Knicks · Can we use the 5 year stretch provision on Calderon? (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 12/22/2014 12:21 PM
If we owe him 14.5--stretch that to 5 that becomes less than 3mm per.

Why? we don't need more cap space- there is a distinct lack of free agents worth signing. By his 3rd year the cap is expanded to we'd have space.

Besides, I still think maybe the Pelicans or Bobcats would be interested in him

If it comes down to it--they can stretch him--hes a candidate. We can get his production from a player making vet minimum salary.

the daily Calderone sucks thread from Briggs
Finestrg @ 12/22/2014 3:44 PM
Good idea. Remind me how that works again: Doesn't it involving waiving the particular player? Can you do it with a player you plan on keeping/utilizing over the set period of time? And does the player need to give his consent to it?

Hey man -- he's right. Calderon seems like a real good guy. Still a halfway decent player in fact, albeit severely limited. But for our purposes of reducing payroll as much as possible in order to retool, his contract is straight up hideous. I know hindsight is always 20/20 but looking back, I can't for the life of me believe Phil thought he was worth taking back in that trade...If Jose qualifies for this stretch provision and we can swing such a move, it might help open up additional possibilities for us. We desperately need a reduced payroll not only to sign FAs but also to take back larger salaries in trades too.

I cant believe folks thought Calderon was gonna be good here...dude has sucked his entire career.

Calderon is euro-type.
His game is based on the system and who he plays with.
Same as Pablo.
This kind of players have no individual value in NBA.
If this team will stick to triangular vision and moving the ball he will be good for us.
PG position is not so important (see Fish himself who knows he suck outside of the system).

He's just not worth the large contract he has. If it comes down to it--we can shrink it if needed.

yellowboy90 @ 12/22/2014 7:39 PM
They'd be better just stretching Jr's contract and revoke Shump's Bird rights.
nixluva @ 12/22/2014 9:27 PM
Calderon isn't the problem. IN this offense we're supposed to get scoring from the other positions. We haven't gotten good production from the SG spot which is a Huge problem. We had 3 talented SG's and none of them stepped up and produced like we needed. Now 2 of them have been out injured and THJ hasn't been hitting as expected. Jose is basically just a little under his normal production but he's been getting better as he rounds into mid season form. He was NEVER supposed to be a source of big offensive production. It's unfortunate that he had the injury and it derailed his season and on top of that we've had so many other issues with players underperforming or health problems. If Phil felt he needed more cap space i'm sure he could make a move but his contract won't be what stops us from signing someone.
Bonn1997 @ 12/23/2014 8:14 AM
Of course he isn't the problem. He's a symptom of the problem: we overpaid for everyone on the roster (except the rookies/min salary guys). Then we have a bad team without any assets

This will be in our best interests. After this year we owe him almost 15mm. If we stretch it we gain 4mm the next two years for the cap. Were going to need the $$$ Calderon is not worth that kind of loot. We need a PREMIUM PG.

Using the stretch provision on Calderon will give us 4.4mm in 2015 and 4.7mm in 2016--that is a LOT.

Guys like Fish, Paxson and BJ did a good job of staying in front of their man. Even Kerr improved his defense over the years. We don't have a good enough frontcourt to cover for Calderon's D.

This would be like trading Calderon for Felton

Then waiving Felton or possibly buying him out

Splat @ 12/23/2014 1:59 PM
I would use the Thigh Master on Calderon. Suzanne Somers said it kept her in the game.

Calderon is a mistake

smackeddog @ 12/23/2014 4:03 PM
I think one of the reasons phil got Calderon was to try and attract one or both of the Gasols- likely we end up with neither but he won't vanquish him until the game has been played out.

If we did this two years ago we wouldve saved some face.
