dont have to have knee problems to ice after every workout... its pretty much protocol

Phil definitely wants to see more of that Olympic Melo. Melo on the move is much harder to stop than when he's coming off screens and getting some catch and shoot plays. As Clyde and others would often say when Melo goes quick he's a better player.
“He’s remarkable in that. He showed in the last Olympics, coming off the bench, playing a role as a bench player on a magnificent team that won a gold medal, that he can play a role if he has to play a role. I think he is a basketball player and I think that’s what players want to do. They want to be able to cut, to pass, to get in different spots on the floor to play or attack. I think Carmelo will be just fine. I see no problem in it.”

Not really- Lebron has lost weight this offseason, does that mean he hasn't been in supreme weight last season? Melo was plump when he was traded here, but each season he seems to have lost weight- last season he was noticeably trimmer and in good shape

Players seem to ice everything these days as a precaution- I remember an article on Prigs saying that he was the only one who doesn't believe in icing and thinks thats why he's been so durable (along with diet)

Prigs is so slim and so conservative in his movements that I doubt he's putting much stress on his joints. He's not running hard or jumping. He's slide stepping and jogging most of the time. A big guy like Melo is likely putting much more stress on his knees. Who knows if the icing actually helps at all. It's a common suggestion if you want to bring down inflammation or swelling so I guess it can't hurt.

He has been seen wearing some form of underarmer padding but when is this guy actually fat and out of shape?
He hasn't. Clyde said that Melo has been supremely fit for the last two years and other pictures have been posted of him without the body armour showing he wasn't fat. He definitely looks like he is prepping to play the 3.

brute strength? not any more in the triangle. he will be doing more moving and cutting without the ball, probably be running an extra half mile every game. the "bully ball" game of his has always been counterproductive because he never learned to incorporate head and ball fakes, let alone improve his footwork. he has always been 15 pounds too heavy. this is a good look for him unless the photo has been doctored.
Yeah Phil wants Melo in that attack mode on the move. Being lighter and quicker would only help him to be that scorer. Phil commented on how he saw Melo play in the Olympics so Olympic Melo is what we're likely to be seeing from now on. Less abuse on his body and more efficient part of Melo's game.
And he might be able to finish games and not be winded in 4th quarters
yeah - maybe he can play 48 minutes a game this year since his minutes last year were not good enough.
Yep. Runner up for most minutes played. He needs to up his minutes so that he can lead the league next year. 18 minutes short of 3000 doesn't cut it. Guy needs to earn his check.

I just hope for and look forward to Melo getting more easy buckets. Everything can't be an MMA match just to put up a shot. Phil's entire approach is to try and make things easier for everyone. Most importantly your star player. Melo seems to have completely focused on what Phil has been telling him about his role from now on. I can only imagine how Phil has been pumping up Melo about how he envisions Melo getting to another level. People need to remember that Phil has done this before.

Getting lighter doesn't mean you'll be weaker. Often you might be carrying extra water and fat which doesn't really add to your strength as much as just make you heavier if you lean on someone. I don't think his game is going to be so much about powering thru guys all the time. Remember that in the Triangle Melo will most likely play in the Pinch Post which is a two man game where moving is very important. He'll also likely come off screens and catch and shoot. I think Phil wants him in that Jordan/Kobe role which is more like Olympic Melo than ISO Melo.
Force is equivalent to mass times acceleration. So if he is losing that mass, he'll have a harder time generating the kind of force he uses to take the contact/clear space and finish. That factor (taking the contact/clearing space) is relevant in the pinch post, as it is at the rim because teams are still trying to double him, IMO.

Him having to single-handedly carry the offensive load for 40mpg had nothing to do with his lapses on defense?

yea.. and the gravity metric was telling also. Nobody was guarded more closely away from the ball last year than Melo. This year should be less work. That alone is promising...

Promising and refreshing. I'm still a bit concerned about his long-term health but the triangle and the weight loss should help to prolong his career. I still think that a 2nd star, more than anything, would accomplish that end, though.

You seem to be assuming that Melo will be scoring with contact at the forefront of his offense and i'm saying that he's going to be moved to scoring more with less contact. This is illustrated a bit in the video below.

He was gassed because not only was he fat and a minutes leader but every play our genius designed was for him to phuck-n-chuck.
