Knicks · Melo's ego & the NTC (page 1)

Could Melo's ego get him to drop his NTC so he is traded somewhere that a) wants him/values him and b) is willing to give NY significant assets which reflect on Melo's value (and sense of worth?)

The Knicks don't want Melo.
CLE is going for Butler - they don't want Melo.
BOS obviously doesn't want Melo.
With chatter of CP going elsewhere, not sure the Clips want Melo.

Haven't heard of any other teams willing to trade draft assets and/or promising youth for a 33yr-old, declining player on an over-valued contract. Surprise surprise.

So - to save face, does Melo drop his NTC? I think he just might. That or he forces Phil to plain out cut him, which would be an ignominious end to his NY tenure. Does Melo want that?

Melo has an untradeable contract that PHil gave him. Melo is 33 and could be owed 60 mil for two years because the trade kicker Phil gave him. Butler will make 35 mil over the next two years and is younger and better. Not hard to figure out you don't give players heading towards the twilight of their career a ntc, trade kicker and a near max deal especially if you might decide you want to trade that player later.

Fair point, but the question is not 'should Phil have given Melo a NTC', but rather, 'does Melo drop his NTC' if the narrative becomes 'no one wants Melo'.

I think he would rather stay in ny. He does have the player option next year so he could go somewhere for a year and then look to team up with LeBron. That would mean he is opting out from 27 mil at 34. I dont know if he would do that Also, even if he drops it he has a trade kicker that I don't think he would waive(some scenarios require him to take it).

I don't know if it's up to Melo. I could see Phil just cutting him if he felt the team would be better served without him. Phil will be (rightly) raked over the coals for this, but if the team succeeds this year without Melo, then it'll be a blip on the road to the full and lasting rebuild this team needs.

I think melo will be a knick this coming season. You might want to make peace with that.

Two non-answers. Thank you for playing.

I think this might happen. I don't think Melo does Phil any favors after the press conference. Melo would get his money and get to go to where he wanted. There might still be a chance of a buyout but the presser was pretty rough.
knicks1248 @ 6/19/2017 7:42 PM
It's not that no one want melo, it's the contract and on any contender, you can't add melo, and get rid of all your prime role players, that's 2 steps forward, 2 steps back.

I think phil is playing mind games with melo, he knows that contract is almost impossible to trade.

If melo was in the final yr of his contract, every single contender would want him...

Don't be shocked if Melo didn't get traded to Portland it's a good place for him and the Nike headquarters is there. He becomes part of a big three there and it's a promising situation that will enhance his play and continue towards his scoring ranks.

its good for Portland and the Knicks, they get Melo for overpriced guards we get some decent players and picks

TLover @ 6/19/2017 11:24 PM
Portland would be a great fit for Melo.. as would Minnesota
fwk00 @ 6/20/2017 12:01 AM
If Melo gets traded it will have to be to a team that either believes it has a shot at winning or at the least still wants to be competitive.

I can't help but believe Orlando, Portland, Memphis, Toronto, Dallas, NO, and Miami are the last teams standing with Miami, Orlando, Dallas, and Portland Likely being most desirable by Melo standards.

Paris907 @ 6/20/2017 7:35 AM
Melo ain't enhancing his brand or nurturing his family issues in Portland or Minny. He's a LA Ny guy.

Papabear Says

Why don't you just stop it" This ain't about Melo. Melo came to play ball every game. Now you may not like his game. This is about Phil Jackson's ego. Watch" Ain't no star's coming here because of the way he treated Melo. Look a lot of these draft picks especially the potential stars will not like being second fiddle to Jackson like Jackson is the star and not them. Until Jackson is gone the Knicks will hardly get to the playoffs. (only if they buy a ticket)

Phil has made plenty of errors I totally agree. But I seriously doubt stars were coming here to play with melo anyway.

Chris Paul just might have came. Phil blew that.

At this point Chris Paul wouldn't have done much good to be honest. Back in 2012 it might have been a different story. Secondly I have a hard time buying that story actually. Despite being friends with melo he still had a better situation in LA

I've come to the conclusion that melo is here to stay ... unless there is a buy out, melo isn't going anywhere he wants to win in ny and I admire him for it. But I will say with his age the only way we win with melo is with him off the bench as a sixth man

I don't think it has to do with wanting to win in new York. I think it has to do with family issues(which I can understand) and also because he wants to stick it to phil. Lets be honest if Melo really wanted to win he would have been out of here 3 years back
