One More Thing

bernard - any complaint of players feeling entitled is diffused by the head coach making all players earn minutes with dependable play, the dedication to improve and professionalism.

Minutes are not guaranteed.

This should have been enough to bench him permanently.

And here’s the thing: before Tuesday’s game against Detroit, Smith arrived early at the Garden and met with Woodson and team president Steve Mills. Even Smith’s dad, Earl, was in the locker room. One person close to the team described it as an intervention. A few hours later, Smith’s joke went over as well in the league office as Dennis Rodman’s trip to North Korea.

This is actually false.JR contract had nothing to do with being able to pay anyone else.

JR Smith needs to man up, apologize, make changes, and then just move on
He clearly isn't the same player he was last season (physically or mentally)
I don't know how much is from his knee procedure and lack of speed/explosiveness/athleticism and/or pain, or if it just a lack of heart from a contract he can sleep on for another 2-3 years till he "regains" his focus

Physical talent can only take you so far and in a couple years, his physical decline will begin, and whether he can still be a NBA rotational player would all depend on his mental and off the court abilities (in training, film, IQ, and out smarting his opponents)

RonRon - this one is for you.

"Perhaps his greatest excess of idiocy had been a weekend of running a room service bill into the proximity of $3,000, a source with direct knowledge told Yahoo Sports. (JRSmith) kept ordering food, stacking piles of trays upon trays – "just to see if they would keep bringing it to the room," the source said.

All uneaten, all on the franchise's tab – all a window into a fool."

I don't hate JR but he's pissed me off this season. He hasn't been even remotely locked in the past few weeks. I'll be honest, I chuckled every time the camera showed him glued to the bench last night- serves him right. Unfortunately, judging by his comments, he still doesn't get it. He thinks Woody should have come and explained it to him?! Whats left to explain- he's given JR more chances than any other coach in the nab would and he just not seem to appreciate or get it.
nixluva @ 1/10/2014 2:45 PM
I have 2 sons and one of my biggest fears was one of them turning out like JR. When I had instances of them acting up I was quick to address it and get them straightened out. Still if you have a child that is determined to do what he wants there's nothing a parent can do. I tried to appeal to their sense of reason, respect for their Mom and relatives. I used examples of other family members and friends who made mistakes and had really bad results and consequences. Most of all I made sure to use punishments that would restrict them from doing things they wanted to do if they did the wrong things. I think it was the only way to make them understand the seriousness of making bad choices. Both of my sons have become well balanced young men and I am proud of them. I can only imagine how tough it is for JR's dad.

This is something Woody should've done from day one. He talked a good game about Accountability, but he never really applied it to JR. This I couldn't ever understand. It's like he had a blind spot for JR or something. That's bad coaching (parenting)! You can't have different rules like that. JR was allowed to get away with just about anything and faced no real consequences. Maybe now we've reached a new day and can finally move forward the right way.

No that’s politics.....And that’s why it's hard to find a Knick coach. Of course JR was given special privileges.....along with Chris Smith, Papa Smith, and the entire Smith family. At the time, JR signed a contract that was below his market value. I'm sure Dolan took that into account and gave JR the green light to act a fool. Why you think JR made that tweet after his brother was cut? But I think JR abused that privilege and now his act is wearing thin on Dollan. Don't forget, Woodson is an old school coach, but I'm sure there are certain players that are untouchable (Melo / JR) due to Dollans relations and team politics.

Woodson was accountable when he first took over. As years go by, it he slowly conforms into Dollans puppet, which is why he's still the coach. Woody isn't stupid....he's just trying to feed his family. Why you think Dollan didn't try to bring Phil Jackson on board? Because Phil is not a puppet, at this stage in his coaching career. He want’s full control. I wouldn't put all of this accountability stuff on Woodson. If anything true about this man, is his accountability and old school (Larry Brown) type of discipline with players.

I also have two sons.....I use a military style of dicipline with them.....I don't fear them being JR at all, because there are no JR's in my house. We are creatures of habbit. It takes time to be a knuckle head like that, and my boys will have years of proper structure and dicipline, without forcing them into adult hood too early. Allow them to be kids, so that they don't feel like they missed out as an adult...trying to catchup on kids stuff like untieing shoes (which I think was pretty funny when it was done the first time!) After that, it becomes annoying....

smackeddog @ 1/10/2014 4:14 PM
I don't have any kids, but I wouldn't live in fear of them turning out like JR. The millions of dollars would be useful! He's immature, he smokes weed and he unties people's shoe laces. He likes to party. I don't really see why that makes him a monster. Basketball wise, I can't stand him at the moment.

Nixluva - how in hell do you know what Mike Woodson has done away from the cameras?

The fact is, other than third hand reports, you don't have a wiretap, or reliable view, for any player-coach interaction. None. So how can you assume what the dialogue has been?

Your assumptions only speak to your D'Antoni-centric aganda

so we now can add SPITEFUL on to

immature
out of control

lack of IQ
lack of discipline/respect

in the end, he was a very talented young kid at one time, coming out of HIGH school to play in the NBA

It's overblown if Felton or STAT did it, but it makes headlines when JR does it because of the mountain of other issues he's had.

I'd agree except what he's doing is dangerous to others. That's why it's so serious.

Vmart @ 1/11/2014 11:34 AM
Looks like it was Dolan's decision to bench Smith. I don't think Woody has it in him to bench Smith so Dolan made the decision for him. Good move by Dolan. Now don't listen to Melo because the Knicks don't need JR.

I think it's only serious because of the situation surrounding his fine. Getting warned by the NBA and then doing it again shows his lack of respect for the league. Add to that what holfresh said (his actions throughout the summer and into the season) and the shoelace incident just calls for something to be done. It's funny because that's actually the most harmless thing he's done when you put it with everything else.

Maybe because he has eyes? Woodson didn't bench him before this happened - even with all the other things he did that could have called for it. Had Woodson benched him before, we would have see it.

Is everything Nix says nullified because he defended D'antoni?
