Knicks · Would you pay Melo the max he could get if that's what it took to bring him back. (page 1)

you have a choice either pay him or see the post Ewing era over again. Even the great Phil Jackson can't save us. Even though I believe Melo will take less money. New York however is a strange impatient town when it comes to the Knicks.if LeBron played for us and he had a bad year we would be willing to throw him under the bus. Thats just how we are.

If he stays or go. I want the best deal possible for the Knicks. I hope that Phil Jackson is very quite about what he want to do. Don't upset Anthony lets just play the game and if he leaves he will be good enough to help us get some draft picks and a real good player for him.

we had the post ewing era last year when he was here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Melonoma @ 6/28/2014 1:59 PM
Yeah, they have to do it. And I am no fan of Melo as a "superstar" (see my user name.) Without Melo, they're not getting another star in 2015. You can't win without stars in this league. I'm all for "building a team the right way", but we're out of draft picks and we have no emerging young stars.

How much cap space would it leave us in 2015 if Melo re-signs? If it's enough for another max player, you re-sign Anthony at whatever price it takes.

However, I WILL be very angry if Melo doesn't leave money on the table. I'll be pretty damn angry.

With the worst supporting cast out of any superstar in the NBA. Just getting an NBA-caliber PG makes this team a ton better. With Calderon we're a playoff team last year. And if Jackson can somehow land Gasol or make another couple of moves, this could actually turn out to be a halfway decent roster.

I'm NOT saying Melo is the guy who's going to lead us to the promised land. He's not. But I'll live with one year of him being the best player on this team if it means we get a big time star in 2015.

Don't try it The post Ewing era lasted over 10 years of hell. So just stop there we had one the one bad year and that was not the Post Melo era. Remember he may come back.

tj23 @ 6/28/2014 2:11 PM
I'd rather give him the max, we probably go a tad above .500 in my estimate. We'd still have tons of cap room but obviously not as much for next year. As opposed to watching this team struggle to win 25 games, get blown out several times, and have little reason to attract any great players here in the near future. Ideally, we sign him for less, but if push comes to shove, give him the max. Personally, I don't think it matters. He's gone. I don't care how confident they are that he will stay. It just doesn't add up.

what do you call 37-45 then? whatever it is, it wasn't good, so trying to justify giving him the max is ridiculous in this case...

StarksEwing1 @ 6/28/2014 2:42 PM
I wouldnt. Look the guy is a great scorer we all know that but the other parts of the game he has flaws in plus he is in his 30's now which makes injury/breaking down more realistic. 5 years 129 million is too much and i doubt Phil would wnat to do that

or the knicks overachieve or exceed expectations. i think that's the point of "building." shame you are not optimistic about a future without this guy here.

if he stays? lets just say that i will be increasingly shocked and dismayed the more this guy gets paid over his actual value which is 14 million maximum. of course nobody should be happy in a compromise.

14 million and that's it!

Its not like melo has had a stellar playoff record either so there's that. I dont mind he coming back but he needs to take a significant paycut. Even 16-18 million per year is fair IMO

no no no no no

that's five "no"s.

with a player of his caliber, a second-and-a half option, not a second-- not a third-- but somewhere in between, you don't pay him a penny more than 14 million. come on!

No it wasn't good. But I've seen much worse knick teams. We all have. Now maybe for some people any team that doesn't even make the playoffs are all the same, but this team wasn't nearly as bad as some of those D'Antoni/Isiah/Larry Brown squads. Just saying. There is a difference, even if it seems insignificant.

until carmelo came here dantoni's team was trying to win, they actually liked each other and the real problem was either lack of talent or too young at the time...

last years team was a total mess, top to bottom..

Guys like brown and Dantoni were never really given what they wanted or needed completely.. carmelo was given his coach, players, and heck the power to run popular asian players out of NY.. and for all that was given to him, we were horrible...

NYStateOfMind @ 6/29/2014 1:43 PM
No way in hell do you max Melo out. He had his best year last year, but the past 2 seasons have had shoulder concerns and no real ring potential. Kobe, MJ, and now LBJ can demand max contracts, they have the hardware to back it up. Melo does not. He needs to mirror LBJ, sacrifice to win, then he can make demands.

This I want to boost my ego tour is sad. Without the tour he knows several top teams want him, so this is all about feeling like LBJ and his big ego. The Knicks aren't asking him to do anything the other contenders aren't asking. They all want him to take a discount to win. Melo was the first one to talk discount. Melo has enough money. He can be a punk and join the Heat. He can give NY the biggest slap in the face ever and leave for nothing, when he demanded we pay up for him to the Nuggets. But, at least LBJ wouldn't be the most hated player in the NBA and NY anymore.

The Spurs don't have a superstar, they have a team with several stars. Ask yourself, which Spurs player would you start a new franchise with today moving forward? How many superstars are there in the league anyway? LBJ, KD, Griffin, Paul, Curry, & Kobe, then you hit the maybe superstars for some but probably just stars, Westbrook, Harden, Melo, Howard, Aldridge, George, Dirk, Duncan, Randolph, Davis, and Love off the top of my mind. With just that list, that is 17 Superstars to stars in the whole 30 team league, some on the same team.

Sure you can win with Superstars, but you can also win with a great deep team, the right coach, and a franchise philosophy of winning/teamwork/sacrifice.

jazz74 @ 6/29/2014 4:00 PM
I vote yes. melo has obvious flaws but he is still a top 20 player and maybe in this system top 5. I like the dallas/sixers circa '01 model of building around him but you will need one good player to facilitate with him which I think could be accomplished soon. I HATED the post ewing era because we just made bad decision and more importantly awful luck. we can look towards 2015 but with our unlucky record we could be stuck holding the bag of money with no one coming. get an established star. you don't let them walk away and build around them.
Bonn1997 @ 6/29/2014 4:13 PM
Why would you make a top 20 player the highest paid player in the game? Doesn't that strike you as a bad use of limited cap space?
NardDogNation @ 6/29/2014 4:53 PM
I wouldn't pay him the max but I'd give him a 5th year to ensure he'd make up what he lost in the 4 years and to best other team's offers.
blkexec @ 6/29/2014 5:00 PM
Max or Walk Out......Both options will hurt the franchise.

Locking Melo up to a longterm contract, below max value (aka Tim Duncan and co) is the best move. Phil and even Melo knows that. I doubt anybody will give Melo a max contract. I could see if he actually made his teammates better, and helped us get into the playoffs, in the east when it was probably the easiest time to get him, will all the bad teams.

No Max....

Also, we don't need Melo to attract stars. And personally, I think Lebron is the only star he attracts. Melo is the type to attract role players like Chandler....Players that don't need the ball, like Philly's team when AI was the star.

Phil, Fisher and NYC will attract starts just fine. We already saw what a Max Melo will do for us last season.....
