Lampe was a "typical" Euro player - could shoot, pass, smart, etc. But he was not a defensive presence nor athletic.
They did talk about him being a lotto pick, but he "slid" right to us.
Lampe wasnt given a chance to develop and he needed that time. He actually had a nice career in Europe and came back to play against nba competition for preseason and did well. It was a different climate as far as developing players back then. The Knicks didn't give him a chance worth even bringing up.
And give all credit to Kristaps.... this kid is special. He's been an nba player from the time he was a youth. Give Phil the credit for believing in his scouts and believing his eyes and his heart like the rest of us basketball junkies. Kristaps is the real deal

Scott Layden considered drafting him high in the first round but he dropped all the way to the second round. That should've been a major clue of what to expect.

What are you talking about? How was he not given a chance to develop?
There are a ton of players who play well in Europe but aren't good enough to play here. Nothing wrong with it, just means they weren't NBA talents or had no interest in competing against the best.
I remember when he was drafter, there were high hopes he would be an impact player and potentially reach Dirk like status. I think we all knew it was a stretch but the Knicks were so bad that we had to be optimistic about something.
I liked Lampe but he never had the ceiling that KP has.

And to think we could have drafted Winslow or willy Cauley stein and they would have received less boos.
Only thing in common is both are white, both euro's.
We hyped on Lampe because we knick fans were hungry for a rookie success.
We wanted a hero.
Its great KP is exceeding expectations.
cant wait to see KP go up against Anthony Davis and Towns, to bad they are in different conferences.
you could tell the work KP put in this summer, the bank shot, she post moves, learning how to take advantages of miss matches, and he's showing toughness, getting slammed to the floor and popping back up like WHAAT!!

if i remember correctly everyone thought he was top ten but no one thought he would sign that year

That's correct. He was expected to go in the lottery. He wasn't doing anything overseas to warrant a lotto selection, but that was right at the peak of the euro wave into the NBA where everyone was trying to find the next Dirk, so he fit that mold. Today, he might not go very high because of his lack of athletic ability. I remember hearing something like he could barely dunk off of one foot and he was 7 feet.
Lampe would have benefited from an effective DL/minor league system. He became a productive player in Europe over the years...I expect that he could have become a decent bench player in the NBA under the right circumstances.
With that said, Porzingis' physical abilities and all around play pretty much dwarfs what Lampe brought to the table. Euro ball has also become much more competitive in recent years from what I have seen, and the players emerging as top picks in the draft are going to be better for the most part.
Lampe was a wet dream. KP is the truth!
Lampe became the player that most of us hoped he would be. Unfortunately it didn't happen until a few seasons after he went back to playing ball in Europe.
Never expected Lampe to have the skill set of Porzingis. KG was the only player with a similar skill set back then, and no one was comparing Lampe to him.

Yeah, I think most people were hoping Lamps would reach level similar to Dino Raja or little higher. Raja was a skilled offensive player who was soft on defense. KP is on a different level. I mean, the dude is 7'3. There is no real comparison for the player KP is and what he can become. Maybe a young Arvidis Sabonis is close.

He dropped because of his euro buyout
Well, whoever thought he was a lotto pick obviously swung and missed big time.
