Knicks · MSG on Roku? (page 1)

MaulingandAppalling @ 8/15/2014 9:23 AM
Have any of you gotten MSG on Roku or otherwise without traditional cable? I want to get Clyde's call this season but I'm off cable. Thanks.
Vmart @ 8/15/2014 9:44 AM
If MSG is on Roku I woulda away with Cable.
NYKBocker @ 8/15/2014 10:11 AM
I went half way on cutting my cable. I got rid of my triple play with cablevision. Went double play with Fios just internet and 1 cable box with only preferred channels. The other 2 TVs I put Roku and BluRay player with Netflix on both. Saved a lot of money. Went from $180+ to $85 per month. My kids wont let me cut it all the way. They needed at least 1 TV with Live TV

If you have playon for roku you can usually catch the games. However, it isn't guaranteed and sometimes it is like watching a bad stream on the computer. I use the roku as my backup. Knick games get bumped if they are on when the sabers are on where I am. I usually watch about 15-20 games this way. My advice would be to try watching some sports on playon prior to the season. You can usually get Clyde's call and even the post game

I am pretty sure TKF gets the league pass for roku. If the Knicks aren't blacked out on league pass this might be a good choice. The cost would be more but the quality would be better. Not sure if you get Clyde.

I'm planning on doing the same. Go basic cable and put Roku on the other TVs.

If you have Roku it is worth considering getting Playon for Roku anyway. It has a lot of content that you can stream and is similar to Netflix in quality except that you can pay a one time lifetime fee, pay annually, pay monthly and you used to be able to do a free trial. Playon offers third party user plugins. There are live tv plugins as well as general content plugins. Here are the sport specific ones that you would use to stream Knick games. They are all free and sometimes do not work so I would recommend getting all of them. Also, unlike using these sites on your computer, you won't get a virus through the playon interface. Here are some of the plugins I use: aosotv, Coolsport.tv (I find the stream # for the knick game on their website), VIPBox. There is a plugin for FirstRow Sports that was fantastic but stopped working. Last year I bit the bullet and paid $5.00 to get a plugin called Monstersports. It isn't my go to and requires more searching on the users part but I have always been able to find the game on there if the other sites I use don't have it.

Here is the link to playon's website http://www.playon.tv/ When I got the service msg was blacked out on twc. I was able to get a free trial. I am not sure if they have a free trial anymore. Good luck if you go this route. My advice would be to check it out first to see if it is something you would be happy with. If you do get it you also have access to a lot of other sports/sporting events. Also, check in with TKF about league pass for Roku. I am in upstate NY and the Knicks would be blacked out for me if I went this route.

this made me chuckle and snort

OK it sounds like there are some options but no obvious workaround. I'll see what's out there. I don't mind paying for League Pass, I just don't want to get stuck with garbage announcers, which really just means having to watch the game on mute.
Thanks

You ever though about getting an antenna or your own cable digital turner. HDHomeRun Prime http://www.silicondust.com/products/hdho... will basically cut the cost to rent your cable box. It lets you play everything through Windows media Center, XBox360, or PS3.

I had this for all of last season, worked flawlessly, and they have apps for phones and you can run it through plex for tv. Can't stress enough how great of a deal this site was. No blackouts and you can choose streams from home/away team, so I was able to listen to Clyde all season. Since its just TV signals, they show half time shows and such unlike league pass online which goes into that stupid scoreboard.

Oh also, they show all the bonus stuff like summer league, preseason, and international play. It's a much better value than league pass and they allow you to freeze your account when you cant watch or during offseason stretches. It used to need invite to get a membership there, not sure if it's still the same. Let me know if you do need an invite.

Nice. It says it supports Roku. $89.99 for the season.
mintyfreshness33 @ 8/15/2014 9:16 PM
Yeah everything's at least 720p, never had issues with stream/lag. also note its 89.99 for a year, not a season. I think I bought mine last year around summer league time to watch that, and then froze the account until preseason started.

Thanks for pointing out the year cost.

If you don't mind me asking, what state do you live in? NBA League Pass blacks out local games but the teams themselves get to decide what's local. I do a lot of travel for my job so I bought it but I've worked as far away as State College, PA, which is a good 4-5 hour drive from NYC, and Knicks games were blacked out.

Sounds like this is a great way to watch games. Researching it and found a lot of info on clutchfans. I am not a rockets fan but clutchfans rivals uk as a fan site.

if you want to stream games you need to get sopcast and hit up the wizwig
