Knicks · Will Phil Coach The Knicks Via Proxy? (page 1)

misterearl @ 5/1/2014 4:44 PM
Otherwise, why all the chatter surrounding Steve Kerr? Kerr has no coaching experience and it is difficult to imagine how he will garner immediate respect in the locker room. Certainly, the broadcasting credential is in place. His general manager background is there... and he has never coached.

If you are a veteran pro player, other than Phil having his back, what earns Steve Kerr respect?

Can Kerr, alone, impose his will on the players?

Nalod @ 5/1/2014 4:49 PM

Wanna see his rings? one for each finger.

Dude played.

Dude GM'd

Dude will have to earn his stripes like any other new coach to a locker room.

misterearl @ 5/1/2014 4:59 PM
Nalod - does dude command respect as an imposing voice?

Dude played is a weak response. A lot of dudes played. Dude GM'd. Okayfine. (sarcasm alert) That got my attention.

Of course Kerr will need to earn his stripes. Why start with a person who has no experience in New York, and no experience as a coach at any level?

Hard to swallow that post after Marc Jackson offers from you

misterearl @ 5/1/2014 5:01 PM
martin - Mark Jackson is intimately familiar with New York City. He also understands the Knicks culture.

I stand by that point of difference.

Big difference in demeanor.

Kerr understands the culture of winning? How many rings Jackson got?

martin @ 5/1/2014 5:03 PM
I used to be big time in the boat of new nba coaches having full time coaching experience - nba assistants, DLeague, Euro, whatever - I have soften that approach over the past years.
nixluva @ 5/1/2014 5:10 PM
Phil, Kerr and all the other winning former assistants n players that will be added will change the Knicks culture. The new culture will be the same winning culture Phil has established before. Kerr knows this culture plus the Spurs culture so why wouldn't he be a good man to lead this team?

martin - Steve Kerr is an unknown as coach. He could become a master motivator, a and a brilliant tactician. He could devise strategies that force opponents scramble to match his gamesmanship.

Simply trying to put myself in the uniform of a player in the New York pressure cooker. Not simply as a fan.

I want the Knicks to get this transition right the first time. My spider sense is tingling. Or maybe I'm just hungry.

mreinman @ 5/1/2014 5:18 PM
There are so many first time coaches that have been successful recently.

Hornacek, Kidd, Joerger, Clifford, Budenholzer

I would rather not have a retread.

Who would you like to see the knicks hire?

misterearl @ 5/1/2014 5:37 PM
A Good Retread

mreinman - the coaches you listed are in markets that are nothing like New York. The ideal Knicks coach would be Tom Thibodeau. His defense plus Phil's offense would be magical. He has been on the New York sideline. According to reports, the Lakers have already requested permission.

Are we not men?

Thibs knows nothing about the triangle or that type of ball movement offense, what system was he part of that worked on these principles for a number of years?

He is a good coach but I do not think that he fits what phil is looking for. If he was, I am sure that we would have requested permission as well. Phil wants someone that he has already trained and that he can mold as a coach.

Do you not trust uncle phil anymore?

The Answer Man Needs a Vacation

Q. mreinman - Do you not trust uncle phil anymore?

A. With Mike D'Antoni walking the streets, I don't trust anyone until the ink is on the contract.

Knick culture is not hard to comprehend. Impulsive owner, toilets have hidden microphones, and the ending is bad except you are wealthier.

What does MJax know that Kerr does needs to know about being familiar about NYC? How to read a subway map? Best joints for Pastrami? Don't buy loose doobs in Washington Sq park?

Kerr is not even in the picture unless Phil is the big dog and his contract should be tied to Phils. Phil leaves, Kerr has an out. Thats what I'd negotiate.

Knicks culture is about to change. Kerr knows to bow down and kiss clydes wing tips, make sure he knows who dolan is, and find that Horowitz dude who rules the communications. They get private jets, lots of money and chicks are free! Kerr knows what he is walking into. HIs agent is Tannenbaum, the Jets ex GM. He is taking notes. Dude will make NY his biytch.

Gene Shue, Dick Motta, Stan Albeck, Al Bianci and Tom Nissalke all have no treads left!

what's this new york angle you are carping about? i listen to kerr very carefully lately and i hear a man who knows exactly what's going on on the court. aside from that he has several things going for him:

1) he has played for and won with the completely autonomous head of basketball operations for the knicks and will have that power behind him should he be hired. when you are ordered from the top down then command and hierarchy trumps multi-million dollar contracts
2) new york media-- BFD
3) the msg crowd-- BFD
4) a change of culture-- he and jackson will be on the same page, hiring the services of players who are willing to "buy in with all their being" into the culture they want to create and with goal of building a winner
5) practices are held at suny purchase
6) al trautwig, marc moron berman and alan dufus hahn are his main interviewers-- is that an issue for you? see (2)

again what's with the "new york is too tough for kerr to handle" crapola?

who do you want to coach here... answerman?

I have the same concerns too. It would be nice if we grabbed a guy who's spent some time on the bench. I'm not sure if Kerr can impose his will, but I haven't seen enough to say he can't. But who else is available to coach the triangle? My first choice wouldve been Brian Shaw, but he's not available. Derrick Fisher? I have even more questions about him than I do with Kerr. Jim Cleammons? I'm surprised his name hasn't gained much traction. He served as Phil's proxy in LA. Pete Myers? He has years of experience as an assistant coach and he was fiery player. I have 't heard his name mentioned at all. At this point, we have no choice but to trust in Phil.

How could any of us know if "dude" will command respect? One thing we _do_ know for certain is that not me, not you, not anyone on this forum has better insight into the answers to these questions than Phil Jackson. Obviously, he sees or knows something about Kerr that is compelling him to hire the man without even seemingly giving anyone else a chance. Jax was brought in to rearrange this organization top to bottom. Questioning the hire speculating about Kerr's competence to me seems kind've ridiculous because it is complete conjecture.

Every coach at one point was a new hire with no experience. We have to trust Phil to make a good decision. We can speculate later after we see RESULTS whether his moves were good or bad, rash or well thought out and the one thing I know for certain is that I will take PHIL JACKSON hire an inexperienced coach who HE OBVIOUSLY BELIEVES IN FOR SOME REASON WE CANNOT KNOW over DOLAN AND HIS CRONIES HIRING A COACH WHO THEY THINK IS THE RIGHT FIT for the job 1,000,000 times out of 1,000,000 times.

And so what? Was Greg Popovich intimately familiar with San Antonio? Jerry Sloan? Was he a Salt Lake City native? No, none of this is required and if an individual is talented and qualified they can succeed ANYWHERE. OK, this is all ridiculous and over the top I simply don't believe in

Listen, Im a native New Yorker and I love this place. Never lived anywhere else besides the four years I was in college and I don't desire to ever leave. I _do not_ however buy into this mystique that coaching or playing in NYC requires some quasi-mystical ability only garnered by being either from here or by being adopted into the sporting pantheon of NY. That, to me is ridiculous and on par with believing in psychics or ghosts.

Yeah, the media pressure is more intense here. The fans are more intense than some other places. We take this shit seriously here in NY.

Phil Jackson certainly "knows the knicks culture", right? He is "intimately familiar with New York City", right? If he hires Kerr don't you think he thinks Kerr is on the level and can handle it? He obviously believes in Kerr and I stand by my previous statement that Phil knows Kerr better than any of us.

One chant of "is Brooklyn in da house" (point at Brooklyn accross his chest) should seal the deal for Kerr!
