Posted this in the Barf thread also.

Kid got game and heart, unlike some other ex Knicks...

Snippet:

The Spaniards engaged in a friendly sporting contest against Macedonia on Saturday to prepare for the big Eurodance. Hernangomez didn't start, but he made his presence known in 19 minutes of playing time: 12 points (6-9 shooting), six rebounds, one steal, one block and zero turnovers.

One nice thing about Willy G is that is game is defined. He plays inside has obviously become skilled inside and it becomes easier to get better when you know your niche.

Yep....thats a life lesson that applies to almost everything. And thats also how the NBA used to be back in the days.

Now you have guys like Lamar Odom that plays 5 positions. Does everything well, but nothing great. Doesn't have a defined position, he's just a special player. Every year, there are more and more guys coming into the league with this special title.

You even see it in pickup games....Bigs trying to play on the outside.....Be more of a guard than a big. It starts with the youth.

I think AAU has really messed up player development. The AAU culture does not let a big man to really develop. AAU is like an all-star game. They all want to get theirs. A big man will not get his unless he is playing like a perimeter player.

I remember back when I was little....the problem was everybody thought like Briggs. If you are a big kid, they force you to be a center or forward. Then what happens when the big kid stops growing, and he's now forced to be a 6'4 guard. But his entire youth was developed to be a forward / center because he was the biggest kid. I think this is why they decided to let the skill dictate what position they will play. Then you modify and build up their weakness later on. Some kids may be tall when they are young, but don't have the heart or strength or even want to be a banger down low. It's a tough decision to make at an early age, because it really dictates how their game will develop later on.

For example, what if OK4 stopped growing, and only reach the height of his dad. He would be a 6'3 low post player, that mostlikely would never make it to the NBA. I don't think you can or should have a concrete development structure, and force everybody into that structure. I think sometimes you will have the KD types or KP types that are special. The odom types that are special. These guys would've been forced to play center and never develop the guard like skills they have now.

Back then, the game was inside out. You needed a big man to build around, to win championships. I don't think thats true now adays. Not when you have GS winning the championship with their guard play or small ball. MJ leading the bulls.....I think each situation is different based on the skill set of your (potential) star player.

EnySpree @ 8/24/2015 2:22 PM
There needs to more development at the youth level. Everyone wants the athletes so they can win. Alot of coaches have no intrest in actual coaching. Go to any tourney in the summer and you see guys yelling at kids like they ate yelling at the tv set. It's embarrassing.

Back to Willy....

This kid is really good. Fundementally sound big. In the clip he catches a pass with one hand and finished I'm one motion. That's very impressive.

Phil has created a pipeline through the D-League and Europe. That's how you run a franchise.

Yeah, that is what jumps out, he seems fundamentally sound, extremely so. Nice that he is not awkward as you allude to.

I was worried with the French pick, but this cat has 1st round pick written all over him and as he fills out, wow. I have a feeling he will be a rotation guy when he comes over.

Really excited about what he is doing with the d league and draft and stashing in Europe.

Can't overlook Gaines' contribution, though, or any guys we have overseas, since Phil is not personally active across the Atlantic...

I wonder how they feel about Louis Labeyrie. Dude was very physical in the Summer League but he did not look like he had much skills. Well...he was a very good defender and rebounder I guess.

earthmansurfer @ 8/25/2015 2:22 PM
I'm going to bookmark this as I bet the kid is going to be rated either in the late lottery to mid first round pick type talent, for the 2016 draft.
That will feel better, especially if he is rated higher than the pick we end up giving to Toronto!

He could fit in down the line. He got his taste if the nba. if he can get better I'd love to have him. He's a nasty dude

I totally agree with you. I think that this was a San Antonio type move like Splitter.

wargames @ 8/26/2015 8:02 AM

This video has no sound because Youtube sucks.

He looks like he could come to the NBA and be a decent rotation big due to his good passing instinct. I like the splitter/scola comparisons for his game outside of passing.

Thanks.....whats funny is I forgot I wrote that. I had to read it over myself. I was in one of those moods at the time....bored at work.....Plus I love to challenge Briggs.....He's full of good knowledge, so it's like the great posters make you step your game up.

But I'm hoping Willy can become another solid addition next year. You can never have too many low post options.

My only concern is is defense. I read scouting reports that said KP bailed Willy out a number of times with his help D. On the flip side, Willy's physical play helped free KP up on offense. I see Willy's game falling in line with Nilopla Pekocvic's game. Let's hope Will benefits from better health down the line.
