Just a Rumor. Real Gm Im not a real GM fan but when news like this slips out it have me thinking. I'm just asking could this be true? Are we out of touch? Is that why we are loosing?

The New York Knicks' lack of experience within their front office is a potential issue in making deals happen.

Phil Jackson is in his first year as an executive and he doesn't have interest in suddenly becoming a networker.

The Knicks, therefore, don't have anyone who regularly calls around the NBA to gauge the value of players, according to a source.

"No one has Steve Mills' phone number," said one Western Conference executive.

Jackson went into the Knicks' job expecting to evaluate the front office after the first year. Mills has never previously worked in basketball operations.

Agree. I thought Mills was awful last year and did not support his coach. At some point maybe his inactivity was due to the expected hiring of Phil but that still doesn't account for his overall poor performance during his first and second tenures with the Knicks. I thought there was no way Mills would be retained. Surprised Herb was let go.

Papabear, we have a rookie coach, a rookie GM, and a rookie president. Not a great combination. We need someone with experience, Phil is learning on the job as well.

Phil gets 10 million a year from Dolan and he can't get his own gm? Come on Phil knew exactly what he was doing and with 11 rings all he has to do is pick up the phone and make a call.

Don't get me wrong, every trade that Phil signed off on is on him. Having a GM who is more plugged in and a better talent evaluator would give Phil more options.

I agree Phil should help Fisher become a better coach. Phil wasnt brought in to be a GM. If Phil is worth being paid that much, he's worth having his choice of GM and there is no way you can convince me that Mills was his choice.

I agree. But here is my question. Why would phil not want a top notch GM if his reputation is on the line. I Think Phil had no idea what he was getting into.

You believe Phil picked a former President who did a very good job of tarnishing the reputation of a franchise he has very strong ties to, a GM who signed off on signing JR Smith's brother, to be his right hand man? I guess we will have to agree to disagree Papabear.

I don't understand why Mills is the hurdle?..Phil isn't able to build an infrastructure around Mills to get the job done??..Or ask Mills to make the calls??..Phil just gave a rookie coach a historic contract..And his hand are tied in the front office??..Come on..Blaming Dolan for everything at this stage is lame..This is Phil's show, like he wants it...

Phil didn't go into this knowing everything there is to know about being a front office executive. Having an experienced GM would help him make the transition, not to mention his connections. Im confident Phil knew that. Mills couldnt get a job in the league after he was canned, where were the connections? He had to work for Magic. Of all the people out there, he wanted Mills? Jackson couldnt even get the medical staff replaced.

No way Phil wanted Mills around. Negotiations took forever with Phil. Dolan is incredibly loyal. Loved Layden and Isiah no matter what they did or how incompetent they were. Mills is that guy now and Phil is saddled with him. Agree that Phil should be able to get another guy to take on that role and essentially reassign Mills as is often done with the Knicks.

I don't buy it..Park the mofo in an office and get the job done...Dolan excuses..Mills didn't pull the Calderon trade...The medical staff is for all of MSG, not just the basketball team...How is that Phil's arena anyway..Phil knows Docs...

Knicks made two trades one with Dallas and made a 3 way deal with Cleveland and okc.....

the article is bullshit. The Knicks have a shitty roster that they ate trying to turn over. If nobody has Steve mills number maybe they have his Facebook or follow him on instagram. Whatever it means nothing.

So you mean to tell me the Knicks don't communicate with anyone? If there is no deal to be made then why call people? If he had someone calling they would say he's calming and annoying everyone.

Regarding the Phil-Mills situation, I think the reality is this: Phil knew he was coming into the GM job with little experience and wanted someone with him that knew the paperwork/technical aspect of the job, Dolan insisted Mills could fill this role for Phil and since Phil thought he would be making all of the basketball decisions anyway, he didn't challenge this and accepted Mills as a sort of secretary. He didn't push for a better candidate because he knew he himself would be making the important decisions which is why mills is still around.
