Knicks · Woj: "Dolan by trying to fight battle, has lost war. Knicks are toxic free agent location due to Phil/Dolan" (page 1)

crzymdups @ 2/10/2017 9:01 PM

This is what all those defending the Garden don't realize.

This is a LEGENDARY PLAYER in the NBA. IF he did show up drunk - you get him some help. Not send A POSSE to round him up like a criminal. And I have a feeling we will not be hearing the last of this. I have a feeling Oak will sue the Garden and Dolan for libel, for calling him an alcoholic and abusive. That is slander and libel. This isn't going away.

This will cost the Knicks this summer in terms of free agents, and for years to come.

The biggest question is - will it effect KP. Did you catch his face when this started to go down the other night? Innocence lost.

This was a colossal colossal blunder by Dolan, all because he's such a small and petty coward.

It will haunt the Knicks for years. They're idiots if they don't see that.

Same goes for Jackson's treatment of Melo. Y'all can act like it's not a big deal all you want, but when your top exec is throwing your star player under the bus, other stars are gonna take notice.

The Jackson/Dolan era is going to be ugly as hell. Really this is going to be a mess til Dolan leaves.

30 teams have cap room this year - cap goes up to $105M or whatever. What free agent has ever helped their career coming here.

Woj knows more agents than anyone in the league - that's why he always breaks trades and draft picks before anyone else.

You think he'd go out of his way to make this up? What purpose would that serve?

EnySpree @ 2/10/2017 9:37 PM
Media scrutiny and corny ass fans..... that's why nobody wants to come here

Bad ownership, horrible taxes and horrible management again = 3 strikes. Say hello to Jason Smith.

Whof was the first and last superstar player to come to new York via free agency? Amare Stoudemire.... bye Felicia

They are more afraid of the media than anything else.

In the last 15 years we have signed one notable free agent.

Amare.

In the past 2 offseasons we have had max money to offer to Lebron, Aldridge, Durant, and many others.
None of them even met with us.

We're not a good team, that's #1 reason no free agent of high value is interested.
They want to go to a team that is a playoff lock or a contending lock.

Anyone that thinks that Chris Paul, Steph or any of these guys were even considering us after we go lottery for the 4th year in a row, is bat shit crazy.

Longterm, say 3-4 years from now we have a good team with young all-stars in prime, some of our lottery picks have peaked like KP and (this years). Maybe then a star would consider us. At which point if something like this came into play, yes it could affect us.

However in the Phil Jackson era? Nah. We can't even think about this as an issue until years from now.

If you are a top 20 player you can pick your spot. Do you choose a state that has income tax? It makes a huge difference when you are making over 20 mil. Do you choose a team that has bad ownership and bad taxes? Do you choose a team that has bad management? You have options. The Knicks already have to deal with a horrible income tax disadvantage. When you factor in ownership, cost of living, and bad management there is no reason to come to ny if you are an established player.
nyknickzingis @ 2/10/2017 10:31 PM
California's tax rate sucks as well and Paul is in LA and Durant went to Golden Stae.

Yeah tax hurts us, players will not want to take a discount or maybe will ask a few M more because it's NY, but the biggest difference is the teams talent level.

You saw the ESPN projections for this team. They have turned out spot on, if not maybe too optimistic. In free agency, the way the new salary cap is, the teams that are conteders or playoff locks already have the biggest advantage and net gain.

Where capspace helps teams like ours is that we can (I hope) sign some good veterns that will be good teammates and mentors to young players. I think this is what Lee and Noah are. I'm not sure they are worth what they are paid (Noah for sure not) but that's about the best you can get in the position the Knicks are in. Teams like ours who win 30 games a year are not signing all-stars in free agency. Come on, no way.

When this may become an issue is a few years down the road when KP is in his peak, our 2017 lottery pick if (a good pick) peaks as well, and we're maybe a good young team that's a playoff lock (big if there) then when it's time to go out and recruit a free agent all-star, it will hurt that Dolan's the owner. That's a ways way. It won't hurt with KP, because KP will definitely take the early money and guaranteed money. So will any other good young pick.

Derrick Rose most of us don't want to keep anyway. Plus I get the weird feeling he wants to stay in NY but we may not want to keep him.

Golden State is an amazing team. If the Knicks are an amazing team guys will come. The Clippers are really good. I don't remember Paul's options when he resigned but I don't think there were any good enough for him to leave where he was and he got paid.

A superstar for all of half a season. Are you forgetting that nobody was willing to max the guy out or pay him more than 3 years?

Why are people worried about Free Agents at this point? This team is going to be out of the FA market for the next couple of years as they hit the draft and start to rebuild this thing. The last thing we need to be worried about is the FA Market. We've done enough of that in recent years. Just draft well and start signing young talent that fits the team's needs. We need to build this team back up the right way and then at the right time get back into the FA Market but for now that's not the reality of where this team is at. We're no longer BUYERS.

If the Knicks don't resign rose they have a lot of cap space. Teams need vets. The Knicks have needs. They will try to use their cap space. The Knicks have 5 rookies. I think 4 of them come back. So you are anti Jrue/CP3?

I'm just PRO building this thing up with legit young Talent and letting them grow together. Eventually they should be more fit for a vet FA but that's not where they are headed. I really don't know why some are so intent on trying to continue along the path we've been on. This is over but Melo just doesn't know it yet. He should look for greener pastures and let this team do what it needs to do. Either way it's gonna happen if he stays. The only logical thing to do is rebuild around KP, Willy and the kids we draft this summer.

Phil should be looking at younger FA's to be sure but the older guys??? NO WAY. NO MORE throwing cash out the window. Try to see if we can get another 1st rd pick and see what they can do with a real youth movement. Jrue is young enough to make sense. I don't think CP3 is even close to realistic given how young the core of this team is going to be.

What is your approach if Melo stays. I think he is in NY after the deadline. I think the Knicks could get more for him before the draft but I don't know if that happens. If he is a Knick after the draft how do would you approach free agency?
CrushAlot @ 2/11/2017 12:44 AM
I agree about CP3 and any big name free agent. If Melo stays he is on an island hoping he can win with Noah,Lance, and the youths.
JamesKPolk @ 2/11/2017 12:47 AM
No, CP3 or anyone else isn't realistic because this owner is a DISGRACE and this franchise is the Cleveland Browns of the NBA.

EnySpree wrote:Media scrutiny and corny ass fans..... that's why nobody wants to come here

Yup, no one wanted to come here anyways. Sure they've pretended out of politeness, to improve their coverage and as a bargaining tool, but honestly who can list the FAs that have wanted to come here the past decade or two?

Lopez
Jennings
Noah
KOQ
Felton

Even Amar'e only came here because his other options fell through and we offered more money.

We need to build via the draft, then FAs might want to come, but really free agency is just for role players now, and players who have fallen through the cracks.
