Knicks · Is D-Rose Best As A Shooting Guard? (page 1)

colorfl1 @ 4/5/2017 7:30 PM
This question has been on my mind for most of this ugly season.
Rose is a very effective penetrating scorer -- what is frustrating about his style of play is that his teammates are most often left standing around watching him -- because he rarely orchestrates selflessly with the rock.

Acknowledging all his defensive limitations and health issues -- its undeniable that he is a very strong competitor and a clutch performer.

That got me thinking that he just a shooting guard in a point guard's body.

Thinking outside the box
(Even if Mello gets traded) Wouldn't the Knicks be best served signing him to a moderately priced 3 year deal as a near all-star starting shooting guard?

nixluva @ 4/5/2017 8:23 PM
I think the Knicks test drove this idea with Baker on the floor with Rose. I think it actually worked well for the most part but long term BOTH would have to make MASSIVE improvement in taking and making 3 point shots!!!

D-Rose best on another team

LOL. I started to post a similar comment but thought it better to explain how I think it could work.
I'm down on Rose but I do think he had good moments when paired with Baker who is a strong defensive guard that can cover both PG's and SG's.

blkexec @ 4/5/2017 8:46 PM
Rose is not a PG

Rose is not a SG

Rose is a slasher in a PG body

His PG body isn't built to withstand a slasher type style for 82 games.

But as a 6 man off the bench, in limited minutes....yes

arkrud @ 4/5/2017 10:34 PM
He cannot shoot and cannot guard.
So he is slashing defenslessman.

Ever hear the saying, you can't turn a ho into a housewife?

Every work with a guy or go to school with a guy who married a total slut? The red flags are all there. She's a whore. She's not going to be civilized. She's going to end up on her knees and guzzle down the mailman because that's in her base nature.

This is a CONTRACT YEAR, and Rose shows how little he cares, he even went MIA for a game. He's not suddenly going to start playing defense or put in the hard work to get an effective three point shot. He's got off the court issues as well, and an injury history.

Resigning Derrick Rose would be the Knicks as a guy who decided to ignore past history and the gigantic red flags and decided to put an apron on a slut.

You know why guys don't want to marry sluts? Because why invest and buy into something that everyone else GOT FOR FREE?

You can get a guy who is a net negative player who doesn't care about team ball for literally FREE out there, why spend a huge cap hit for a guy where the glaring red flags are evident? The Knicks could literally find Corey Maggette somewhere, sign him to the vet minimum and let him shotjack to his hearts content. They don't need to blow a team killing/cap killing contract to get that kind of selfish play.

Learn the lesson of the Bulls. They waited a LONG TIME to get him off their roster. No way it would be sensible for the Knicks to voluntarily jump into that same situation.

Yeah. A Pg who can't pass that well and a shooting guard who can't shoot. This is a really bad combo for Rose. He is best served healing up and then hopefully playing for another team as a back-up.

Except for the fact that he doesn't have a good shot from range, It's an ugly line drive with poor angle toward the rim. How can he be a shooting guard and not really good at shooting? And he is a massive liability on D.

Don't fit him for an apron. Just give him one as a parting gift on his way to a new team.

Yeah that sums up the problem. `Maybe he can play center!

franco12 @ 4/6/2017 12:20 PM
if he signs a vet min deal and goes to a contender - Clippers to replace Crawford & Rivers who get traded for Melo (wishful thinking)- then he will look awesome coming off the bench in a limited role where his skills can be exploited and his weaknesses minimized.

I don't see anyone giving him a deal longer than 1 year unless year 2 is a team option.

And I seriously doubt he is getting more than vet minimum.

Before he got hurt, I would have been open to keeping him here if we were able to move Melo - but thank god we dodged that bullet.

Kemet @ 4/6/2017 12:55 PM
Rose = Marbury = a slashing scoring-guard that average 26 minute per game in a 82 game season.
Several playoff teams will be interested in D.Rose scoring abilities in the offseason .. Cavs Bucks Raptors Clippers Nuggets Blazers Grizz .. Teams will offer D.Rose a short 2 or 3 yr contract for $10M per

Wade can't really shoot from range and he's a HOFer. I agree though, the bigger issue is the defense. You can't hide Rose anywhere on the court and he doesn't really draw enough fouls to compensate for his lack of range.

Well, Rose was once better than Marbury ever was. But the Knicks Rose is worse than Knicks Marbury was. Marbury was quite flawed but at least he could pass the ball and hit an OK percentage from 3 point range.
JesseDark @ 4/6/2017 3:12 PM
D Rose and shooting guard should never be used in the same sentence.

So you are saying that Rose is the town bicycle

I agree. I think that Rose is not the type of player you can add to a team with championship aspirations. You can win with Rose but he won't take you to the promised land.

Problem is a shooting guard should be able to shoot. A PG should be able to dish and see the floor. Things he can't do. However, he is a great penetrator and fast as heck. But how do you use him? Sixth man? Tough to see where he would fit. Its too bad because he has incredible natural talent.

The only way to use him is like Vinny Johnson. Have him come off the bench and only worry about scoring in bunches.

Probably true. How does a team get him to believe it?
