymore. It's not what you do or know, it's who you know...

Merit was definitely not in play here.

This kind of makes anyone who supports the Knicks financially--meaning anyone--especially the fans who buys tickets as a slap in the face to their support. MSG is a 4-5B dollar organization--who are they bowing down too?

skeng @ 10/25/2013 2:43 PM
I'm so fucking close to hating this franchise. It's not even funny.

I read somewhere that his contract is structured that way, Smith has to be on the opening night roster to get his money.

Really hate to see this but we all could see it comin. I'm sure Woody doesn't like it, cuz he could've made it seem less obvious by playing the kid if he was fully on board with it. He kind of made it clear he wasn't playing the kid cuz he didn't deserve it. This is all above his head.

In the end they'll cut him if Tyler is able to come back healthy. I can't see how they just let him go if he can come back healthy, but remember he's a LONG way away from being able to play so this deal for Smith isn't as bad as it seems right now. They weren't going to keep Aldrich and Diogu. I think Diogu should get picked up by someone given his strong play. Smith is just holding a spot and getting paid while they wait on Tyler.

What if another team snatches Tyler? He's just going to wait on the Knicks offer after they cut his ass?

Aren't there penalties for things like this? A player signing for a promise to sign his brother? Like loss of multiple draft picks?

It's hard to prove tho.

the quicker we waive him, the more suspect it seems in my opinion.

JesseDark @ 10/25/2013 2:59 PM
I hope this is the scenario that plays out. CAA will be happy and we can move on.

Yup, it's called circumventing the cap, and I believe the Twolves paid royally for it. We're in dangerous territory.

I'd rather we just kept him all year to reduce the risk of being punished. Maybe we cut Aldrich to make room for Tyler when he's healthy and if he isn't picked up

Right...unless the Knicks had a signed agreement to say they would keep Chris if JR signed with them, which I highly doubt. Suspicious and shady but not breaking the rules.

Knixkik @ 10/25/2013 3:21 PM
Yes its bad that they gave the spot to a non-nba talent, but at the end of the day its the 15th spot on the roster, it really doesn't matter that much.
