Knicks · Steve Kerr smeve perr (page 1)

Who cares

Is Melo staying and what is the plan--everything else is irrelevant.

Vmart @ 5/13/2014 10:26 AM
My gut feeling is Melo leaves. That is why Kerr wants stupid money to coach the Knicks. If your going to join a crappy team might as well get paid well to be a loser coach.
djsunyc @ 5/13/2014 10:28 AM
coach is very relevant imho. look at kidd with the nets.

ok, knicks re-sign melo and get kerr. then they end up with love or whomever you want to say. then they don't win a title b/c kerr is just not experienced enough to get it done. you just wasted a year of melo's prime with love (not to mention a wasted year next season as well). if the knicks are serious about contending, then you either hire a big name guy now or a 1 year stop gap.

phil wants his triangle and everyone else be damned. problem is that phil is not the coach.

gunsnewing @ 5/13/2014 10:30 AM
Some would argue this is a better team without Melo depending on what we get back for him
gunsnewing @ 5/13/2014 10:32 AM
It doesn't matter who the coach is as long as he is in line with Phil's principles and can be molded

I don't see how we have the assets to contend next season on paper.

Im not sure the nets down 1-3 is not more of Heat playing great than Nets fail? Sure we can point to KG losing steam and Deron not playiong to his contract but they seem to be playing well but then the heat defense puts the clamp down and its done.

Melo to come back has to see a clear path of contention in the near future. He can go to Rockets or Bulls but it will still cost them depth given cap considerations. Dwight-Melo-Harden really play championship defense together? Noah-Rose-Melo under Thibs could be coached into it, but Noah seems to crawl to the end of the season and just had some surgery (should be fine next year), Rose is an unkown commodity after two years off, and Melo is an offensive workhorse but also wears down. He needs to get less minutes and not carry a team. Sound like Houstan is a good fit but what has to get moved for that to happen? What does their offensive sets look like with Harden/Melo? Parsons might have to get moved to make it happen, as likely Asik and Lin. What does the rest of the back court look like?

Heat are about Lebron. Enjoy the show. The best of his generation took apart the nets last nite.

Whether one likes or dislikes Melo its certain him walking with us getting nothing in return would certainly not leave us better off considering we gave up a good amount of assets for him in the trade. Hopefully if he walks we can work a sign and trade of some sort to recoup some value.

If Melo walks I personally have no problem with tanking next season for a high pick in 2015. We'd have a top pick plus double max cap space that year. Giddy up. I actually hope this is what happens at this point. Im not a Melo hater but Im also not a huge Melo fan either. Id rather not be paying near max money for him especially at 30 years old and for 5 years. If he takes $15 to $17 million, maybe, but otherwise Id rather have that top pick and room for two younger max FA's in 2015 and beyond.

i think he is going to leave and never mind that he will always be known for ruining a team in the process of rebuilding, jerking it into win-now status, and then abandoning ship.

a sign and trade would help his legacy as a knick but history will not be kind to him. hubris will always get the better of him.

Kerr is not a coach, he is an intern and has no aspirations to coach long term. Get into the f*&^%ng truck. I would much rather look at Derek Fisher if I go down the triangle road. Knicks should be talking to Stan, this is bullshit.

Why Derek Fisher over Kerr?

Do we know just becuase he played in the triangle he'd coach it? Wants to be a coach?

I'm 100% convinced Kerr is coaching the Knicks but Fisher would be the fall back guy. Read Durants comments about his leadership.

Again no prior coaching experience which is perfect for what Phil wants to do which is mold one of his guys to teach the "maligned" triangle.

Fisher played a huge role for Phil in LA. Probably bigger than he role Kerr played on the bulls

Also it's been long rumored than fisher will get into coaching and be a good one

Rookie @ 5/13/2014 1:49 PM
Also to add to what Guns just said, Fisher is 39 and wants to be a coach. I think this is the right age and approach. Kerr is 48 and has not coached since he left the league. He has done everything else except coach....so why now? I doubt his commitment to the job. I want a coach who wants to be the best coach in the league. Not a guy who wants to coach for 5 years then do something else.
gunsnewing @ 5/13/2014 1:57 PM
I'm not crazy about guys going straight from the bench to the court. We am saw what happened to the nets and Kidd and Frank. Rather have the guy who's worked as an assistant, GM or even commentator
Rookie @ 5/13/2014 2:03 PM
My first choice would be a bona fide top notch coach, not a beginner for a team that is looking to contend. Either it's a rebuild or it isn't. If Kerr is the coach, I'm guessing we are going for a quik rebuild*cough*. Suck for 1 year then sign a new crop of FA's. My guess is Melo is gone, we move Chandler and start rebuilding this year under Kerr. One thing I am certain of is that with Phil at the helm, ther is definitely a plan.
Nalod @ 5/13/2014 2:05 PM
Kevin Garnett then for that matter!!!
gunsnewing @ 5/13/2014 2:08 PM
KG has yet to express a desire to coach

What brought this on? I think the media is getting to some Knicks fans. They're plkaying this up to make as much of it as possible and in a sense kind of delegitimatize Kerr. Make him seem greedy and out of touch or that we'll be paying too much for him. Whatever the angle it's about bashing the Knicks via their coaching search. They can't really knock Phil per se, but going after Kerr and the process of landing him is ripe for all kind of speculation.

I'm at peace for the 1st time in a while. Like Phil said. If Melo re-signs great. If he doesn't GREAT. They still move on with changing the foundation of this team and building a winner. It just changes the starting point, but you still have a plan and philosophy to follow which is above any one player. You can plug any star player into the core philosophy and it works. It's not Melo or bust.

So the reason Kerr matters is in relation to Phil's plan to have a cohesive management team. Now he could do the same with Fisher IMO, but Kerr is at the top of his list. NO WORRIES!!! This is how you want to build a team. Have a man with the plan at the top and capable men underneath to execute the plan.

y2zipper @ 5/13/2014 4:00 PM
We know the plan. Phil is going to hire a guy off his coaching tree to mentor and groom, and the team is going to try and convince Melo to stay. If Melo stays, they'll make small one-year moves to contend again like last year and wait for the 2015 cap space. If Melo leaves, it's tank city for the year.

Also, pretty sure Kobe calls Fisher his favorite teammate. I think Fisher is coaching next year if he wants to and he might be better than Kerr. Phil wants Steve for some reason. They years and money don't make sense though. Also, if you are taking on the job it seems like you would want to be available to scout this week.

Not sure what is happening but he is in the gym training again. Hard to call him 'fat' when he isn't wearing his body armour.

I don't think we'll be that bad if Melo leaves- I'm not discounting him at all - but I think with healthy Amar'e, better system day one and some tweaks- we have a 35+/- win team.

Which either gets us to the 8th seed, or just to the back of the lottery
