At 10-46, the New York Knicks have embarked on a new journey. Rather than embracing immediate success, New York is looking to the future and trusting Phil Jackson to construct a contender by starting from scratch.

That plan is reportedly being set in motion as we speak.

According to international basketball guru David Pick of Eurobasket.com, the Knicks have expressed interest in Lithuanian point guard Mantas Kalnietis.

Mantas Kalnietis has generated NBA interest. Knicks & Lakers are mentioned but Pacers – I'm told – sound serious.

Kalnietis, 28, had recently been sidelined by injury, but he’s back and active with Lokomotiv Kuban of Russia’s VTB United League.

A broken collar-bone forced Mantas Kalnietis to miss six months. He returned for Kuban, seems rusted but that's natural.

It’s not hard to see why New York is interested.

Kalnietis is a 6’5″ point guard with excellent court vision and intriguing athleticism. He’s a five-time Lithuanian Basketball League—known as the LKL—All-Star and was the 2013 Lithuanian Basketball Player of the Year.

As a four-time LKL, two-time LFK Cup and four-time Baltic League champion, his track record is tremendous.

In terms of how he’d translate physically, Kalnietis has won two professional dunk contests and has a strong 205-pound frame. He’s not the best shooter or the most explosive player, but he’s instinctive, thrives in the pick-and-roll and reads the floor exceptionally well.

Having played key roles for Lithuania in runs to a bronze medal at the 2010 FIBA World Championships and a silver medal at the 2013 FIBA EuroBasket, he knows what it takes to thrive against high levels of competition.

It’s unclear how likely it is for the Knicks to land the 28-year-old Lithuanian star. What can be deciphered, however, is that Jackson will be active in constructing a force to be reckoned with.

Any attempts at improvement are welcomed at 10-46.

He sounds like he would be a very good pick up.

I disagree. He hasn't been awful when you consider that he's come in and had to figure out the system on the fly and actually has been able to adjust fairly quickly. This is one of the hardest systems to just pick up and master right away. He's going to get better as he learns the ins and outs of the system and his teammates. Think about how long it's taken other players to get comfortable in this system and you've given Shved a few days. Come on man.

Nixluva were never going to make it to the off season. Shved is awful? Clearly this guy has not been watching. He had a hell of a game in Detroit.

These guys never pan out. I'd stay away from this player.

I'm told that the nation of Lithuania has registered a complaint with the U.S. State house alleging that Phil Jackson should be brought before the World Court on charges of tampering.

On a more serious note- you wonder if this guy's agent is putting out this kind of rumor to amp up his value with the team that really wants him.
