Knicks · Who should stay and go (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 4/10/2016 11:33 PM
Obviously we have no control over Carmelo Anthony. I do think if the team listened to Carmelo that KP would not be here. I think Carmelo kind of like Kobe--should have little say in organizational structure. Although I would personally like to find a trade that made a LOT of sense to swap assets for Carmelo--I have to sit with him on our roster reluctantly for now.

Guys who I think should not be back

Seraphin Admundson Early Calderon

On the fence

Affalo Galloway D WIlliams

Back with smallish 1-2 year contracts only

Sasha(I think he developed into a quality 3 point threat after it took him time to get his NBA legs back)
Lance Thomas

Back

KP
Carmelo
Grant
Lopez
Oquinn

Unkown Wroten Willy G

Team needs

I think were going to need another shot blocker/rim protector and a stretch 4 if Williams bolts
We need a COMPLETE full rebuild of our backcourt. We need 4-5 new players in these positions depending on the opt out of Affalo. I know we owe Calderon $more year but I would rather remove him at this point.

We need diversity. We need a TRUE PG somewhere(do not care hat the height is there--we need size 2-3 guys who are 6-5// 6-7 who have some diversity athletic ability and atleast one more 3 point specialist type.

I want us to continue for the most part to focus on young legs but instead of acquiring non offensive players or players who need transition to other positions--I want to see high skilled players for their positions on both ends and atleast one athlete that kind of did what Gerald Wilkins did here for the Knicks moons ago.

If they dont trade Carmelo we likely wont trade anyone so the only way to fill roster spots is by acquiring draft picks and signing 2-3 guys to really small 1 year deals if we want to save premium cash for 2 players that we can get in on in free agency.

mreinman @ 4/10/2016 11:51 PM
yay!!!!! rolo stay!!!! yay!!!!!!!1
crzymdups @ 4/10/2016 11:55 PM
I really liked what I saw from Seraphin against the Pacers and then he's barely played the next two games for some reason.

I really like your idea to bring in David Lee as the third big man, Briggs. Hopefully for ~$5M or so? Who knows if he'd take a paycut to come back...

Then it's all about the guards. Mike Conley is my dream scenario. More likely might be Brandon Jennings and Courtney Lee. I agree Calderon should be gone.

I'd like to try to keep DWill at a reasonable number.

I'm sort of down on Galloway these days. I think he's too physically limited to be a plus defender and he's not a point guard.

crzymdups @ 4/11/2016 12:31 AM
I also feel pretty strongly that Sasha Vujacic should be brought back. He's a great team guy, knows the Triangle, and is finally shooting well.

One of Phil's better moves, imho.

crzymdups @ 4/11/2016 12:32 AM
Lance Thomas is a big necessity to bring back, imho. Team tanked after he started having knee and concussion woes.
wh4t @ 4/11/2016 12:35 AM
derrick williams is staying
wh4t @ 4/11/2016 12:37 AM
calderon needs to go.... stretch provision.
franco12 @ 4/11/2016 12:42 AM
I find it odd that people say - we can't win with so and so. But, what if the person we got in their place was worse?

For years, everyone bad mouthed Kurt Thomas. He was flawed, but better than any power forward we've had since KP arrived.

So, in terms of who stays & goes, in my mind, I'm ranking them from must stay to must go in order

1. Kristaps Porzingis - Obviously, no brainer.

2. Jerian Grant - I'm ranking him second, as he has come on strong once our front office and coach went with him and gave him confidence

3. Carmelo Anthony - if I could trade him, I would, assuming the return was valuable

4. Robin Lopez - a true asset to the team, and a player who contributes above his stats

5. Derrick Williams - I'd like to bring him back. He can make an impact on the flow of the game. He has the athletic ability we're desperate for and missing otherwise.

6. Tony Wroten - roll of the dice back court

7. Lance Thomas - nice to have back, but don't match a stupid contract

8. Kyle O'Quinn - I like KOQ - I think he's burly and occupies space, like Lopez, but perhaps less impact. Good value on contract.

9. Jose Calderon - I'm only stretching if the money/roster brings back an upgrade

10. Langston Galloway - I like Langston. Keep him on a nice deal, and year three might be the charm

11. Sasha Vujacic - nice end of year, no doubt. But he is on the wrong side of 30 and should not be getting major minutes

12. Kevin Seraphin - he's shown flashes, but there is a log jam ahead of him in terms of bigs with some talent/youth

13. Cleanthony Early - he's such a great athlete, but he doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I'd rather use his spot on our euro-stash or some undrafted NBDL'er.

14. Lou Amundson - I love Lou, but clearly he is not needed. Sign him to be Herb Williams 2.0 and see how many coaches/GM's he can outlast!

