Knicks · The guy who makes the most sense in next years FA is Monroe (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 11/5/2014 12:01 AM
He's young he's 6-11 cerebral proven and I think can get better. He's made for this style of play. I would offer him a maximum contract the minute FA started and I would likely also draft big. I think by years end we will have to pony up 6-7mm a year for Shumpert if he keeps it up like this--so draft pick offer Monroe than Gasol and draft pick or two.
If I cant get who I want--I sit on the cash for 2016 signing only 1 year deals again.
Splat @ 11/5/2014 12:46 AM
Guess you didn't hear. We're resigning Amare. He ain't free you know
callmened @ 11/5/2014 1:31 AM
i agree BRIGGS. hes a handful in the post and he has nice moves. intelligent passer (as most GTown centers from the JT3 princeton offense). my only concern is he dogs it alot on defense

i can picture 4 yrs 15 mill

You think he will only command 5mm a year--try max.

callmened @ 11/5/2014 7:59 AM
youre probably right. does monroe make us a contender, nope...but hes a nice young player

He's 23 and should only get better and he's good now for this system.

I think he means $60mil over 4 years. I think your max assessment is the more likely figure.

knickknack @ 11/5/2014 8:55 AM
great pick BRIGGS I endorse this pick over Gasol, Gasol is credited with being a great defender but I don't believe he is. I think he's a long body on a defensive minded team so its hard to look bad on D in that kind of situation. I think its the reverse for Monroe he's been on losing teams who lack defensive tenacity so as a young player who already doesn't lean towards a defensive game its stunted his defensive development. not to mention he doesnt have to be Dwight Howard on defensive for us to succeed he just needs to be able to score on one end and not let his opponent outscore him on the other. the real upside is his intelligence and well developed post game, which is ideal for the triangle.
newyorknewyork @ 11/5/2014 8:59 AM
It will be interesting to see how Phil handles FA. Will he set a price at like 14-15mil a year and stick with it regardless on how much he wants the player. Or will give the FA any amount of money just to land him?

I am hoping the max contract talk wasn't sincere and he was only posturing because he wants to bolt from Detroit. No team was willing to throw that money at him last FA so his market may dictate him taking less.

fishmike @ 11/5/2014 9:06 AM
He's a great passer and he's 25-26 years old. Smart player. I think he's got to be ahead of Gasol because of age.

He's Vlade to me. Great passer. Crafty scorer. Doesnt take bad shots. Not a defensive player but slick, gets some steals. Is pretty strong.

Its also the right time to offer him max because I think that starts at around $14mm and thats not horrible. You figure the year after when the CBA baloons it will look much better.

smackeddog @ 11/5/2014 10:30 AM
I suspect we end up with Monroe- the only thing that puts me off him is his terrible defense. I'm fed up of being a poor defensive team.
smackeddog @ 11/5/2014 10:34 AM

If the Pistons bomb, he could maybe be had in a trade at the deadline- would be nice for us as he'd have a smaller cap hold, making it easier for us to sign another big FA.

Then you're looking at giving up a young asset or a pick for him, something I'm not interested in doing. Rather just sign him outright as a FA and give up nothing. Anyone wanna give up THJ or give up on a Cleanthony Early when we don't even know what Early is yet for this guy right now? That's what Detroit will ask for. Or God forbid another 1st round pick.. Also, I like Monroe but would hate to give him max money -- he just doesn't feel like max player to me -- he's about 16 & 9.5 with no rim protection at 6'11", 24 years old. Nice player, he can score it right around 50% and pass it pretty well but I'd hesitate to give this guy the max. Detroit didn't give him max dollars, right? Nor do they want to. They're still in the driver's seat -- any reasonable offer, they'll match. Anything over the top and they'll let him walk. Wonder what kind of market there will be for him...PHX eventually went back to Eric Bledsoe, came up with a number and got that kid signed. Detroit didn't do that with Monroe...A max offer is what it might take though, esp. if there winds up being some competition for him. And then yeah, does a team featuring Melo and Greg Monroe with some other minor cosmetic changes = a true contender in the East? Probably not, right? A lot to think about here. Throwing a boatload of money at Greg Monroe may not help us all that much..

I'd rather have Gasol. They're both good passers, but Gasol is the better defender and inside presence. Melo is up there in age and the clock is ticking. Monroe would be a nice consolation prize, but we would need to find a backbone defender at center to pair him up with. Maybe we can find that guy with our lottery pick in this year's draft?

In normal circumstances I would agree with you (about not trading an asset for a FA), however as things stand we'll likely either be letting our few assets walk anyways to clear cap space, or will be trading them to clear cap space. So essentially Shump, JR, Larkin, Jason Smith, Cole. By trading them for Monroe (if we were targeting him), then it kills two bird with one stone and actually keeps more cap space available for other FA's (no idea what his cap hold would be, but it would be less than the max). That means we could target another major player. Melo + Monroe isn't much, but Melo + Monroe + another top FA has potential.

Monroe will be looking at the Max- he doesn't deserve it but all salaries are about to hyper inflate due to the upcoming cap boom.

smackeddog @ 11/5/2014 1:49 PM
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if we trade Tim Jr (plus some other stuff) for Greg Monroe- his dad is even a coach on that team.

Monroe is a very good offensive player, but he’s a glaring liability on defense in a league getting smaller and quicker. He’s a turnstile trying to contain the pick-and-roll out on the floor — a mess of bad footwork, poor timing, lazy reaches, and bad choices. When Detroit has him hang back at the foul line, ball handlers can zip around him with an easy crossover or launch wide-open jumpers as Monroe, petrified at giving up a rim run, retreats a step farther than most bigs would dare — often with his arms down. Pistons fans complained, with some justification, about Lawrence Frank’s reluctance to play Monroe and Drummond together for much of last season, but Monroe’s total inability to guard stretchier power forwards factored into that choice — just as it should factor into Detroit’s evaluation of things now.

When the Pistons asked Monroe to attack the ball higher on the floor, the mess was almost worse. Point guards can juke Monroe with laughable ease by faking toward a screener, watching Monroe lurch in that direction, and then crossing over the other way and into an unpatrolled lane. Monroe is often late in jumping out above a screen, meaning his momentum is going too hard the wrong way (toward half court) as the opposing point guard revs up to turn the corner. And when Detroit has asked him to hedge sideways, as in the still below, Monroe often arrives too late to cut off the ball handler

upgrade for the knicks offensively, same or worse defensively, and will probably cost you the max.

I think anyone can play a better style of defense in a team concept. He is 6-11 w long arms. What he brings is for the system style of play. I think we need to sign a big and draft a big--we need 2 as we will be depleted EOY.

Monroe cannot be traded.

He was extended and accepted a qualifying offer and once you do that you cannot be traded.

He was extended a qualifying offer (or whatever its called when a FA accepts a 1 year deal to get to be an unrestricted FA in one years time) and once you accept that offer you cant get dealt.

I seem to remember reading he can be faded, but he has a right of refusal
