Let's be real here, Willy is no defensive juggernaut and Enes has a polished offensive NBA game.
KOQ is likely to be traded for purposes of discussion, what might the effect going forward to trade Willy should Enes be a better fit with KP?
The true need at this time is an athletic 3 but one with potential star power. This is not obtained via trade, its thru the draft.
And, other needs are not apparent because we need to see who can do what, and give the objective "grow our own" time to actually happen.
We as fans see a need and offer our suggestions on how to plug it up. Fact is the process of players committing to getting better, we actually giving them room to grow is and creating an environment to do that is what this team is about. That what the melo trade was about.
We cut back mature limbs on a tree to allow younger trees and limbs to grow.
we need to see what Noah brings and if he can return to form he can be a major force for a competing team. Noah will get minutes and an opportunity to play. Willy is a bonafide prospect. This is not something that needs to be addressed right away but will be interesting to follow.
There is some logic to it. When you have a lot of redundancy, trade the guy with the most trade value perhaps. But we'd have to get something very good for him.

Yeah unless we are getting a really good return for him I wouldn't trade him.
It would have to be for a really really good young 3.
I don't know if that player is available. But if he were, you would have to consider it.
At the same time, I hate trading a player a year into their career. There's still for Willy to improve and show what he can do. He may not improve. We will have to see. I'd like to get another look at him this season.
One thing's for sure, Briggs will have a field day this season with the trade (either Willy, KP or Kanter) for a wing or guard proposal. He will be doing it after virtually every game. We all need to brace ourselves.
Why trade Willy when we can probably get a really good deal for Kanter?
And Willy is still cheap. I don't see Kanter opting in, and I don't see how we can retain him and lock up that money for 4 front court players - Noah, KP & Willy when they get paid & Kanter.
Kanter logically gets traded.

Yeah you could play him a lot of min to try to inflate his value and see what you can get in a trade.
I wouldn’t do it. He’s cheaper than Kanter and seems to possibly have a higher ceiling. He could even become a better defender. That’s yet to be seen. Then again.... it always depends on who you are landing and for whom.

All good questions. And all good points. I'm not advocating either way. Obvious we could not move Kanter right away and I don't know his trade value.
My preference is Trade Noah and KOQ. Develop WIlly and the see what we got. The questoins get sorted out on the court in time..
Only if it lands a young 3. I dont see anyone trading for Kanter at that salary. Maybe if we took back a bad contract like Meyers Leonard maybe we could get Harkless for Kanter.
It's not smart to trade Willy. We are still trying to repair the relationship with KP, and build around him. You don't trade his best friend. Building a team isn't all about fit and redundancy, it's about chemistry as well. We want guys who are friends and want to play together. The rest of the stuff will fall into place.
It is still too early to trade Willy. The team really needs to evaluate if Kanter truly is better now and in the near future going to be better that Willy. If they conclude he is, they can trade Willy and probably get a high draft pick or solid prospect. If they conclude that kanter is not markedly better, then they can trade kanter or let him walk. It will probably take a few months before the coaches can make this determination.
this is beyond dumb. you don't trade a young marc gasol, because after only one year "he doesn't fit with kp." you keep guys like wily and you build around them, not trade them. stick to the fake phone conversations between people nalod.
This is typical Knicks stupidity.
Willy was a second pick and finished on the all rookie first team. He's got a tremendous post game, is an elite rebounder and a great passer. Let's trade the guy to open up time for stiff that couldn't put up big numbers with a top 2 point guard who pulls all the attention to him.
I mean Jesus. Look at this kids numbers when he plays 30 minutes.
Kanter at 16MM next season or Willy at 3MM.
This team needs to maximize it's return for Kanter, Thomas and Lee and start to rebuild. No more half ass attempts. 16 years of shit basketball without a plan can not continue.
There is an untouchable list for me and Willy is in it. KP, Willy and Frank. That is my core that I build around.
Kanter is due a raise and will probably opt out to get a long term contract under this market. Willy is locked in at one of the best contracts in the NBA over the next 3 yrs.
Willy also has more potential all around game. Better passer, may be a better rebounder at 13.6 per 36 at 22. And a stl and a blk per game per 36.
To be clear, I would rather trade kanter than Willy. Kanter would have to show that he has vastly improved his defense. Right now, I think Willy can be just as good as Kanter offensively and he is better defensively plus he has a good contract for us. The way you trade Willy is if Kanter blows us away with his improvement and the knicks and the knicks try to maximize their assets by getting a lotto pick or solid young prospect. But in any case, I am in no rush to trade anyone other than maybe Lee, who does not fit the youth movement.

Its not dumb, its a conversation. I advocated neither.
Its something we will watch and it makes the team interesting.
With Noah, who if healthy will play, then we have 4 big dudes.
Kanter is only 24, so its not like he is NOT young. And it depends on what you get in return.
I like Willy. Its possible that Noah plays well and Enes steps up. If Willy is the man out, KP would rather his friend land in a good situation where he can play and make money then just be KP's friend. If Enes is a better fit, KP is an allstar.
NYK4Ever, don't be naïve, this team is in a fluid situation and as I said, it all gets sorted out on the court!!!
In the end KP really needs an athletic type to protect the rim. Im wondering if a guy like Drummond is that type.
How you get him? I don't know. Might not be that guy either, maybe we draft that sort. My take is we have three offensive minded finesse players all a bit weak on the defensive end. We love Willy, and prefer to also trade Enes or Noah. Is Noah done?
NYK4ever: Nalod, just got off the phone with Scott Perry, he said I can lead the trades!
Nalod: That's great, that's super fun!
NYK4ever: Yeah, I saw your post. Your an idiot!!
Nalod: Ok, Oh, I hear your other phone ringing.
NYK4ever: Its Stan Van gundy!
Nalod: You gonna pick it up or argue with me?
NYK4ever: He wants to trade Drummond and Stanley Johnson for Willy and Cuz, and a Beas.
Nalod: Wow! what do you think!

Nalod: Now that there not just a trade of willy concept, you actually have a name to ponder. Not so easy to call it dumb. DO your job man, do your job...
NYK4ever: I'd rather trade Enes.
Nalod: Did you counter that?
NYK4ever: No, I just responded to you.
Nalod: Might want to counter. THis is real. What about Johnson? His upside at his age?
NYK4ever: That's a good idea, They rejected Enes, they like Willy's contract better.
Nalod: I get it, but you have a trio of Enes, Drummond and KP, in fact, you can play KP at the 3 at times and go super big.
NYK4ever: I don't like it.
Nalod: That's your opinion, then don't do the trade.
NYK4ever: But, im accountable for my decisions now im in charge, I don't want to be "That guy". Don't want to be a "Tapscott"!!!
Nalod: Better to just throw out statements on the internet and not be accountable?
NYK4ever: I want to go home.

Why did it take 9 posts before somebody brought up the obvious?
Yeah...great idea. You have issues with your future franchise player at the end of last year, trade away Melo, who KP wanted to stay, and then trade away his best friend.
I know the NBA is a "business," and I expect that KP understands this, but he will throw this back in the face of the Knicks when he decides to become a FA and go to another franchise.
Willy is a perfect complimentary player- rebounds, does dirty work, can score in the post, can pass out of the post...and I expect he will be able to be even more than this in a few years.
At this point, I see him as a foundational player for a young and growing team...crazy idea to trade him away for this reason...more so because of the KP relationship.

there you go. something you're better at.
Yeah right, trade Willy and alienate KP further. Make Rambis a head coach for cryin out loud.
