Knicks · So we are okay with trading Melo for Love or JJ F...N Redick? (page 1)

HofstraBBall @ 1/27/2017 1:55 PM
This makes no sense to me. So this makes our future better how? Other than giving Phil the sole spot on the Knicks throne? For all those that kept preaching how we needed to get rid of Melo for the good of our future...JJ Redick? Kevin Love? Lmao that we are complaing about Melo not passing but we want two guys that have never heard of the word pass. And Melo not playing defense...Love and Redick on D? Come on. Why dont we just waive Melo, give Phil a chance to reset. (Third time around in three years) Sign another guy like Noah with extra cap space and have Phil reset, once again, the year his contract expires. Great planning.

Would I like to get a solid player and a couple of 1st round draft picks for Melo? Absolutely. Will that happen with his NTC? Absolutely not. Why would any team offer anything of value if they know they are the only destination Melo will approve. So if thats the case, why not keep him and focus on the real problems? Needing guards to be able to stop penetration(Phil's FA fail). Having a PG that penetrates and passes out to his two stars. (Phil's FA fail). Having a center that can play modern defense and cover stretch players. (Guess Phil thought Noah would be good defending Triangle, cuz everyone else plays it). Having a center that takes up just a hair of attention from the defense and can make a jump shot. (Still Noah). Having a PG that can shoot an outside shot. Oh and a defenssive coach or head coach that teaches....whats that thing again...the reason we lose? Oh yeah..DEFENSE.

I know we cant get anyone for Rose or Noah. No one is that stupid. But how about we waive Noah, play Willy. Or let KP go to 5. Because we all know its better than playing Melo and KP out of position. But that would mean sitting Noah and throwing some egg on Phil's signing decision. Would also play Rose off the bench, as the backup 2 til the end of the year and play Burgundy instead. Would at least make sense to all the "Melo needs to go so as to go young' talk.

But what do I know? People are probably right. Get rid of a top 20 scorer(probably higher if he had a true PG), guy that wants to be here, guy that has tried to change to help the team, for a guy who cant play defense, doesnt pass or a guy that hates NY and is one dimensional. Makes sense. Unfortunately, Love, the best of the two options, is out so we now have the latter to look forward to.

god no, but we dont know whatll happen

I don't hate Melo, but he needs to go for his own sake (why waste the end of your career here losing) and our sake- we can't build a contender in the time frame he has before he gets too old.

The damage is done at this point now the trade talks are out there- it's just creating a horrific atmosphere around the team.

Am I okay with Redick (he would have to be traded because he doesn't want to be here), Crawford (lord no) and Rivers? It's a huge anti climax. I could get to feeling better about it depending on whether you can get a nice pick for Redick and if you can get rid of crawford. Likely we also include Lee.

Lee and Melo for a possible late first and Rivers sounds like a joke (especially when you look at what Boston could have given us if they'd wanted Melo), but if it's the only deal on the table then what choice do you have? Take comfort in losing so badly we get a top pick in the draft.

The guy I badly want rid of is Rose- I can't stand him and I think he's a huge part of the poisoning of the team. Get him out of here.

I don't want to get rid of Melo unless the trade is a 3-way that gets us a top 15 pick in the draft and a starter at the 1, 2 or 3. Otherwise, what's the point? Melo is NOT a cancer on this team. He may not be the piece we need/want, but he does what he has always done - i.e., score. He does it well. Anyone who thought he would be an all-NBA defensive stud wasn't paying attention to his entire career.

He also has been gracious and respectful of the City, the organization and his teammates. Yes, I want him traded if it improves our team through the draft. Otherwise, I want him to stay here and finish out his contract.

As to losing this year, we seem plenty able to accomplish that with Melo playing. So I'd look to trade D "no pass" Rose to a team that can use his skills or need cap relief and has assets we need (and/or picks). I'd look to trade Lee since he has value due to his top 10 3-pt efficiency and solid D. I'd look to trade Noah, but that would be a fruitless search unless we find an ideal partner.

If Melo wants to stay, he can. But he will have to accept losing. If he doesn't like that, then he must WAIVE his NTC so we can get a worthy return. We gave up so much to get him, there's ZERO reason for Jax to panic and trade him for bubkis. That's idiotic!

Yes, all rumors. Biggest take away from this is not the possible trade rumors but that Phil is willing to, yet again. make a deal where we get nothing in return. And yes, I know, we get cap space. Is that what we hired the great Phil Jackson for? Salary dumps? Any GM could have done that. And if cap space is so important, how does Noah's 17M help that for the next 4 years? Rose's 21M this year? Could have really used it to help get a couple of role players that would at least compliment our two stars?

