Knicks · dont make any changes (page 1)
KP is looking great. Fine with the fouls. He's getting his reps, he's getting his confidence and he's playing impact minutes. He and Melo at the forwards are more definatly a combo that can win big sooner than most thought. Last night he harrassed Love all night and challenged many of Lebron's shots as well.
You got a nice peek into what a 2-man game with Melo and KP could look like with that nice dish from Melo on the P&R for an easy layin, and when KP kicked it from the post to Melo for an open 3. There is most definatly a great pairing there. Two forwards who can thrive in the post and shoot from anywhere. KP has DPOY potential. His length is insane. Like AK47 + 40%
The guard situation needs to improve. AA will really help. He's certainly better than Jose and Sasha (who played well last night). Galloway is great. Grant looks good, but the scouting report is aleady out on him. Give him the long jumper, and take away the drive. He's got to establish that jumper.
Rolo is shooting too much, but he's a good fit, especially with KP at the 4. Greg Monroe is a good offensive player. Maybe folks have cleansed their memory of Amare Stoudemire, but its hard to build a great "team" about bigs that dont defend... at all.
The right frontcourt is starting. KOQ really gets hurt by stretch 4s, and most of em are these days. He's great against bigger guys, and when he can patrol the paint and by physical. He's only 6'10 but the 7'6 wingspan makes up for some lost ground. I would prefer him at the backup 5 than 4 but meh.
2-3 doesnt jump out as an impressive start but things look pretty good. Melo is shooting 36% (that will improve) but is doing other things and that are reflected in his WS/48 which is a very good .183. The guard situation will improve, whether its simply by AA coming back, Grant getting better or Jose remembering how to shoot. The defense is there. Sure there are some lapses but overall this team defends every night, and we go 10-11 deep, we challenge shots and we are very physical.
No changes... just patience. Let things play out naturally. Knee jerk changes dont inspire confidence.
We totally stop pushing the pace, which co-inside with d will and grants minutes sinking
Lopez is really not that good on both ends
KOQ..2 minutes here, 2 minutes there, 3 minutes after the half
And every big we have other than KP, holds the ball for 7 seconds or more, evident of the last 2 games which resulted in us scoring just 86 and 84 points
SOMETHING has to change back to how we played in the preseason
But for scheme fit and keeping some semblance of triangle's sake, I know the trillionth thread and all, Galloway should start in the 1st unit.
Afflalo is needed badly to balance the starting and bench units. He should be a roster upgrade on paper at least to both Jose and Vujavic back there.
Melo and Lebron had bad shooting nites. Melo rebounded nice.
Nobody could shoot in long stretches.
Ropez is fine and is what he is. This is who he is.
Both Cav's and knicks played an ugly game. Looked early season.
That given I have read we should:
1. Get a better coach. Naturally its assumed that would be an improvement.
2. Banish Jose from the earth.
3. Start Early, who can't get off the bench.
4. Trade Melo for a better tomorrow.
I want the team to win as much as anyone but I an not under the illusion other than perfect 20-20 hindsight I can figure out better than the brain trust assembled by Phil.
We are 2-3 after a tough start and we basically start a 7-3 rookie who has exceeded most early expectations and have a solid yoot guard core (gallo and Grant) solid in the rotaton playing big minutes and finishing games.
Work in progress.
Agree about interior defense. When guards are getting to the rim unimpeded, you cant expect Rolo to clean up the mess every time. He is one of the best interior defenders in the league, but he shouldnt have to deal with an open lane to the rim. Didnt have a good night but I wouldnt trade him for a few more points in the paint and swiss cheese defense.
Calderon has to hit his shots or there is no good reason to start him. Grant is taking it to the rim more with every game.
The only possible move I would make is to look into what is available at combo guard. Sasha and Calderon are aging veterans with an unreliable shot (right now) Id like the Knicks to have more shooters in case the vets run out of gas. A player who can also defend would be great. Wary of riding too much on Afflalo's health.

Did Williams sleep with Fishers GF? What gives with the drop in minutes?
He is +19 in game 1, takes 17 shots (hits 8) and gets 19 pts.
Game 2 its 18 minutes
game 3 its 15
game 4 & 5 its 10.
Someone tell Derek we don't have our first round pick, so stop trying to lose.
If Williams isn't playing the right way, then we need to play his way because it was fun and it produced.

At minimum Jose needs to be removed and I really believe for tempo that Derrick Williams needs 24-26 minutes. The 110 points per game the first 3 were fools gold--and maybe so is the record. I think we are closer to this 85 a game without Affalo.
Galloway Williams and Oquinn--longer consistent minutes and use Admundson for bench minutes for the energy and rebounding and early if even as a spot starter to get some length /athleticism into the line up. When you get beat 27-0 in fast break points--thats a staggering number that must be addressed. You address that by bringing size length and athleticism/energy into the fold.

I agree with you here BRIGGs, but i still think calderone is better off the ball as a spot up shooter. Right now he's taking shots coming off screens and pick and rolls and he doesn't have the lift, the speed, or the rhythm to be successful playing that way.
He doesn't even slash to the rim for a give and go on a pick n roll, and in the triangle, he doesn't cut nearly enough, which is why lopez is getting way too many ISO's and everything is half court
And competitive in EVERY GAME.
I'm ecstatic.

The only thing that needs to be addressed sooner than later is Jose. His play has been dreadful. We were bad on the break last night but that was more a product of poor rebounding than anything. Thats a one off.

This wasn't the finals Cavs though. I'll give you the Spurs and Hawks games, but this one should've been won.
No Kyrie, Shump, or JR. Lebron is still not 100% with his achy back, and the Cavs couldn't hit a 3 the whole first half.
If they had speedballed it, they probably win this going away. Instead, ZERO fast break points, and Fisher play and match ed the Cavs rotation instead playing his style.
KP getting into foul trouble throughout didn't help things either, as he's the Knicks best 2 way player.
Obi Wan Afflalo you're our only hope...take us away from the misery and despair that is Hose-Zay.
Its obvious we are taking big steps back.

We all have different expectations. 9 new players, two rookies in the rotation and two rusty 30+ year olds vs. teams that have battle tested and finely tuned for at least one season prior vs. one just off a 17 win season.
I am under the belief that it takes at least 20-30 games for team like this to find some relevancy of itself.

geez fish. a poster who is actually patient and not over-reacting right now? i didn't think that was possible, aside from me. i couldn't agree more with your post. calderon has been crap, but we're going to need him when afflalo comes back and settles down the scoring, calderon is a distrubuter and a guy who hits the 3 at this point in his career and nothing else. right now, most of the starting unit is trying to makeup for the scoring void that afflalo leaves behind, once he comes back, guys can settle into their roles better, including calderon. melo has been bad, he's not going to play this poor for much longer (you would think) so let's just be patient and build some chemistry amongst the starting and bench units.

Knee jerk changes dont inspire confidence.
very good post

The same coaching staff that trots out Calderon? Maybe they do see something different. Also, if Williams played that many minutes he make rival Mudiay for most turnovers

I am torn on calderon. He is a huge problem but not much can be done at the moment. Starting grant now would be a bad idea.
