Knicks · Cuban and Mavs Laughing Their A**ES Off... (page 3)

The knicks were always linked to Frank and never showed real interest in Smith JR. Phil wanted a triangle guard and that's what he got a potential combo gut that has to put in a lot of work in as a shooter and ball handler.
Smith Jr would probably had been the 1st or second pick had not it been for a knee injury. The guy is athletic but crafty and smart. It will be terrible seeing him ball out but hopefully Frank has a good career.

HofstraBBall wrote:To me, he is a longer version of Grant. Something I always saw in Grant was his jittery demeanor as a point guard. Never polished. This kid looks as he will have the same issues with his outside shooting and dealing with the NY/NBA pressure. Think Smith will prove to be one of the better players in this years draft. Even Monk is an NBA ready prospect and will help any team with his outside shooting. I hope I am wrong but seems like a stretch of a pick. Was afraid of the Triangle pick. A type of pick we could have made with our 44 pick. Hope he proves me wrong.
Two major differences between Grant and Ntilikina.
Grant never could shoot 3's - Nti is already a better shooter by alot. This will make him tougher to defend and more of an asset. Nti is 18 - 4 years younger than Grant and has lots of improvements he can still make.
Finally defensive potential. Not even close. Ntilikina may have the most defensive potential in the entire draft. Role player on offense, but on defense he has the highest ceiling in the draft.

The NBA draft is a ton of fun and it's natural to look like and dislike players you seen in college, but the irony of it is any NBA fan's bonafides isn't how well you think you can evaluate college freshmen in comparison to one another but how much you understand the draft is a mostly a crap shoot. None of us have any idea how it'll turn out.
Who here can claim to have known a year of the arguably top 4 NBA rookies this last year, none of them would be drafted in the 2016 1st round?

Flashback to 2015.....the "people" wanted .....Winslow...ok4....Mudiay....etc...name another player in the top 15 of that draft that touches KP and KAT status....just in the top 5...one got traded in a salary dump, 2 nailed the bench OK4 and Herzonja...
We do not know what Frank can be....but Gaines and Phil have been on this kid...just like KP...let's wait and see
dacash@ 6/22/2017 11:06 PM
wow three pages, the only players ppl loved the knicks picking were cleanthony early, jerian grant etc guys that really should be much much better given the fact that they stayed in college 4 years. nobody, i mean NOBODY , on this site can honestly say they watched games in which this guy played.but we all read that that the knicks euro scout Kevin Wilson did, thought enough of him top have mills and gaines come down to watch him personally. and they liked what they saw. from before the draft heated up ,im talking months ago phil was said to have liked him, we all knew it was going top happen there are threads about it lots of threads.now that it has happen the knicks were fooled into doing exactly what everyone knew they were going to do. really. all u arm chair scouts just like porzingus did he may surprise u,but god in heaven let him play a damn game.

Gotta love how Dallas wants us to believe Smith was the guy all along. Meanwhile, they are sitting there with Frank's coach on their payroll and their thumbs up their asses. Think about that for a minute. They wanted this guy bad. And at the end of the day, they couldn't get that pick from Minn with Jimmy Butler in the mix.

Very true. History proves its wise to go against the flow here. I usually do for a multitude of reasons

Yup...said something similar in a KP trade thread.
The KP draft was supposed to be a great draft too, and while there are a number of very good players in it who were not taken in the top 10, and it is still too early to evaluate some players fully, there are a number of players in that draft who were taken early based on what we've seen so far.
Have to trust what our scouts saw in Ntilikina, and he is hardly an unknown talent like some would make him out to be.

Rick Carlisle leaves no doubt Mavs wanted Dennis Smith over Frank Ntilikina, saying there was "uproarious" applause when Knicks made pick.
Interest in Nitty was all a ruse by Cuban and the Mavs for Phil to draft him, so they can take Smith, whom they wanted all along. Phil fell for it...hook, line and sinker.
Dallas was all in for Frank. The Mavs scouted him for over a year, the owner and pres flew to France last week to watch him play and meet with him, and they hired his coach to be on the coaching staff. That is a lot of time, money and energy invested in a player they didn't get. Smith might end up being the better pro but he wasn't rated over Frank on the Mavs draft board.
fitzfarm@ 6/23/2017 2:34 AM
Just wait till frank dominantates DSJ on both ends I don't understand where frank got a bad shooting rep because he shot 43% from three, he's a dead eye, a proven winner in a pro league .. dead eye and proven winner are two things djs resume is missing . On top of his awful defense and how he disappeared in big games and struggled to make his teammates better.. oh and nitty is a lockdown defender, who is huge and still growing
Not only did we draft the best player available at 8... we got the steal of the draft

I can't imagine how confusing and chaotic the world must be for someone who genuinely believes the Knicks selected a draft based on who they thought the next team wanted.
followed by cranky empty whiney posts in every thread now. Good stuff.
Dennis Smith has Steve Francis written all over him with a balky knee and attitude issues which may or may not translate into a winning player. Smith is a good prospect. I would have been fine if they took Smith. They had their reasons for passing, as did 7 other teams. The same scouting staff that picked KP and Willy took Ntilikina but these guys will spazz about spout over "CLEARLY" passing on a better talent. Funny.
One player had good #s on a losing NCAA team. The other flew in late and had to pass on workouts because his team was in the finals and despite nothing being more important to Frank's future than the draft he didnt want to miss any time with the team or see the series end early. Dude's a winner. Who is a better NBA will show over time. Maybe its Smith. Maybe its Frank. The drama is just that.

also even if true, it's more stupid of them to let it go public. What good comes from that. If Frank ends up a player and DSJ a dud they'll look foolish. Why wouldn't they wait until DSJ shines before going public with how "smart" they were
DSJ was also highly rumored to Orlando at 6; how did they fake those guys out?
Welpee@ 6/23/2017 10:23 AM
I'm more worried about Ntilikina vs Monk than Ntilikina vs Smith.
I don't think Smith will get to Steve Francis's level. Francis had a brief run as one of the best guards in the league. I see Smith as a more athletic version of OJ Mayo. He may put up decent numbers but he may also end up playing for five or six teams during the course of his career.

i think the bolded is a great point, fish. there are a bunch of red-flags with dennis smith, one of them being MOTOR, which is not something i want to bring into this franchise. frankN has just spent his time playing in championship basketball and flying overseas just to show up for the team that drafted him. smith may turn out to be a nice player, but i'm ok with frankN based on his perceived character, as well as the history of reese gaines.
Vmart@ 6/23/2017 11:41 AM
Ntlikina, Smith and Monk will all be good players. I wish all of them success in the NBA. Ntlikina just brings more to the game that the Knicks need. The Knicks need was Size, defense and versatility. Ntlikina can probably play three positions easily. I like the pick I see length with skills and vision. He has a very good first step and you can see he has good explosion once he gets by his man.
Nalod@ 6/23/2017 12:09 PM
Low spectrum is Collison, high end for Frank is Michael Ray Richardson Kid is 18. Might still grow a bit. French "A" league would destroy any NCAA team, even national champ UNC. A role player who is performing well against men. A player we put a lot of time scouting. Passed the Gaines test. Again, Dallas saying nice things about their kid and thats all good. Smith might be the best of the bunch, but we just don't know.
