Knicks · So we are okay with trading Melo for Love or JJ F...N Redick? (page 3)

Bottom line.... Phil knows what he's doing. Attention needs to be placed on how we can build going forward. Melo is at the end of his career. We should not be trying to build around him anymore. It feels like Phil is actively trying to sabotage the team - he's come out and said stuff about Melo in December, the Rosen column a few weeks ago, and then the trade rumors leaked...
Phil is doing right thing for Melo.
He probably promised Melo the Chip and he is trying to stay with his word.
Melo has 100 times more chances to get to the top that Knicks in next 2-3 years.
He deserved it by his stellar play and his fans deserve it by their loyalty to him.
I wish them all a great success in this.

If the trade is good for Melo, I hope it can be good.
I'm really not thrilled with the way Phil has embarrassed Melo. It's not gonna be good for us attracting FA in the future.
The only upside is the 2017 draft is deep as heck. I think it might be best for the Knicks to just reset, but I wish they would have done better by Melo. He's been a good soldier for the franchise for years through a lot of BS.
He deserves to go out better than this. And he's very well liked around the league. This won't be forgotten by other players.

Maybe p'ing him off was the only way Phil could get Melo to agree to it. I'd hate to see Melo waste the rest of his career (does he realise he only has maybe 3 or 4 more shots at the playoffs as a meaningful contributor and he's on course to miss this years?) on a rebuilding project. I don't like the trade but I can live with it if we find a third team to get rid of Crawford and get a first for Redick. Of course after years telling us Melo has no value and is untradeable and is over-rated, as soon as he's with another team the media will do their usual about turn and start saying he's great and what a bargain the clips got and how stupid we were for not getting more.
HofstraBBall wrote:This makes no sense to me. So this makes our future better how? Other than giving Phil the sole spot on the Knicks throne? For all those that kept preaching how we needed to get rid of Melo for the good of our future...JJ Redick? Kevin Love? Lmao that we are complaing about Melo not passing but we want two guys that have never heard of the word pass. And Melo not playing defense...Love and Redick on D? Come on. Why dont we just waive Melo, give Phil a chance to reset. (Third time around in three years) Sign another guy like Noah with extra cap space and have Phil reset, once again, the year his contract expires. Great planning.Would I like to get a solid player and a couple of 1st round draft picks for Melo? Absolutely. Will that happen with his NTC? Absolutely not. Why would any team offer anything of value if they know they are the only destination Melo will approve. So if thats the case, why not keep him and focus on the real problems? Needing guards to be able to stop penetration(Phil's FA fail). Having a PG that penetrates and passes out to his two stars. (Phil's FA fail). Having a center that can play modern defense and cover stretch players. (Guess Phil thought Noah would be good defending Triangle, cuz everyone else plays it). Having a center that takes up just a hair of attention from the defense and can make a jump shot. (Still Noah). Having a PG that can shoot an outside shot. Oh and a defenssive coach or head coach that teaches....whats that thing again...the reason we lose? Oh yeah..DEFENSE.
I know we cant get anyone for Rose or Noah. No one is that stupid. But how about we waive Noah, play Willy. Or let KP go to 5. Because we all know its better than playing Melo and KP out of position. But that would mean sitting Noah and throwing some egg on Phil's signing decision. Would also play Rose off the bench, as the backup 2 til the end of the year and play Burgundy instead. Would at least make sense to all the "Melo needs to go so as to go young' talk.
But what do I know? People are probably right. Get rid of a top 20 scorer(probably higher if he had a true PG), guy that wants to be here, guy that has tried to change to help the team, for a guy who cant play defense, doesnt pass or a guy that hates NY and is one dimensional. Makes sense. Unfortunately, Love, the best of the two options, is out so we now have the latter to look forward to.
HofstraBBall wrote:This makes no sense to me. So this makes our future better how?
Addition by subtraction.
No leverage
Accepting it's time to start over
Melo is only moving for pennies on the dollar. The Knicks don't have any trade leverage. The best they can hope for is some kind of asset that makes the trade palatable to try to ease the minds of the NY fanbase ( other non NY GMs and teams are going to recognize this, NY won't trade if it will get it's front office totally roasted more than it will be already) But nothing barely more than some kind of consolation over a salary dump/dead roster filler/bad contract platter of "Meh"
The Knicks are not getting Kevin Love. They are not getting Blake Griffin. They are not getting Jae Crowder.
They are getting roster churn, maybe some contract relief for the future, mixed in with a bad contract, and likely some super protected picks.
I said it years ago, the BEST time to trade Melo was when Lin was here. I then said trade him before he hits FA and this was before the NTC contract. I kept saying trade him over the years. And now its pennies to the dollar. The Knicks would have gotten more if they simply moved on from him earlier and accepted he could not help them win period. He just doesn't make his team mates better and he doesn't play real team basketball and he has not truly developed his game at all.

Yeah I generally agree but the best time to move him was after that 54 win season. We could have gotten a lot.

