Knicks · Any trade involving Melo to Rockets needs to include Capela (page 1)
Heck we can have Willy & Ryan Anderson backing up Clint & KP.. not bad at all.
Trading off Capela when they basically have no other rim protection on the roster, on a pretty much capped out roster to boot, is not conducive to going for it.
There's no point in the Rockets going one step forward, then taking two steps back.
The Rockets can always look for other deals or wait to see if Melo gets bought out eventually. ( While that might not seem likely now, it still would be a better option than gutting their team of it's only true full time rim protector, and no Nene does not count here)
Nor are the Knicks getting an unprotected 1st rounder in any deal for Melo.
For the 10,000th time. If the Knicks ( or some other teams in a multiple team trade) are not willing to take Ryan Anderson, some non guaranteed contracts and a few protected/low picks, then it's no deal at all.
The Rockets can go on and function without Melo on their roster.
The Knicks cannot go on and function with Melo on their roster.
The PERSON WHO IS WILLING TO WALK AWAY FIRST IS THE PERSON WITH THE POWER IN ANY RELATIONSHIP DYNAMIC. If the Knicks don't want Anderson, then no dice, Rockets and Morey will walk from the trade table. The Knicks have far less incentive to walk from the table.

Why can't they?
I'd send them back Kyle O'quinn with Melo. Although Capela is due a pay raise, he's still a young asset that you can even flip at the trade deadline.
There's still the Melo for K.Love possibility but if Cavs think they're losing Lebron after the season then they may keep Love bc he's under contract and build team around he & Kyrie.
If trailblazers are in play, it would give the Knicks more leverage.
Worst case scenero is continue holding on to Melo up to training camp and you'll see his people telling teams to trade whomever to get him out of NY or we just hold on to him and expect him to be a professional in the last year of his contract.
If they want us to take on Anderson, we should make it a stipulation that we get Capela as well.
Capela is a player that fits our young core and complements both KP and Willy well.
We could easily utilize a 3 man C/PF rotation of Capela/KP/Willy.
We see what's the best we can get from a third team for Anderson. Whatever it is, we take it since Anderson does not fit positionally or young core wise with us.

No capella throws the Rockets out of balance. Rockets Defense was pretty good last year and its that very thing that starts any offensive attack. If IM rockets, I keep anderson and Capela than do a melo deal. KO'Q does not go starter minutes and protect the rim. He just doesn't.
Nalod would love to be wrong and we get Capela. Unless Morey can somehow find a not the equality starting 5, Im not seeing that no matter how much I want to see a trade done.

Yeah it's not important enough for us to get Capela that we should ask the Rockets to make this sacrifice. I'd rather ask for other sweeteners instead.

I agree. I think Melo would be a huge get for Houston. Melo is still one of the top catch and shoot players in the game and that is without point guards that pass the ball. Harden and Paul are tremendous upgrades in terms of passing. Houston needs to do something to make the deal worthwhile for the Knickd. Capella and/or Gordon need to be included to get the deal done.
Melo's lack of defense and ball movement could actually make them worse. So Houston can afford to be careful with a Melo trade. Think the Super Lakers fit with Dwight and Nash.
Sinix wrote:Melo doesn't improve the Rockets much. The ball needs to be in Harden/CP3s hands and Melo isn't a catch and shoot player. Melo is an elite catch and shoot player. Stats and the eye test back that up. Harden/Paul is a huge upgrade over Jose/Rose.
but that won't happen so there is no chance we're getting Capela

Yeah I actually made an argument. I get the feel all you do is plug Melo's PPG into houstons stats.
In 2017 Melo had the 3rd most iso plays per game in the NBA despite not being very efficient. This is something his coaches have gotten on him about that he is not going to change as he will turn 34 years old this upcoming season.
Sinix wrote:75% of Melo's 3s are assisted. 1/3 of his 2s are assisted. A HUGE part of Melo's offense is catch and shoot, and probably his best. The bold above and suggesting that playing Harden/CP3 doesnt make Melo better is clear evidence you have no clue what your talking about. Not that we really needed it.. but feel free to take a look at Melo's Olympics. He's played 80+ games for team USA. Thats a whole NBA season worth of data where we see that Melo is one of the best catch and shoot players. Like ever.fishmike wrote:Sinix wrote:Melo doesn't improve the Rockets much. Yet he has no interest in playing a catch and shoot game.
What do you think Mike D, Karl and Phil had problems with Melo about. I'll save the mystery because we have a direct quote:
"He can play that role that Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant played," Jackson said. "That's a perfect spot for him, to be in that isolated position on the weak side. Because it's an overload offense and there's a weak-side man that always has an advantage if the ball is swung.
"Carmelo, a lot of times, wants to hold the ball longer than -- we have a rule, if you hold a pass two seconds, you benefit the defense. So he has a little bit of a tendency to hold the ball for three, four, five seconds, then everybody comes to a stop. That is one of the things we work with. But he has adjusted to it, he knows what it can do and he's willing to see its success."
This isn't the Olympics where the talent discrepancy is gigantic. It's a different game.

I would take on R.Anderson and his contract easily if we could get Capela and a 1st round pick with him but Capela means too much to Houston for them to include him in the trade IMO.

Yeah Melo is a great catch and shoot player. If he got rid of those mid-range iso shots and did much more catch and shoot, he'd help his teams much more. He did that in the Olympics and I see no reason why he wouldn't in Houston. Their big 3 would be talented enough that it would work if they all want it to and are willing to make sacrifices. I still think GSW and SAS would be favored over Houston but it at least gives Houston a shot.

How many minutes is Capela going to play here? He'll take most of Willy's minutes? Does Noah become a $70 mil backup backup center? Or is he the backup center and Willy gets DNPs? And we haven't even gotten to KOQ. It just doesn't make sense.
