Knicks · I'm sorry - Phil has been an outright disaster (page 1)

crzymdups @ 7/2/2015 5:25 PM
Let's recap:

Gave away Tyson Chandler
Gave away Iman Shumpert and JR Smith "for cap room"
Drafted a player who is several years away with no picks til 2017
Hired a rookie coach to coach a style of play the rest of the league mocks

Geared everything towards free agency, then:

Blew his shot at Greg Monroe - reportedly didn't offer him a max contract.
Didn't even get a meeting with DeMarre Carroll
Players won't even meet with us

the one good move he made is maybe Jerian Grant, though we're rumoredly pursuing Patrick Beverly and already have Langston Galloway on the roster

I'm sorry, I don't like to be a downer, but this is an astoundingly bad performance. I'll watch the team to root for KP, Grant, Galloway and stuff.... but man, this is ugly as hell.

I wouldn't be surprised if Phil and Fisher are gone before the end of next season.

mreinman @ 7/2/2015 5:26 PM
he must be getting tips from his buddy MJ
StarksEwing1 @ 7/2/2015 5:29 PM
So far phils best move was the hardaway trade. It was definetly a steal for us getting a player like grant BUT i expected more from phil. Not all great coaches can transition into great GMs
yellowboy90 @ 7/2/2015 5:30 PM
The only mistake he has made to me was Greg Monroe but if he can get Tobias and Lopez I'm cool Another option is Lopez/Euro or Tobias/Joseph or Tobias/Bjelica
SwishAndDish13 @ 7/2/2015 5:31 PM
Carroll isn't that good and is injured. Certainly plenty of things to complain about but good chance there was no meeting bc they didn't ask or want one with him. He is a system player. Perhaps they didn't think he fit theirs?

Shump and JR had no value. That's the prior GM/Management's fault. Not his. The rest of ur points/criticisms are fair.

crzymdups @ 7/2/2015 5:32 PM
And the kicker in all of this - he re-signed Melo to a huge five year max deal. And no other move he's made has supported or been in concert with that Melo move.

Why sign Melo if you're going to completely tear it down?

Phil thought they could win last year at first - that's the truly terrifying thing. He thought a starting front court of Samuel Dalembert and Andrea Bargnani could bridge the gap and get us to the playoffs. Then he rightly blew that up. But we screwed the draft position. Then, worse, he have completely completely punted on free agency.

Maybe we get Robin Lopez? Who is half the player Tyson Chandler is. Maybe we get David Lee for one year? Maybe?

in phils defense i doubt resigning melo was his call. That was dolan most likely

There is no way we can afford to offer both Tobias and Lopez contracts. Also, with Orlando missing on Millsap, they will almost certainly match any Harris offer.

Bjelica would be interesting, but we have nothing to offer Minnesota.

I agree about Carroll. I think he was opportunistic and got his deal when the money was better than it ever will be again for him. I don't think the Hawks would have paid him that. Nice player but he was overpaid in my opinion.
StarksEwing1 @ 7/2/2015 5:35 PM
Harris is a RFA. Orlando isnt gonna let him walk. Even if they did harris probably would look for a better situation

Lopez is Tyson on a slightly higher usg and probably better rim protection. He is not the rebounder Tyson is though.

How can he have put it ALL on Free Agency when he clearly put a lot into the draft and UDFA's over his tenure here? To distill it all down to who he gets in FA is really missing a lot of what he's done. We haven't even finished the 2nd day of FA and people just assume that it's a complete failure. Knicks were only the favorite to sign Monroe so basically he only really missed on one FA that he was supposed to be able to get. There are other players still available so it's not over.
y2zipper @ 7/2/2015 5:36 PM
Getting rid of JR Smith was one of Phil's smarter moves, even if he had to move Shumpert to do it. The Chandler trade didn't work out because Calderon didn't stay on the court.

Phil did fine on draft night. He had the fourth pick, and picked the consensus guy with the best upside AND got a first-round pick for Tim Hardaway Jr. That's what he's supposed to do with that pick. Porzingis isn't going to sell because other players only watch prospects during the NCAA tournament, just like most of America. The saying in NBA analysis that "rookies don't ever make a positive impact on teams" and generally, that's true. All these guys are years ago, we just have to hope that KP becomes what we think he can become. New York just has to have the patience to let him develop, and we can do that now that there's no real pressure on the team to really win anything anytime soon.

What we've learned from free agency is that Carmelo Anthony doesn't draw established NBA talent to play with him. That's not really a big surprise to me or anyone who pays attention. Now that we know that, the Knicks can rebuild in a more realistic way. There's one more pick to surrender before the assets that were given up from a lot of the bad GMs are finished, and then the team can start building after that.

crzymdups @ 7/2/2015 5:37 PM
Melo took less this year so the Knicks could get free agents. Wonder how he's feeling right now?

I really wouldn't be surprised if he demanded a trade by training camp.

TPercy @ 7/2/2015 5:38 PM
Allow me to enlighten you with some positivity.
Tyson Chandler-He was probably going to leave anyway, but hey! we got Thanasis and Early ...
Iman Shumpert- We got a 2nd rounder for him, better than nothing. He was never going to be successful here and I highly doubt he would have resigned.
Drafted a player who is "several years away" Come on now, yes he can get stronger but he is very quick for his size, a great shooter, a good weak side defender, underrated in the post as well. He could very well be an ungaurdable player, but for now he needs to add some strength.
The rest of the league dosen't mock the triangle, in fact successful teams like the Spurs and GSW run really modfied versions of the triangle.

I got nothing for Monroe
Carroll? Do you really want to sign him to that ridiculous contract?
Players won't meet with us?How do you know?

If he demands a trade, the Knicks should move him. That wouldn't be the worst thing in the world at this point.

I understand bringing him back to see if you can put talent around him, but the message with this free agency is pretty clearly that established talent isn't hitching its wagon to him.

Agree. Phil needs to be opportunistic. He can still come out with a very good free agent haul.

Porzingis can be the saving grace. That's really our only hope here. At all.

I will root like heck for him to succeed.

But given Phil's other calls, I am skeptical.

Tyson was my favorite Knicks player in a long time. I would have rather told Melo to take a hike and retooled around Tyson. He's highly respected around the league. LMA may go to PHX just to play with him.

smackeddog @ 7/2/2015 5:41 PM
I don't understand - we should have kept slump and Jr so we could re-sign shump for $10mil per year and have JR opt out?

You're deciding having cap space is bad when everything hasn't even played out yet?

It was also reported that we did offer a max to monroe

How is it his fault Carroll signed instantly with Toronto before he even went to visit his other scheduled team? Is Phil supposed to force players to come here?

I believe Ned knows Tobias and has said he and his family want him to come back home. Also, Orlando is notoriously cheap and tried to sign his replacement in free agency yesterday. I think there is a good chance that if the right contract was offered they wouldn't match. Not sure if it is time to make an offer on a rfa yet though.
