Monroe is a good player, I thought he would have been good here but again, he's a role player and has plenty of holes in his game to go with the positives. Whoop de doo. Move on
I was hoping we'd close the deal, but Monroe definitely is not irreplaceable. Just one of the bigger names in an otherwise less than stellar free agency.
Not sure what was actually offered, but I do wonder if drafting Drago could have impacted his interest. Different games, but potential concerns over front court minutes/touches?

Monroe's max would have started at like $15.8 or so under the original estimates of the cap (which might go up). It would have been a slight overpay, but I think it was a deal the Knicks should have more aggressively pursued. You are not going to get this guy to accept a less than max deal, so Phil should not have even tried.
That being said, if we could go sign Koufus and a Derrick Willams or a rugged b-class power forward, we should still make the playoffs, which is really the goal next year if we want to attract FAs. The Bucks got Monroe because they made the playoffs this year. That is a big deal to FAs.
Wow..So disappointing. It's irritating actually to think we didn't offer this man his max--a reduced max I might add which = a deal. Big, young and productive--already a 16/10 player, this guy's well on his way to better numbers than that provided his PT and shot attempts increase, even marginally increase. I said it yesterday when we heard they asked Monroe to take less than his max (which tells me the AW report is correct--sounds like to me we never offered it), this needed to be presented the right way. They should've told him we want you regardless--if you want the max, it's yours. But if you take x-amount less, we can do this (and then proceed to tell him EXACTLY what "this" could be). If it was handled like that, I have no problem. If it wasn't and they never actually put a max offer on the table for this young productive player as one of the scenarios, then it's a gross miscalculation that's squarely on Phil. Simple as that...We'll probably never know now...But just going on what's out there and what we've heard, doesn't look like we offered this man the max and that's beyond f--king irritating!!!

Monroe's a main draw, Lopez is an ancillary piece...in this free agency anyway. If it comes down to it now--I like Koufos better than Robin Lopez. I know for a fact Koufos has untapped offensive versatility from his college days that could eventually resurface (I would actually make it a point to make sure it did if I brought him in). Lopez is at his plateau. Go get Koufos now if anything...
So now we move on to Enes Kanter? And they honestly feel like they'll have success here? Explain that to me. I probably have Kanter rated slightly higher than Monroe (a tad younger, slightly more offensive versatility) but essentially you're looking at pretty much the same production ceiling with both players. They go about it differently but productions-wise, you're looking at pretty much the same thing--efficient offensive production, good rebounding with the average defense. Big difference is we were in the driver's seat with Monroe; Kanter's restricted--OKC will match any offer for him, they're probably just waiting to see what the market will wind up being for him. We can try but that team traded assets for him and he performed well for them. I can't see for the life of me them letting him get away. My guess is they'll sign any offer sheet for him...He never even got a chance to play with Durant, and he didn't play much with Ibaka from what I remember.. He'll look even better on that team once they get everyone healthy. Goddamn Knicks man, I swear. Watch--we'll meet with Kanter and then not offer him the max too. 
I mean what are they doing??? We really needed a headline player here imo...Maybe now Aldridge becomes the prime target--he's not going back to Portland and he doesn't want the Lakers. I would've preferred the younger Monroe, Kanter too, but I guess I can swallow going after LMA now and trying to put him together with Melo, Afflalo, Kristaps, Grant, maybe Derrick Williams, maybe Koufos etc. and try to focus on winning sooner than later. Gimmie a better alternative..
Bucks seem an odd choice. They aren't Monroe away from contending or winning anytime soon. At least from my perspective.
The Knicks, however, would be more of an unknown. I'm not saying they are going to rocket to the top or the Monroe would have made them a high level contender, but it would have made them more interesting.
It seems players no longer want a challenge. Why be part of building a winner...I'll just join a winning team. Why be try to rise to the challenge of winning in a big market...I'll just get my cash and be the focus in small market with few additional prospects.

No it's not a good sign. The max for Monroe is $15-16mil
Scrubs are signing for $10-12mil right now. The market is skyrocketing and Phil decides to ask Monroe to take less. All this over saving us $1-2mil after we already have an injured Melo $124mil
Monroe met with us first. He wanted to be here. Phil expressed his interest before last season even started. Aldridge met with San Antonio first. Lebron met with Miami first and sign there.
Phil epicly blew this one man. All of a sudden he decided to lowball him after fans criticized him for giving Melo everything he wanted.
Monroe would've been great in the triangle and great playing center offensively and defensively next to Porzingis one day. Monroe is only 25. We blew it. No way to sugarcoat this one. $15mil is not a lot. He gives you so much more than Tyson did for the same price. He would've made this team dynamic with Affalo. Now we are back in the lottery next year without a draft pick and Melo is a year older. Unfuckinbelievable

Yeah, I figured they'd go defense over offense. Oh well, I'm sure Kidd and his staff have some interesting schemes ready for Monroe, Parker, Freak and Middleton.

what I don't understand is there wee ppl , some here and mostly in the media who were killing the knicks for even saying we wanted to sign munroe, all he could is score, defensively challenged not a good fit next to melo etc and so on. Then we don't get him were ripped for not getting this offensive forward/center that could play so great in the triangle. His own agent says all four teams offered the max he choose a different team, a play off team a little bit more ready than our 17 win team. Why are we getting ripped for a player nobody wanted us to sign???
