This is a case where you can take a guy that has talent but may not have been able to put it all together yet. You put him in your system and see if you can get him right with a clear role. You coach him up and work on his flaws and things that may have held him back from contributing. The same way they took a flyer on Shved and he looked a lot better in the role we gave him. Some players have the talent but perhaps not the clear vision of how they can succeed at this level. You give them a better understanding of their role and suddenly things can click for them.

Well said. Definitely down with offering him a contract. Was just reading that we're meeting with him today. Feel good about this one--young and skilled. Should do well in this system. Young man could do a hell of a lot more than what he's shown in the NBA thusfar.

I always liked Williams though. I think he has a lot of bottled up talent that will eventually be unleashed

i definitely agree. i wouldnt mind signing him (for pennies) and see what he can do. i'm not expecting much except for a few bad fouls and nice dunks. if he exceeds my expectations then great. its just sad that we need ALOT more but we're not evaluating scrubs for roles. but baby steps first i guess

With some young players you have to look beyond what they've done so far. Sometimes it's circumstances that mess up a players head and they look far worse than they should. It's not easy but when you do some research you can find those players throughout the league. It's not like it never happens that players suddenly find their niche and play closer to their potential. It happens all the time. When you're in our situation you have to be open to this approach.
IF the cap goes up to 69m instead of the projected $67m then the knicks should hold back on offering Williams or any other player right now.
They could possibly have enough room to offer a players 4 yr/65m if they stretch Calderon.

Eventually it will settle in that the Knicks are still in good shape. We're so used to being in cap hell or making stupid moves. We don't know how to react to boring old sound basketball moves. I think the narrative that the Media pushed that Phil is out of his depth kind of influenced a lot of fans perceptions of what is going on.
Derrick Williams is the exact type of player the Knicks need to sign. Dude was a #2 pick so he obviously has talent. We are in no poistion to attract big name free agents, so the hope is with minutes and a fresh start, a guy like Williams realizes his potential here. 17 wins forces your hand a bit and we have to hope we catch lightning in a bottle. We have seen talented players bloom later than expected...Gerald Green, Brevin Knight, Carroll, Whiteside, etc...

Derrick Williams on a deal like Thomas Robinson is great but anything beyond that is crazy.

I'm hoping the deal is for the cap room exception. Williams is a tweener and still a project but maybe they feel he can improve with a specific role in the triangle or as an interchangeable Forward with Melo and KP between the 3/4
