Knicks · Great article by Simmons about Melo, balanced view (page 4)

I think that Lebron, Wade and Bosh took 15 million less over 6 years but they all opted out.

I think Melo would take that hit if there was a super friends option.

I don't think that any sane minded person would think that is not the case.

My point, exactly. If Melo was a FA summer of '10, I'm sure he would have replaced Bosh and signed the same contract....

I have been pretty harsh on him but of course he would have.

What about this year? Why did Lebron leave max money on the table from Miami? There's more to life than money especially when you make in the hundreds of millions

You really can't compare anyone to Lebron. He will be a billionaire like Jordan. This is all peanuts to him.

This is not the case for all the other players.

Yes Lebron doesn't care about money so much so he opted out because he wanted the max. Then signed a max deal in Cleveland for only 2yrs because he knows the cap will explode and he can sign for an even larger Max deal. There is nothing wrong with that at all.

I have no clue what players want to do outside of the basketball. How big their family is and who they support. What they get paid is up to them. If teams do not want to be so restricted then don't put a cap on things and fight it out like billionaires.

Was just about to post that. Agreed there's nothing wrong with it except if Melo were to do it. That's what's quickly becoming apparent.

You really can't just look at the totals and ignore what his actual Net would be after all that. I could care less what he makes. I'm glad Melo is still here and that we have a chance to win with better leadership going forward.

Nixluva you are one of my favorite posters on here because of your bb knowledge, but I think we both know this is nonsense.

Its fine to stop talking about his salary, but let's not pretend he threw himself on the sword with this deal.

Yep he didn't. Even when I saw how may of a "cut" he took I had to roll my eyes but if Phil was ok giving him that money then I'm not gonna complain.

This doesn't make sense, you understand LBJ took a 2 year Max deal....or do you think Max money is just a number or year amount???

James is structuring the deal this way to give him maximum flexibility for a number of different scenarios. Most notably, the new television deal in 2016 is expected to kick the salary cap up to $80 million, $17 million higher than it was this year. A max contract is a portion of the cap, so James can sign a bigger deal than he'd lock himself into now if he signed for multiple years. James also can become a free agent before the league's labor contract expires in 2017. And, of course, James also keeps his options open should the situation with Cleveland go haywire.

It's rare to see a star do this because of the risk of injury, but James can do so because of his earnings off the court.

People are also speculating that he will continue to take 2 year(2nd yr option) deals to continually get an higher max deal.

Melo is not paying money to himself.
He get offers and he took one he likes.
If this will be a problem it will be Knicks problem not Melo.
Melo is set for life this way or another.
And titles are just a side business.
It is all about money from both sides.
It is not too much diff 24 or 25 mils per... or even 22...
And Zen knows this.

So there is an article about Melo covering good and bad. Realgm rejects focus entire thread of the negative and it's four pages of these guys singing Melo isn't dirk. Riveting stuff. Someone somewhere said Melo stinks and the jihad duo yells hallelujah!! Can I get an amen????

We will find out in the next four years or so what Melo is or isn't. He's in a great position to succeed. Hopefully Phil can add the talent. Time will tell. Rooting for this group to succeed will be fun. Knowing there are internet donkees out there who would love to see Melo fail and bring down Phil and in turn see the Knicks fail will get me that much more into it.

There's a 1000 reasons to be excited about this season. Least of which is keeping the elite scorer. These guys can't let it go. Two parts funny, forty parts pathetic.

VDesai @ 7/15/2014 11:06 PM
Good article that makes a lot of great points but misses one key point. We get to see Melo in a completely different system. The triangle, if we institute it properly, will eliminate ISO ball till the clock winds down or superstar take over is needed. This will allow Melo to play a more efficient game instead of playing team rescue ISO ball from the first 2nd of the shot clock. We were without an effective offensive system last year. Part of it was do to shitty PG play, another part due to moving away from some of the D'Antoni tactics that were left over from the year before.

Although he correctly pointed out carmelo needs a 2011 mavs type of team, dirk was just a better player than carmelo and even that team came together under all the right circumstances...

If his only hope is getting that type of team, then he is chasing a unicorn... going with the bulls made so much sense.. but carmelo is looking for money.. not rings it seems..

You're making valid points here, but I think it's still possible for Phil to be successful in putting together a team that can perform at a high level with the 2011 Mavs type of team. It's not just about the players but also the way the team plays. This team is going to be playing a very team oriented style of ball and we have some good role players that should excel in that style of play. Then it's up to Melo to do his part in that system. I think it can work.

We've never seen Melo play in such a refined system as this. It could add a very nice boost to his performance and his teammates. Just seeing the Kid Knicks quickly applying the principles gives hope.

here is the problem with that. carmelo already had chandler and I don't agree with simmons on a past peak chandler because he won DPOY while he was hear, he was still playing at a very high level... but getting back to the point... how do you really put a team like that together? marion is a unique player and was past his prime? Terry was on the downside of his career a bit... I mean you really don't try to put that type of team together.. now when they first were put together it was a good mix.. a good mix that happened to put it all together right at the end.. remember, kidd played well but was truly towards the end of his career... again, how do you go about replicating such a team..

I think what it highlights is how hard it is going to be to build a winner around carmelo.... the bulls was his best chance or best fit...

nixluva, the triangle isn't some magic elixir... carmelo's troubles extend beyond not playing in the triangle... Its nice to see the kids playing well, as it is easier to mold young minds... but again it is just summer league as well..

That team had a lot of good players on it and was filled with depth. Not sure how the Knicks are going to be able to build that team with this CBA.
nixluva @ 7/16/2014 12:41 AM
Last time this team had a good vet PG, adequate shooting, good group of bigs and a system that created good spacing and ball movement we won 54 games. I think this team could have another really strong season this year. If they win 46-50 games they can win the Atlantic and that would be huge for this team. I don't believe this team is as bad as many fans and the media think. I think they needed good coaching and a real plan for success. They needed a culture change to be more unselfish and play as a team. When Melo has help it makes a huge difference.

Not only do I think Melo could be better than he's ever been but that goes for the rest of the roster too. They just need to all buy in. It may take time to get everyone comfortable in the Triangle but if they do get the hang of it, this system could really help everyone on this team to be more efficient. This system hides our flaws and enhances the strengths we do have. Since it's not reliant on PG creating or for that matter anyone forcing shots it hides our lack of shot creators. We do have shooters and finishers who can excel in this system of ball and player movement rather than pounding the ball on ISO moves.
