I'm a white guy and I totally get where Lebron is coming from. I highly doubt that if Lebron's agent and business manager were 50 year old white guys that Phil would be referring to them as a "posse". And, for the record, here's what Phil thinks of as a posse:

BOOOOOM --come back to reality son.Saturday is the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, the biggest day in racing. Many folks who would never go to a horse track put on their finest clothes, find just the right hat, drink that awful tasting mint julep, and become a racing fan for the day.
And no one has embraced Derby Day more than Tom Brady.
I love the pictures of Brady and his posse getting ready to board their private plane and head to Churchill Downs. I look to see who’s with TB12, and what Patriots and hangers-on are traveling in style with their quarterback.
I missed Brady calling everyone a racist

Did you read the context I presented before you blew your top??..Brady is hanging with 10 dudes hopping a private jet to the Derby and posing for pictures on the tarmac...A little different from business partners running his businesses...

I think it would be wise to ask Phil what he was referring to 14 year later instead of jumping on his back. Any group of any ethnicity can have a posse.

Talk to Bill Gates and his "posse "bizness"
https://m.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/4...
so it looks like posse according to phil involves: "people who fetch their cars and girls". now that was over a decade ago. lebron and phil need to talk about what exactly phil meant (for the record i dont think he meant all of that - but i dont know). until then, lebron and his team only have those previous statements from phil to go by
15 Responses to “Tell Mark Zuckerberg and the rest of his posse of shameless billionnaires to use their own billions to pay for all the benefits for illegals, not form an “advocacy group” to bribe corrupt politicians to pass amnesty, so the billionnaires will have cheap labor and American Citizens will be stuck paying for all the benefits for these illegals. Take shameless Zuckerberg to task!!!”

Yeah maybe he shouldve called Phil before opening his mouth?

i dont know if he has phil's number? i dont know if they had the time to talk. i dont know.
but lebron reacted and spoke - i think he actually spoke incorrectly by implying that phil is a racist. that was careless - id rather save that for the REAL racists. but i completely get his raw reaction - i wont lie, i had the same reaction until i calmed down and thought about it

I dont have a problem with that quote, Lebron was a teenager. But Lebron isn't a kid anymore. Phil is right about the dangers of keeping a large entourage, just have to watch ESPN's "Broke" as told by current and former players themselves. His biggest mistake IMO was underestimating LeBron's capacity for personal growth, and the level of maturity he already possesed at the time.

Totally agree, Im only referring to the quote from the book. As I wrote upthread, LeBron isn't a kid anymore, using that expression to refer to a grown man (and his team) on his way to becoming a billionaire is not the way to go.
Well I don't see it as a big deal even thought it's making me reflect on stuff he had to say about JR and Timmy when they left...If others have an issue with it, I get it...
I have said in the past after his comments, players/FA, see, feel this stuff and weight it...

Yeah, I think he was referring to a young group, as opposed to specifically a black American one. These people all do jobs for lebron and are people he hangs out with. That has nothing to do with race.

You guys are mistakenly weighing what was said, versus what was received...
wow, the word posse is offensive? what a fucking joke. grow a fucking set, its a word to describe ANY group of people.
my guess, lebron didn't like the fact that phil was talking about him and tried to turn it into a race thing just so phil "has egg on his face" or should i not use that reference because it might subconsciously also be racist somehow? cmon people.

Its ok to say Tom Brady and his drunken posse getting on board a plane but not ok to say Lebron and his posse? Bottom line two way street--this was a non issue.

Let's clear something up...This isn't the first time LeBron and his crew have been referred as a posse..I'm sure I could find a multitude of articles saying that..But WHO is saying it is important and about whom..Phil Jackson is saying this about LeBron and his business partners...And has said it before in a more unflattering manner also described in a stereotypical way...Read it yourself..He said his posse will fetch cars and fetch girls for them..Who uses the word fetch in today's world...Phil Jackson is very astute and calculating as to exactly what he is saying....

I really just think LBJ is over reacting and phil is living in the past
"Coded" language? Yea, I don't know. It seems a little sensitive to me, but that 2004 quote is probably the context LeBron is operating from.
12 years later, Phil still has the same regard for LeBron's team as if they are a bunch of moochers versus the billion dollar team he sees them as...
Phil's use of "posse" certainly is dismissive. I can see why LeBron and Co. would be peeved, characterizing his associates as distracting hangers-on.
But no doubt the word has its most recent context from 80s & 90s hip-hop and "urban" slang — I immediately think of "posse cuts" or Arsenio's house band — so it's dated and makes Phil's lingo look "triangular" in 2016.
And it's not just being used as purple prose by a journalist about Arnold Palmer or in some random thread title about a white QB. It's Big Chief Triangle saying this, so anything outside of praise is bound to peeve LeBron one way or another. Coded language about race? Phil was definitely talking slick, I don't know if he was trying to be that slick...
Anyway, it plays into the "Phil is so out of touch" narrative, which is unfortunate. A slick talking salty Baby Boomer versus sensitive and sincere Millennials is probably the real culture clash here.

I guess one could take it that way.
LeBron and his guys are both business partners as well as good buddies, they do business together, they go out and have fun together, they grew up together. If it was high noon and they were all walking into Nike headquarters to round out a sneaker deal, posse would seem strange to me and indeed a putdown. Those guys are all strolling to a club on the weekend, posse seems appropriate.
The context of what I think Phil was referring to seemed to be more of that later, his Mom was included in the reference.
Posse not the best choice of word? Sure. Such that LeBron felt the need to handle as he did? Dude should probably check in again with his marketing crew; if he wanted to show himself to be the bigger, smarter, better man he could have made very clear that he was displeased and also not throw down in such a way that divides.
