Knicks · Slim Melo? Melo Lite? (page 1)

It looks like someone has been working hard this off season and trimming down. The picture looks a bit stretched to me but still he does look much more fit.

NYKBocker @ 8/11/2014 2:17 PM
pic don't look right
dk7th @ 8/11/2014 2:18 PM
this is a very good sign... but all it proves is that he hasn't been in supreme shape since he got here, just like i have been saying all along. maybe we will finally see an elite-conditioned max melo on this team. he owes the knicks at least that much.
NardDogNation @ 8/11/2014 2:19 PM
Him slimming down might be counterproductive. So much of his game involves brute strength, so I don't see how losing weight helps him overall. It might help a bit with injuries but he could just as easily focus on strengthening his joints/core to do just that.
nixluva @ 8/11/2014 2:20 PM
This was posted on his Instagram. I guess he took Phil's directive to the team, that everyone come back in top shape, to heart. A camera lens can distort someones features tho normally it makes you look fatter than normal. He looks good regardless. Hope it prolongs his career and makes him more explosive. My guess is that Phil told him he was going back to playing the 3 and he needed to be quicker rather than bigger and stronger.

Still got that baby fat stomach. And what's up with all that wrapping on his left knee? That can't be good.

Hope there isn't another secret surgery, that no one knows about.

Getting lighter doesn't mean you'll be weaker. Often you might be carrying extra water and fat which doesn't really add to your strength as much as just make you heavier if you lean on someone. I don't think his game is going to be so much about powering thru guys all the time. Remember that in the Triangle Melo will most likely play in the Pinch Post which is a two man game where moving is very important. He'll also likely come off screens and catch and shoot. I think Phil wants him in that Jordan/Kobe role which is more like Olympic Melo than ISO Melo.

Vmart @ 8/11/2014 2:24 PM
This is a new trend LeBron lost 10 pounds by cutting carbs.
Rookie @ 8/11/2014 2:25 PM
Good sign, always thought Melo's lapses on defense were due to conditioning. Also a sign that he will play most of his minutes at the 3.

brute strength? not any more in the triangle. he will be doing more moving and cutting without the ball, probably be running an extra half mile every game. the "bully ball" game of his has always been counterproductive because he never learned to incorporate head and ball fakes, let alone improve his footwork. he has always been 15 pounds too heavy. this is a good look for him unless the photo has been doctored.

It's hard to get rid of that last bit of fat around the waist. It's where men are most prone to hold fat and the body is REALLY stubborn to let that go. We don't want him to starve just to improve his six pack. That little bit of fat is really nothing. If he comes to camp with that little bit left he'll likely burn it off over the season.

His Knees being wrapped doesn't have to be anything other than maybe some ice packs or other preventative measure to help the knee after a workout. I wouldn't worry about that really. What BB player doesn't really put some kind of wrap on the knees after a workout besides Prigs?

Nalod @ 8/11/2014 2:29 PM
When has he been "Fat"?

He has been seen wearing some form of underarmer padding but when is this guy actually fat and out of shape?

mreinman @ 8/11/2014 2:30 PM
uh oh ...

kneegate

Yeah Phil wants Melo in that attack mode on the move. Being lighter and quicker would only help him to be that scorer. Phil commented on how he saw Melo play in the Olympics so Olympic Melo is what we're likely to be seeing from now on. Less abuse on his body and more efficient part of Melo's game.

He's never been fat, but in that pick he is looking slim.

If he can slim down and keep up with SF's it will put the rest the notion that he is a PF. He will also prolong his career. I hope he comes into camp looking slim and toned like in that pick. It's what $124m athletes should look like every year

And he might be able to finish games and not be winded in 4th quarters

yeah - maybe he can play 48 minutes a game this year since his minutes last year were not good enough.

These guys usually ice their knees when they've gone a long time being off the court. At least I hope that's all it is. You never know with the minutes he's logged especially for Woodhead
