Im guessing we will use JR as the starting SG?? and Timmy as 6th man but Id like to see all three avg 30 minutes even if that means moving melo to the 4 at times.

i haven't seen the games but i have read from some here that smith is not really working within the confines of the triangle. wouldn't it be better for the knicks "culture" that fisher bench smith or anybody else for freelancing overmuch?

No one has run the sets perfect. JR is very important--I don't think anyone would disagree. JR has the ability to score 20 points every night and hes more of an all around players than hardaway still.

Smith is free lancing a bit but he also is healthy and scoring when he does so it is a bit of a tough situation. Fisher has been praising Smith and when Smith was asked if he wanted to start he said he would do whatever coach Fisher wanted. Add in that he is healthy and not trying to come off an injury and I think Fisher/Smith make it work. The sixth man role may suit him best.

I didnt think last years team was that bad--it just started off way of course. and we won 54 games the year before that.
I think in our division we are in a 3 team race with NJ and Toronto. NJ needs Lopez and Williams to stay healthy. I think Clev is the elite team but beatable--and we can beat any other team in the east on any given night. So it's all about attitude chemistry and toughness because we have the talent. I believe really good teams have a mind set that they just want to win--it's a pre requisite to a great team. We need the desire to win. That sets teams apart. We need to win our home games and stay .500 or better on the road. We need to compete every game--I dont want to see 38 point losses. If were consistent and Fischer finds the right combinations--this team will be good.

I think the biggest issue is as you said "If were consistent and Fischer finds the right combinations--this team will be good." I think this was a huge issue last year as you just can't roll the ball out and put a lineup out there that has no chemistry or is just a bad fit. From what I see Fish is really trying different lineups and will assess which are the best combo's for this team on both ends. It's not rocket science. You can don't even need advanced stats to see when a group works.
I think this team has plenty of talent and Phil did a nice job of giving Fish enough tools to put together a rotation that can play well on both ends. We all know this team has offensive punch. Even last year they were #11 even with all that dysfunction. They have a chance to be much more efficient this year, but more than that they need to be able to defend and I think Phil has brought in some players that can help in that regard. Not to mention the defensive scheme is much more sound IMO.
For me if we are consistent and fisher finds the right combinations we will be great. I see these Knicks at te end of last year. Not the beginning when we had no center and jr was in a slump.
Dalembart has already show more than capable of replace our center and out pg upgrade is huge.
That alone is 50/50 ball.
From there it's all in the coaching and learning.
I see us going 50/50 until December and putting together wins in the new year.
My take is that if Melo is more efficient in this style that will go a long way towards getting wins early. Also what will be another key is how the team defends as a group. If they can be a respectable defensive team their offensive talent will allow them to win games even if they haven't quite gotten the system down yet. Fish is focussing on the right things. He has given the team a very doable defensive scheme and that should be the key to it all this year. I'm not that worried about this team offensively. We have tons of scoring and will figure it out. I said it already! 17-13. I said I think this team has enough talent to compete for the Atlantic Div. Fish has done good work with the team's D already. So if they can hold their own on D I think they be able to score enough to win games. They won't be perfect early but they can still win games.
Based on 4 games so far, I think this team will be capable of offensive streaks mid-game that build real leads against even the best teams. The real factor for whether they steal those games against top clubs will be how they close out the 4th quarter defensively.
I don't know the answer to that yet, but if the defense firms up further and shows late game tenacity, then the Knicks could beat expectations by playing .500 against most clubs and stealing a few against the top clubs.
Defense will be the deciding factor IMO, not scoring.

looking at the schedule going forward to the remaining games up to 30 and with calderon back giving the knicks a lift, i still see a 6-10 record which means that they end up 10-20. i mean their defense is not going to improve and i saw only a bit more triangle tonight.
does anyone see things differently?

10-20 is totally fair. Expect no more IMO since it could just as easily be 7-23.
Being the only optimist here I hoping that they go 3-27.
This team lacks fallen on the back court, wing, and at center. Acy is an energy guy, but he is not that good of a defender. If we truly want to compete in the east, we have to find another big to replace Bargnani and Cole Aldrich. Those two bigs are occupying spaces and are not giving us jack doodoo.