Addition? Crawford 14M 3 years left and 36 years old? Rivers 12M? Bench player. Redick 7M and FA at end of year?
No Leverage? Taht was my point for not trading him? But you think its a point for?
Accepting its time to start over? My point that its Phil's third try. Did you read my post?
You say its a good time to trade him but go on to give reasons why its not? And trading him when Lin was here? So we would have build around who exactly? Wonder boy Lin? Is he still in the league? And your point makes no sense. As we won 54 games a year later. SMDH
Trade him because we can get several picks makes sense. Trading/benching some of the obvious problems and playing our young guys makes more sense. Trading him for crap makes no sense. Unless you just hate the guy. Would respect people more if they just came out and said it.

exactly, why trade him for bad contracts and a might be good end of bench players? trade rose and lee and oquinn and jennings get draft picks late and second round picks. think atl wouldnt want rose for like shebalosfa and their second round draft pick? lee and or jennings cant get us late or second round picks in such a deep draft with clarence " pick a winner" gaines at the helm we could get some nice finds.

Right. Yet you post asking what Wojo and Stein said on your next post. Who watches the NBA?
Here is some insight. Phil calls out Melo for being a "Ball stopper'. (When we are winning!!) Phils boy does a piece saying organazation thinks Melo is what? Phil met with Melo and then confirmed talks with other teams come out. Cavs reject Melo for Love offer. Clipps confirm talks but come out and say they wont trade big 3. And have you watched any Knick games this year? Clue, Phils signing for 17M is not doing so well. Phil blows up a 54 win team and we have won how many games since? About to do how many blow ups under him? Dont get how Phil cannot be held accountable for some of his mistakes? I get it, no one is perfect, but when a guy is throwing other people under the bus, he becomes a bigger target for me.

I wish them all a great success in this.Yeah, I'm not sure. Melo actually seemed actively upset in the post game interviews tonight. I think Phil is finally in his head.
Exactly and that's just what happened with the JR/Shump trade. Everyone was saying there's no way any team would trade for JR with all his on court antics and off court issues but as soon as he went to Clev and of course they were winning those same people were saying we got robbed in that trade.
Id rather wait till the summer if the Knicks cant do better than getting back players with the same expiration date on their deals.
y2zipper wrote:If Phil feels like Melo's play style is damaging the development of Porzingis, that's really the only reason to take this Clippers' deal. I'm not sure trading Melo for cap relief really does anything because the Knicks can't attract top free agents. I'd rather see them try to move Melo to a contender and get draft assets, even if that means the money goes to taking on a bad contract or two in exchange.
We cant get top free agents because we've sucked for years, because we were capped out on bad deals, and no draft picks. Doubt top FAs want to come here now, the only way to change that IMO is to show the Knicks are trying to build a real team from the ground up with them as part of the future.
Most players who come to the Knicks probably figure thst they wont stay long with all the roster shuffling. If we could shave a year or two off of Melo's deal, that would give the Knicks some room to maneuver when an opportunity presents itself, like Westbrook (dare to dream).
In the meantime, the Knicks develop the young players and draft picks they will be getting in the next couple of years. Build a team worth coming to for when KP's deal expires. Hopefully by then he will be an All-Star.

For the most part I'd agree but I think Love is more tradeable than Melo since he doesn't have a NTC. I'm sure we could move Love for something better than just an expiring contract.

Agree, but I doubt we can get that and draft picks? If it comes down to cap space or a unprotected first round pick, I will take the pick and absorb some contracts. Smaller contracts without NTC maybe easier to move even if they aren't great. Then again I honestly doubt anything will happen.

He’s not an easy man to get in touch with. If you’re going to try to make a trade proposal with the Knicks, you’re not going to Phil Jackson. You’re going to Steve Mills. And that’s how it’s been for teams in the trade process.
http://nba.nbcsports.com/2017/01/27/team...So teams are calling the Knicks? That's good. They need to communicate with Mills? So what? You think he doesn't pass it along to Phil? Phil has not said a word about Melo or really anything. How are people saying he is devaluing players?
This is my thing. Everyone is getting mad and excited about reports from a media that never had a clue what they are talking about. They haven't been right about Phil from day one. They never know what he's doing until he does it.
Also Mills is the General Manager. That's his job to communicate with trans about trades, not Phil. I wish guys would cut it out. As I said before on here..... fans want the drama. That's what's fun to then, not the knicks.
Bottom line.... Phil knows what he's doing. Attention needs to be placed on how we can build going forward. Melo is at the end of his career. We should not be trying to build around him anymore. We could stand pat and do nothing and still be alright. We want to maximize our assets and prepare for the draft and the off season. That's what this is about.
Good post and well said.
These writers just come up with stuff so they have something to put out for people to read.
I hope you are right but Wojo isn't a guy known for making things up. It isn't just NY beat writers saying this stuff.
Wojo and Stein are the benchmarks.... what are they saying?
Wojo is the guy who made the report yesterday about the Clippers and Celtics supposedly being involved - or at least the Knicks contacted them. But Wojo made that report, so you have to think it's legit.
http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/18569...I don't know if I like that trade. I'm not sure.
In some ways, I think it'd be better for the Knicks to rebuild.

Yup, don't forget they did exactly the same thing with Gallinari, Wilson Chandler and Mosgov too.
