I still can't believe this actually happened. It was long overdue. I don't know a lot about these prospects but apparently we have a top 5 and maybe even the top farm system now according to the articles I'm reading. This was incredible work by Cashman and the Yankees. I hope they're actually keeping these kids to try to build for the long-term and not planning to use them in a starphuck. I was hoping McCann and other vets could be moved too but this was still a better job than I could have asked for. Any thoughts on this board?

A middle-of-the-pack farm system is now probably in the top five. Great job by GM Brian Cashman in turning two relievers and a designated hitter into young talent with plenty of upside -- exactly what the aging and mediocre Yankees needed to do.

Smart moves by Cashman who has probably been hindered in the past from this type of personnel refresh by the Steinbrenner family. Yanks now have one of the best farm systems and will have significant salary coming.off the books this year and next (CC, Tex, Arod total about 70 mi). For a team with tons of cash and resources, this is a deadly combination. Hopefully they make smart moves to surround young core players with veteran leader types who produce (similar to moves they made in the 90s.....think Paul O'Neil, Scott Brocious types).

Yeah, I agree. I've been harsh on Cashman at times but it does look like he can make great deals when the Steinbrenners get out of the way. I hope they stay out of the way and let Cashman build long-term. It could be a deadly combination like you were saying.
Cashman is a hall of fame executive.... he fires out and gets it done. No matter what the organization wants to do he goes out and gets it done. He moved a 39 year old free agent to be for a killer package. He got a killer package for a top free agent reliever that might even end up resigning with the Yankees this winter. He also got the adequate compensation for arguably the best closer in the game.... all in just a couple days. He's a beast.

The potential for a major revival is there. Some of these guys could become Yankee staples. They will make our current prospects better. Plus it gives them a full open canvas to build a new dynasty... mo money, mo money, mo money!

Well, the team has been disappointing for a long time. Maybe that's on the Steinbrenners and not Cashman, or maybe both. We don't really know for sure. If that's entirely on the Steinbrenners and Cashman really is great, then I hope they stay a mile away from all future decisions. This is an exciting and shocking new direction!

And yes, we have assets to make trades with as well if need be. Saw one kid is a Sheffield. Wasn't Gary Sheffield and Doc Gooden Cousins?

He just does what his bosses want and does it well. They may or may not listen to him, but whatever is going on, if the Steinbrenners or the brain trust or whoever wants something to happen Cashman makes it happen and then some.

We'll still get that starphuching game going... but at least now we have the potential to grow our own Jeter, posada, Mariano, Petite and Bernie... we'll see but it's still some exciting shit nonetheless.

Yeah I agree with all this but they still had to make those moves this year. The team wasn't going anywhere with those players.
Chapman and Beltran have said they might return to the Yankees. So we might get the players back and have all the prospects we just added.

Are you sure there's a hard salary cap in baseball? I thought it was just a luxury tax for having a payroll above a certain amount.

Yeah, I don't watch or know anything about the minor leagues either. But all the minor league prospects are ranked. Apparently, we and the Astros each have 7 of the top 100 minor league prospects, and that is more than any other club. You'd expect each team to have 3.33 of the top 100. So 7 is pretty awesome.

Yes, there is a luxury tax and Yankees have paid like 88% of all the taxes collected since they went to it.
My point was really if the product is not "winning", they don't sell many tickets. Yankee fans are very spoiled.

Im not a big baseball fan, but watching rookies and prospects in baseball is really a great thing so says by baseball friends. Key to a successful franchise is to cultivate talent as it fuels your roster and allows for trades.
A good prospect is also a lower salary. Also, to promote players from the minors and trade away good PROVEN talent can bring in even greater prospects or proven players in positions needed.
This is obvious stuff, but ST Louis Card's get it done this way. Letting Pujols walk was awful, but you can't over pay either.
Cashman just saved the Yankees from their well-documented foolishness of the past era. In just a few days he changed the Yankees' fortunes for the next decade. We may not win it all in the next couple of years, but we weren't doing much with the likes of A-Rod, Texeira, et al anyway.
