Say we end up with the #7 pick and out of the Ball, Jackson, Fultz sweepstakes. Otto Porter is the type of wing we have been craving for for a while now minus the playmaking. This season his effciency, defense, WS have been great. If he were a 20 pt scorer he would be considered a star. Question is though is he not one because Wall and Beal and would he be one as a go to? Also is Wall the reason for his incredible efficiency as we don't have a Wall on our team. But as a player who is going to being it defensively, as well as hit 3s, as well as bring pure athletism. He is the guy.
So y would Wash be willing to do it? Main reason will be he will command max money of over 20mil per year. They have Beal, Wall, Mahini, Gortat, all making 15-25 next year plus Morris. They have Oubre waiting in the wings and made a move for Brogdonovic. They can instead use that #7 on a lottery big man for the future which is needed at rookie scale money. Oubre and Brogdonovic can take over the wing mins.
Think it would be a smart decision for both teams. If Porter comes in and gets to 17-18ppg while maintaining his efficiency and defense then we would have hit the jackpot.
I like Porter a lot. It would really depend on the long-term plan. I still believe we might be better off addressing our guard situation with either Monk, Smith, Ntilikina, or Fox. Monk, even though not a PG, can be an elite scoring guard. You can completely build an offense around KP and Monk and focus on filling in the holes with elite defenders and ball-movers.
I'd rather try and sign him. RFA but does Washington want to spend the money on him with the salary they are currently paying?

Signing him would be ideal but I don't think we land him as a FA. Another team will probation trade for him as he had major interest at the deadline. S&T will be our best option with #7. His defense, WS and efficiency is proven at the NBA level which we can't say about the rookies around #7.
Today the salary cap isn't a worry as we aren't going to sign any stud FAs for a few years and no one really has contract worth taking for draft picks.
He is young but the price is too high for a team that has Melo, Noah, and Lee on the books.
i happen to love otto porter. he's made some really big leaps since coming into the league. he's a really hard worker, he has improved his shot leaps and bounds since coming into the league and you gotta love that, since that doesn't always happen - he also has the ability to also put the ball on the floor. other side of the ball, defensiveily, he's a hard worker and is an above-average defender, which is great, especially at the sf spot.
with all that said, i'd love to sign him, but i dont want to trade our 7 pick. this draft is so incredibly deep at the PG position, and we need a pg in the worst way. why not go for both?
You just can't trade our pick under any circumstances.
Check it out though... Melo could want to be traded to Washington. Close to his Baltimore roots. You never know

It would be a lottery pick PLUS a maximum capspace slot (Porter is getting $20M a year easy).
The Knicks likely use the capspace on another stater or (gulp) possibly keep Rose.
Then draft someone with their pick who can be a longterm investment.
Porter has worked a great deal on his shot, but if this draft is a good as some are saying,there is no way I give up the pick for Porter, who has shown himself to be better suited to be a complementary player.
I'm hoping for an alpha player in this draft, either a future replacement for Anthony, or a playmaker who can defend on the perimeter.

Trading away picks for has beens has crippled the franchise. Porter will be 24 next season. Has a TS above 60% and a WS of 180. this season. Not to mention he is a good defender. These are star level advanced stats. He only has a usage of 15% which may be why he only averages 14pts per game. And again he is only 24 and still has a lot of potential.

I don't foresee us being able to actually use our cap space for anyone of real quality for a couple of years. We can't offer the most money, and we aren't a contender.
IMO Porter is already a good player with potential to be more if given more responsiblity. And has the same potential but less bust potential then the players available from 7-10.

Judging by what happened last offseason-, teams will match max contracts whether they want to keep them or not, with the idea being they'll trade them the following offseason to teams that were interested.
If we pick less than 5 or if Fox Tatum Jackson Ball Fultz are gone-- while I would not trade for Otto porter -- I'd keep my options open. I'd consider moving 7and 44 to Portland for 12-20-27 and take Collins Brooks Ojeyele. Three big under rated athletic players at 4-3-2

I think the last 3 games hes shown much more game. Hes great defensively and with his speed it can help the KNicks. Hes a top 5 pick no question. Washington has stated that they intend to keep him. I like Otto and I think he would blend in well withe triangle. He's smart and he has keen sense of his offensive strengths. And he decent on defense. Two things: He's not a good shot creator, something to keep in mind when you consider who his point guard is. Also, he's not really a guard, so the roster would really need to be sorted for him to fit.

He has shown the same thing all year. His defense, playmaking, and ability to get to the basket at will has been on display all season. The difference has been he is making a few shots, which i told you in the draft thread he is a better shooter than his numbers show. His form is sound and he makes his free throws, which are 2 indicators that it's more about confidence than anything. You were convinced we could not pick a PG that isn't a good 3pt shooter. I really think you should spent time forming your opinions and stick to them, instead of flip flopping every day. I will continue to stick by the fact that Fox would be a great pick, although right now i would still select Ntilikina over him. Ntilikina has more size, shooting, and is the best defensive guard in the draft. I believe he would be in the top 5 mix if he were playing in college. But you can't go wrong with either player.
