Kevin Love got injured and its a contract year. Horrible timing. Will this affect his next contract?
This is exactly the reason why I can't blame Melo for not waiting to become a FA when he was on Denver. There are no guarantees and you need to take max money when you can.
Look at Wes Mathews ... he is screwed!
Melo did what any of us would have done.
no he's selfish, fat and hates kittens.
The stuff I have read on this site about him, granted most it coming from a select and vocal few is insane. As a pro athlete you dont get these years back. People act like giving up $5mm is nothing, whoop de doo... when Melo is 65 and 30 years removed from this contract will $5mm matter then?
It also sheds light on FA. Its easy to say wait and cash in later, but often there is no later.

he was not stupid enough to go the chicago and leave 50 million on the table.
I would have liked to see a bigger discount for the knicks though.
love has an opt out. The injury should be a short term thing. He can stay with cavs and they can offer him a max deal extension. If they don't, Love will be free. They would likely trade him at that point (like Melo was).
If Gilbert has a brain they should get a handshake deal NOW cuz Love might not want to play so fast if not 100%. If he has a handshake on a max extention should he injure his shoulder more by coming back he is safe.
If Love planned to opt out, he might not want to play.
If the shoulder is just dislocated and the tears (not all tears are the same!)are not bad his value won't be too affected.
I see Love still has options. Mostly he'll get his money but might not have the freedom he wanted.

Not Loves case specifically ... how about Wes Mathews?
You need to take max money when you can. If I was a pending max FA then I would sh1t my pants everytime I jumped.
I don't blame anyone for taking the money; the idea is to alway cash in at the highest pick of your value. Not everyone is built like Lebron. This game is very unpredictable.
It's funny, most of the same insane clown posse voices whining their Melohate are the ones usually most vocal about the whole "plantation" philosophy behind the NBA whenever work stoppages or lockouts occur.
The article I posted by Mike Vaccaro last week sort of pointed out that Melo realizes you don't get your time back in this league. Time is precious.
But, no matter. These more brilliant GMs to be, these altrustic philanthopists of NY Knicks basketball, these true donors of dizzying basketball IQ would have signed here after ensuring:
1) Gallo, Moz and Wilson were entrenched in long term deals.
2) Stat's knees were cured forever by SHIELD.
3) taken only 1/3 of the vet minimum for a one year deal, to ensure cap space for future generations
4) fired CAA and utilized polls on the UK to determine the most beneficial and useful salary to play for.
wow, that almost reads like one of those old Budweiser spots...

True Haterz of Genius....
KLove can still get max dollar I think..His value diminished a touch with his play in Cleveland..But folks will still be at his door..Depending on Phil's back channel deals, I would offer him 17/18 over 4 years, the length of Melo's deal..Really depends on where he is physically before he signs..

WE do not need Klove in NY. Let him go to LA

Like you said, he'll get the max. I can't imagine him coming here for a discount.

I don't see this as being a purely money thing (for everyone). Sure that seems to be the first thing, but I would (and have) ditched the money and gone for what made me happy.
And I walked away for a huge chunk of change (to me, 6 figures) for unemployment and to follow my heart. And it worked out well for me.
It all depends on what your goals are (or if you have any) what life means to you. These guys get paid lots to play a game, personally, I'd go to the team that made me happy.
Love is done for the playoffs. Sucks for the Cavs. And very curious how this will effect FA for him. He may decide to play another year in CLE and test the waters in 2016 when the cap goes up.
It'd be pretty hilarious to me if the Cavs won the title now with Love on the sidelines.
Realistically, though, they're going to have a hard time getting past the Bulls and Hawks.

I kinda agree with Love - it sure looked intentional (to hurt/harm) and I can't believe Kelly Olynyk has been suspended one game- should be more like 20

It looked pretty intentional to me, too. I think the NBA should review it again.
Cleveland won't win without Love. People don't give him enough credit in how important he is to that team.

I'm curious. Their defense is better without him.
The Bulls are also not exactly looking invincible against Milwaukee right now.
For some reason the Cavs become a lot more interesting to watch now that they have some actual adversity in their path.

I was like -- "Kevin Love HATES kittens! That bastard!" Then I realized you meant Melo. So, I was ok with it.
