No argument here, on that, if that was the most likely option.

But is it?

Melo
Zinger
Grant
Early
Greek Freak 2.0
Galloway
Calderon

There's a strong chance that both Zinger and Grant will be starters this year, given the lack of talent on the roster. Rookies. Galloway might start as well as the shooting guard. A 2nd year player without a full rookie season in the pros. Melo certainly isn't going to be the leader.

The Knicks have quite a bit of roster to fill out, including someone to play center and wing help, without a ton of cap space to get it done, not relative to how many needs they have.

You can get a vet like David West, who isn't coming here for cheap, and get his leadership, and eat that cap hit. That cap looms large when you don't have a starting center and are so weak on the wings.

I like Scola for teaching Zinger how to get away with contact, how to refine his footwork, how to operate in close contact, how to use your body for leverage, how to massage the refs, when to pass and what to look for against defenders. Sorry, Amundson is nowhere near Scola in terms of pedigree regarding low post play. Not even close.

Knicks invested a lot in Zinger, they need to create a support structure around him to help him thrive. Giving him no one who is an NBA caliber starter, or was once, to help him learn the pro game and it's nuances is not helping him.

For what the Knicks need to do and need to get to actually round out a team, even a treadmill team, the cap space they have isn't a tremendous amount. A lot of the names getting thrown around are names the Knicks just won't get.

He is too old

I agree he is old, but I think both Fisher/Phil Jackson want players that are familiar with the system and provide veteran experience

It would likely be a vet min contract and Caron Butler did play for Lakers for a couple of season as he was part of the Shaq trade, so he might have some experience in the Triangle and we want him for OFF THE COURT/LOCKER ROOM VET experience as we lack leadership/vet players to help develop our younger guys

Would Orlando take back Calderon to trade Hezonja for Porzingis since they are pretty tied at SG with Oladipo?

If it's even conceivable, I would sit LMA and DJ down together and show them 1 & 1 contracts that pay them each like 16 mm next year with opt outs.

This is my daydream.

Nemanja Bjelica is ready to make the jump to the NBA, Minessota has his rights, but the New York Knicks are pursuing him and hope to get him via a sign and trade deal.

Apparently Euros do this thing where the throw the ball, but not at the hoop. Kind of towards another player. They call it puh hassing. I think it is German.

Here is a link of a breakdown of the Knicks salary cap situation just for reminders

Quincy Acy---------$1,181,348 Team Option
Travis Wear--------$1,045,059 Team Option
Ricky Ledo---------$1,184,095 Qualifying Offer

"Big Name" Free Agents '15-'16 Max Salary Knicks can offer (w/o Sign and Trade)
Omer Asik, Draymond Green, Tobias Harris, Reggie Jackson, Knight, Leonard, Matthews, Monroe, Butler, Kanter, Danny Green, Middleton, Thompson $15,532,585

Afflalo, Aldridge, Rondo, Dragic, Gasol, Hibbert, Jordan, Love, Lopez, Millsap $18,639,102

Chandler, Wade, Al Jefferson, Ellis, LeBron $21,745,618

Do the Knicks have other money in addition to cap space such as exceptions?

Yes, the Knicks will be able use the "room exception" if they do not go over the cap (at the cap counts). This is $2,732,000 that will allow them to go over the cap and sign a player.
What else can they do? What if they waive Calderon?

If a trade can not be made, the Knicks have the ability to "stretch" Calderon's last 2 years, $15,111,239 over five years (double the years left +1). This puts 3,022,248 dead money on their cap room as opposed to his $7+ million. By doing so, the Knicks open up another $4,380,564 and add another cap hold leaving them with an additional $3,855,471 in cap space that can be added to the "Spending Money" table above.

Phil said when he came here that he would be looking to do things similar to the Spurs. Mills mentioned how seriously they were looking at other good Euro players they could go after.
CrushAlot @ 6/30/2015 6:50 PM
I think Caron Butler would be a nice pickup for the Knicks. The bucks waived him. He might sign a vet mini. He still plays significant rotation minutes. He definitely would be a good locker room presence and leader.

We really need a player like aldrige or jordan. Monroe is a good offensive big man but we need one who can do well on both sides of the floor
