Also, use the dam farm system for once. Can't always overspend for veteran name clunkers.
The problem is that you can't go out and overpay for two non Yankee players who won't have anything close to the production of Cano and say we should restrain in not meeting Cano's demands...Talk radio is saying 200 over 8 could have gotten it done ...We overpay by 30 mil for Ellsbury and not Cano??..And somehow that's a good move??
The Yankees don't know what they want. Yea they got burned by Arod but then you give ellsbury 7 for $153?

Would love to have Cano at 200 over 8, but even Cano's father mentioned he'd only do a 10 year deal and right now the Yanks have to address pitching over all else anyways.
Getting McCann and Elsbury over Grandy and Cano(Combined $300m in salary) is a good tradeoff.
Question how do you guys think Joe Gerardi feels about this?

Is decent. Culture change. Love to see what happens next
Elsbury had a Brady Anderson like career year where he hit 32 hrs, 3 times more than his career average,Yanks are paying him off that year thinking he can do that at the Stadium, he is constantly hurt, alarm bells anyone??..Arod???..Joe Mauer had the same kind of break out year, once..hmmm....Those years are Cano's average year...

im sure he's happy to have ellsbury, since it allows the yankees to play a different brand of baseball - one girardi would rather manage.

I didn't know that Grandy and Cano was a package deal...

That's what I'm so excited for! Different clubhouse. Different philosophy. Very exciting
I wanted both but if I had to pick it would be Cano. Ellsbury career on base .352 Cano .383. I believe Cano has a better batting average too. And a lot more power
What do you do with Gardner now?
Cano gets on base but pull happy hitters like Tex and Granderson leave him stranded

How much of an advantage did Cano have as a lefty in Yankees Stadium though? Ellsbury hits to right field a lot - I think that might make up for the difference of 3 times on base per 100 plate appearances.
Maybe he had hit close to 20 but outside of th fluke year he's a 10 HR guy in Boston. He played half his games on the road. They are different players who add different dimensions offensively. I don't think you can lump Cano in with Tex and granderson. Unlike those guys sign terrible averages with runners in base Cano he gets hits with runner on base against good pitchers. Those guys fatten up their stats playing against the Twins of the world
I think they're looking at the advanced stats. Due to excellent defense, a lot of steals, and a good (2013) to great (2011) OPS, Ellsbury's WAR has been excellent in 2 of the last 3 years. And I think they expect to be even better with the short porch in right field. His WAR has been quite good in 4 of the past 6 years, and I think they think the other two years were fluke injuries. I'm not saying I'd have made the same decision - I'd have gone harder after Cano - but I can understand what they were thinking. Once it looked hopeless with Cano, I'd probably have gone after whichever would have taken the smaller contract between Soo Choo and Ellsbury.
Yea I think they are going for a more metric approach . I have no problem with that. I've wanted that for years over these guys who pile up 40 home runs facing terrible Regular season AL pitching. Then face good playoff pitchers and can't get a key hit with runners on base. Are the Yankees finished because they lost Cano? Absolutely not but it sucks to lose a home grown Yankee. Your best player. Pretty soon every yankee with the exception of A couple pitchers will have been bought
Eh, that doesn't bother me as much as it bothers many people. I just to win. Don't forget Soriano's home-grown technically though.
I just think it's crazy that the Yankees lost a great player to free agency. When was the last time that happened?
I could careless about guys like granderson, texeira and swisher but Cano don't you know DAMN
Yeah, I think it's also crazy that $175 mil wasn't enough to make Cano happy in life but I know that's not how pro athletes think.
It was Jay Z's first big splash. Anything less his credibility would've been shot. At least no one gave him $310mil. Cano was sold on becoming a global star. Good luck with that in Seattle. Only 5% of their population is Hispanic

yep, not a fan of losing home grown players..
At the same time guys, don't forget he left. The yanks didn't offer the 10 years so he signed elsewhere..... so Cano left the Yankees. That should be the end of that. You can't fault the yanks. They did not want to give him 10 years. That should be enough to just except that and move on.
Yankees will win it all very soon without Cano