Would have to agree. Although who is more to blame for the comment above?

MS @ 1/27/2017 2:36 PM
Rivers is terrible and making 12MM a year.
We were trying to get Crawford off the books 7 years ago because we thought his 10MM contract was bad. The guys is making 12MM a year over the next two.

Phil's negotiating and devaluing of his players before he moves them is downright embarrassing.

I have been reading the baords the past couple fo days...this is the best comments by far....

No rush...if we tell melo we are tankin...he can stay or go.

Its just buisness, not horrific to the team.
Its not good mind you.
Its not like there is a riff. Logic says melo gave a few teams he'd consider and Phil has to put it out there.
If there is a return, thats good. If it guts a team, melo not going to approve.
as for Phil and his throne, its someplace he has been for a while.

Melo is on the throne also. What if Melo is just about his point totals and little about team and Phil is just taking the rap?
so much we don't know.
Time to move on.

Weeks until deadline. Cav's are a freaking mess. I'd take Love is Phil, Warkentein, Gabriel, Gaines and the 100 or so assistant coach's like it.

These the same dudes that weighed in on the Calderon, Noah, Jr Smith, Shump, Hardaway deals as well??

Bonn1997 @ 1/27/2017 3:37 PM
Keeping Melo would be an F. Trading him for Love? A D- since he's younger and doesn't have a NTC. I'd rather get expiring contacts as part of a deal than get Love though. Reddick? It depends on what else is in the trade.

Bobby Marks on The Vertical Podcast with Chris Mannix:

I’ve talked to a lot of teams, and it’s not just the media that he’s not out in the public with. He’s not an easy man to get in touch with. If you’re going to try to make a trade proposal with the Knicks, you’re not going to Phil Jackson. You’re going to Steve Mills. And that’s how it’s been for teams in the trade process.

So teams are calling the Knicks? That's good. They need to communicate with Mills? So what? You think he doesn't pass it along to Phil? Phil has not said a word about Melo or really anything. How are people saying he is devaluing players?

I guess you could call it speculation. I think the guys at the Vertical are pretty locked in. Marks worked in the league for a long time. I have heard this criticism by guys that work in the league or are insiders about Phil. The take I hear most often is that other gm/presidents put in 10-18 hour days at their job and are in communication with their peers on a regular basis. Hearing the tone in podcasts it is always either disbelief or ridicule. I don't think that it is a good thing that the guy doesn't appear to be hands on at his job in any fashion including communicating with his players.

Looks like this shit could actually be happening:

Nalod @ 1/27/2017 4:51 PM
I didn't see anyting in that quote that tipped one way or the other. Looked like good old fashioned Phil bashing. leaves games early, or does he watch the end somewhere else.
He don't take the calls for trades according to rumors, but if he is arrogant and not patient, better he don't? Perhaps Its Mills job to filter out the crap.
corvetteknick @ 1/27/2017 5:00 PM
Hello all! new poster here, so glad to join the group. Long-time Knick fan going back to the last title years, including getting to attend Game 4 of the 73 series against LA.

I still see this coming back to Cleveland, as Lebron (not Griffen) is the real GM. I say the Celtics bite on taking Love in a 3-way deal, with Crowder, Smart and the Brooklyn 2018 pick. Celtics do not want Melo, but for them - Love probably fits what they want.

This is my thing. Everyone is getting mad and excited about reports from a media that never had a clue what they are talking about. They haven't been right about Phil from day one. They never know what he's doing until he does it.

Also Mills is the General Manager. That's his job to communicate with trans about trades, not Phil. I wish guys would cut it out. As I said before on here..... fans want the drama. That's what's fun to then, not the knicks.

Bottom line.... Phil knows what he's doing. Attention needs to be placed on how we can build going forward. Melo is at the end of his career. We should not be trying to build around him anymore. We could stand pat and do nothing and still be alright. We want to maximize our assets and prepare for the draft and the off season. That's what this is about.

EnySpree @ 1/27/2017 5:06 PM
Also.... why would we want Reddick or Love? Reddick is old now and Love plays KP'S position? That's obvious. Just because the media makes a report doesn't mean it is true. And again...they say Phil is hard to get in contact with. So stop calling out his name. Mills is the GM. I'm sure he is doing his job well and reporting back to Phil. We are at the feeler stage.... I'm sure thing will pick up when they need to. It's a month until the trade deadline.

KP is really a center. Love is a 4. Otherwise i agree.