15. Arron Afflalo - definitely hope he opts out. We should be able to do better in terms of finding value for his money/budget.

wh4t @ 4/11/2016 12:49 AM
no doubt in my mind that rolo is staying

Phil is gonna give Early & Galloway one more season to prove themselves. They're still potentials with the same contracts and is cheaper to keep them. If phil isn't satisfied with them in the first half of next season they would most likely be gone

Amudson, gone

Nalod @ 4/11/2016 7:23 AM
Calderone is our best guard and you think he is the problem?

The problem is that he is our best guard. Once he is not, then consider his role. At 7mil you very well might not be replacing him with someone better. 7mm is back up money. Since the guy is about team. If in a back up role, he is an asset.

Very good list. Feel the same way pretty much.

Nalod @ 4/11/2016 10:18 AM
I basically agree with most of that. Early I think gets one more chance to be a 2 guard so I'd bring him back on more year. Of course, he gets beat out by another player, that's an upgrade.
Sasha came along nice this year but it never should have come to that. His role was to look pretty, mentor the yoots and be a great practice player. The back court never progressed past Jose being our best guard. As I said, the problem is not jose, its the solution that never materialized.

KOQ showed nothing other than taking the place we hold dear for the "honorary Ronny Turiaf role"! Every team needs a cool dude with an excellent beard!

Nalod does not prescribe to the knee jerk reaction that we need to rid ourselves of players when they don't perform across the board without full knowledge of their situation. For example KOQ, what kept him back this year?
Derrik Williams, he does not seem to have changed that much above where he has been previously. My expectations that a light would go off in his head and he'd be a Gerald Wallace type player, Trevor Ariza, or Kwai Leonard "Llight". Hope over reality?

Weather it be Early, Williams or any other player I basically don't feel qualified to make roster decisions as I don't see what the coach's do.

Cartman718 @ 4/11/2016 4:41 PM
Stay...
Kristaps Porzingis
Carmelo Anthony
Robin Lopez
Derrick Williams
Tony Wroten, hell we just signed him
Sasha Vujacic, teach the triangle be the vuja you can be
Kevin Seraphin, needs to get a summerful of workouts under him and he'll be fine, much better passer than KOQ

Go...
Kyle O'Quinn, hesitates too much and is worried about his shot selection too much.
Jose Calderon, not even a question
Langston Galloway, take care now, bye bye then
Lou Amundson, again not even a question
Arron Afflalo, more than anyone else on the roster, I want this idiot to leave NYC.

smackeddog @ 4/11/2016 5:02 PM
I don't think it's healthy having too much roster turnover at once, so I'd try to keep everyone except Afflalo, then decide who we want to keep out of O'Quinn and Seraphin. Then get rid of either Calderon, Galloway or Wroten.
Paris907 @ 4/11/2016 5:23 PM
Gerald Wilkins wow now that's setting back the clock. He was athletic but in today's environment I'm not sure he'd keep up with SFs.
Keep : Sasha Williams Wroten Thomas OQuinn
KP Lopez

Gone : Melo (for value)
Afflalo
Galloway
Calderon
Early
Admunson
Shop: in order

DeRozen
Fournier
Batum
Rose (part of Melo trade)

Oh hey, did you hear Melo has a no trade clause?

Knixkik @ 4/11/2016 5:30 PM
Definitely Stay (core group)

KP
Melo
Lopez
DWill
Grant

Would like to keep, but not a necessity

Galloway
O'Quinn
Wroten
Lance
Early
Vujacic (end of bench guy vet)
Amundson (end of bench vet)

Go

Afflalo (since he clearly won't embrace 6th man role)
Jose (will be a solid backup for a contender, time for us to move on)
Seraphin (too similar to KOQ who's signed long-term, let's get more athletic)

EnySpree @ 4/11/2016 6:53 PM
I think we need to keep evolving as a team. No big roster changes just keep the guys together.

I do think Lance Thomas deserves a bump in pay. We can't afford to reward him what he deserves. We need to keep building up the team. We have Cleananthony Early who plays the same game and is still under contract. We need to slide Early into Lance role. It's time for him to step up and play.

Lou serves no purpose and probably should retire and grab a clip board and coach.

Affalo needs to find another team. Nuff said.

I would even attempt to move O'Quinn. He's Basically an over paid Lou Amundson. Good one sec horrible the next.

Everyone else could stay. The Knicks can get upgrades to fill the two open roster spots

meloshouldgo @ 4/11/2016 7:17 PM
Stay - KP, ROLO, Sasha, Grant, Dwill
Meloshouldgo find himself a contender
Affalo - May be - is a good player
Every one else - MEH

There's a lot of pros and cons and blah blah, but our players are overrated on a bad team. People are talking about the "core" on a 37 win team, we shouldn't really worry about it. If you keep your 37 win core, you will win 37 again.
