The New York Knicks are looking to upgrade their backcourt, and one player on their radar is Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose.

The Knicks have had internal discussions recently about trading for Rose, league sources tell ESPN.

The Bulls' interest in trading Rose, 27, is unknown at this point. The Knicks do not have many strong trade chips outside of Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis and future first-round draft picks.

Both Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek and GM Steve Mills have said that the Knicks are interested in upgrading their point-guard position in the offseason. The Knicks' incumbent starting point guard is Jose Calderon, while other potential point guards include second-year guard Jerian Grant and free-agent signee Tony Wroten.

Rose will be a free agent after the 2016-17 season. He averaged 16.4 points on 42.7 percent shooting and 4.7 assists in 66 games last season.

The six-year veteran has appeared in just 50 percent of the Bulls' regular season games over the past four years due to various injuries, including two major knee surgeries.

I thought about him as a potential option the other day when I heard the Bulls might be making him available. I used to love his game, but I think he might be done at this point? I haven't seen him play an impact game in three years, I feel like.

I have no idea what to think about this, but a potentially interesting option who is only signed for one year. Do you give the Bulls a 2018 lotto-protected first rounder and Jose Calderon for a one year flier on Derrick Rose?

Ugh, who would we give up? This could easily turn into Marbury 2.0. This is Isiahesque so I hope it isn't true.

He's not even a poor man's Marbury now.

So you guys wouldn't trade KOQ and Calderon for Rose?

Only one year remaining to his contract ($21.3M), by the way.

Afflalo, Jose and O'Quinn for Derrick works. I can't imagine that would get it done though. Also, Rose is a Chicago kid. This could mean they are keeping Butler unless they are moving on from all of Thibs guys.

This is probably a situation very similar to Bargnani - if the Bulls can't trade Rose they may just waive him. There's something off with Butler and Rose. If they decide to stick with Butler, they may well just buy out or waive the last year of Rose's deal.

If the Knicks could make a package that didn't involve giving up a pick and did involve Calderon... I'd be curious... but I'd hate to include a first round pick.

Hopefully they discussed it internally and decided it wasn't a good decision.

Why would the Bulls do that? The money doesn't even match

Everyone has cap room to absorb salaries. Money doesn't need to match.

Knicks could theoretically trade a second round pick for Rose and absorb his salary.

I would rather see what we have in Wroten or Jerian... Rose never was a good passer. He's 16 and 4 now.... I think Wroten can do that with similar percentages. Actually he was doing that before he got hurt

Robin Lopez & Jose Calderon for Rose could do it. Bulls will lose both Noah & Gasol, so they'll need a big. Porzingis will be playing Center in this offense, hence making Lopez expendable.

I don't think you waive a hometown kid who won the MVP. I don't know what the Knicks have to give them though. Jose, Afflalo, and O'Quinn works on trade checker.

I like the deal and I would say Melo Calderon for Rose Bobby and Noah. Throw OQuinn in if need be. Portis will be solid and Rose is short term solution. Up to Melo of course but Butler and Melo would get along fine.

That's an interesting offer. I would consider that.

Then maybe try to sign Joakim Noah in FA along with a shooter or two.

Also, here's what Bulls fans are saying - some dudes want Melo for Rose, some just want to dump him for cap space - http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopi...

I have no answer for that.

I admit to being fascinated as to what the backcourt might look like next year and this is one of the first rumors I've seen since Hornacek came on board.

I'd be intrigued if we got Rose - he's still younger than Steph Curry and Westbrook... I just wouldn't have a lot of big expectations...
